Treated Olive Cake as a Non-forage Fiber Source for Growing Awassi Lambs: Effects on Nutrient Intake, Rumen and Urine pH, Performance, and Carcass Yield

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of partial replacement of wheat hay with sun-dried (SOC) or acid-treated SOC (ASOC) olive cake on nutrient intake and performance of Awassi lambs. An additional objective was to study the effects of acid treatment of olive cake (OC) on its chemical composition and nutritive value. On DM basis, sun-drying of OC did not dramatically affect its chemical composition. On the other hand, treating SOC with phosphoric acid decreased (p<0.05) SOC contents of neutral detergent fiber. Twenty seven male lambs ($17.6{\pm}0.75$ kg body weight) individually housed in shaded pens were randomly assigned to one of three dietary treatments (9 lambs/treatment). Dietary treatments were formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenous by replacing 50% of wheat hay in the control diet (CTL) with SOC or ASOC and to meet all nutrient requirements. Dietary treatments had no effects on nutrient intake or digestibility except for ether extract. Lambs fed the SOC diet had (p = 0.05) faster growth rate, greater final body weight, and greater total body weight gain in comparison with the CTL diet, but not different from the ASOC diet. Additionally, lambs fed the SOC diet had greater (p = 0.03) hot and cold carcass weights than the ASOC diet, but not different from the CTL diet. However, feed conversion ratios and dressing percentages were similar among dietary treatments. In conclusion, replacing half of dietary wheat hay with SOC improved performance of Awassi lambs with no detrimental effects on nutrients intake or digestibility. No further improvements in the nutritive value of SOC and lambs performance were detected when SOC was treated with acid.

Fermentation quality and in vitro methane production of sorghum silage prepared with cellulase and lactic acid bacteria

  • Objective: The effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and cellulase enzyme on fermentation quality, microorganism population, chemical composition and in vitro gas production of sorghum silages were studied. Methods: Commercial inoculant Lactobacillus plantarum Chikuso 1 (CH), local selected strain Lactobacillus casei (L. casei) TH 14 and Acremonium cellulase (AC) were used as additives in sorghum silage preparation. Results: Prior to ensiling Sorghum contained $10^4LAB$ and $10^6cfu/g$ fresh matter coliform bacteria. The chemical compositions of sorghum was 26.6% dry matter (DM), 5.2% crude protein (CP), and 69.7% DM for neutral detergent fiber. At 30 days of fermentation after ensiling, the LAB counts increased to a dominant population; the coliform bacteria and molds decreased to below detectable level. All sorghum silages were good quality with a low pH (<3.5) and high lactic acid content (>66.9 g/kg DM). When silage was inoculated with TH14, the pH value was significantly (p<0.05) lower and the CP content significantly (p<0.05) higher compared to control, CH and AC-treatments. The ratio of in vitro methane production to total gas production and DM in TH 14 and TH 14+AC treatments were significantly (p<0.05) reduced compared with other treatments while in vitro dry matter digestibility and gas production did not differ among treatments. Conclusion: The results confirmed that L. casei TH14 could improve sorghum silage fermentation, inhibit protein degradation and decrease methane production.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of beet plup and IRG (Italian ryegrass) dry powder in fattening pig diet on reducing concentration of odorous compounds in the pig slurry. Fifty fattening boars [(Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc] were randomly assigned to one of 3 treatments (control, beet plup 5%, and IRG 5%). Pigs (BW 50~110 kg) were fed diets formulated to meet the Korean Feeding Standard (2012) and their excretion was collected from the slurry pits. Short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and branched chain fatty acid (BCFA) were higher in beet plup (31,786, 3,985 ppm) and IRG (32,755, 4,261 ppm) treatments, which was not different among treatments (p>0.05), compared to control (p<0.05). Concentrations of phenols and indoles were highest in beet plup (183.83, 168.59 ppm) and IRG (9.32, 8.92 ppm) treatments. Altogether, addition level of two contents was not appropriate to decrease concentration of odorous compounds.

유기산으로 처리한 냉장 광어의 미생물 평가 (Microbiological Evaluations of Refregerated Flatfish Treated with Organic Acids)

  • 본 연구는 4~1$0^{\circ}C$ 냉장조건에서 0.5% 초산(AA), 0.5% 유산 (LA) 및 0.5% 구연산(CA) 침지법으로 5분 동안 처리한 신선한 광어의 미생물학적 저장 안정성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 0.5% 초산 처리구는 4$^{\circ}C$, 12일 저장 동안 그람음성세균(GNC)이 증식을 완전히 억제하는데 효과적이었다. 0.5%의 유산 및 구연산 처리구는 각각 4$^{\circ}C$, 저장 9일부터 그람음성세균(GNC)의 급속한 증식을 보였다. 1$0^{\circ}C$에서 6일 저장 동안 0.5% 초산 처리구는 그람음성균의 증식억제에 효과적이었으며, 유산 및 구연상 처리구는 저장 3일 이후 효과가 없었다. 0.5%(v/v) 초산 처리구는 4$^{\circ}C$에서 저장 6일 동안 그리고 1$0^{\circ}C$에서 저장 3일 동안 호기성 부패 세균(APC)의 증식을 완전히 억제하였다. 0.5%(v/v) 초산 처리구는 4$^{\circ}C$에서 저장 12일 동안, 그리고 1$0^{\circ}C$에서 저장 6일 동안 미생물학적 저장 안정성을 유지하였다. 본 연구의 결과 4~1$0^{\circ}C$에서 광어포의 저장 도안 호기성 육부패의 주요 세균인 그람음성세균(GNC) 억제력이 초산 처리구의 광어포는 4$^{\circ}C$에서 12일 동안 미생물학적 저장 안정성을 유지하였다.

Effects of Combined Treatments of Lactic Acid Bacteria and Cell Wall Degrading Enzymes on Fermentation and Composition of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) Silage

  • This experiment was carried out to study the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculation and addition of cell wall degrading enzymes on the fermentation characteristics and chemical compositions of Italian ryegrass silage. An inoculant LAB with or without a cell wall degrading enzyme of Acremoniumcellulase (A), or Meicellulase (M) or a mixture of both (AM), was applied to 1 kg of fresh Italian ryegrass sample. The treatments were control untreated, LAB-treated (application rate $10^5$ cfu/g fresh sample), LAB+A 0.005%, LAB + A 0.01%, LAB+A 0.02%, LAB + M 0.005%, LAB + M 0.01%, LAB + M 0.02%, LAB+AM 0.005%, LAB + AM 0.01% and LAB+AM 0.02%. The sample was ensiled into 2-L vinyl bottle silo, with 9 silages of each treatment were made (a total of 99 silages). Three silages of each treatment were incubated at 20, 30 and $40{^{\circ}C}$ for an approximately 2-months storage period. All silages were well preserved as evidenced by their low pH values (3.79-4.20) and high lactic acid concentrations (7.71-11.34% DM). The fermentation quality and chemical composition of the control untreated and the LAB-treated silages were similar, except that for volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) content was lower (p < 0.05) in the LAB-treated silages. LAB + cellulase treatments improved the fermentation quality of silages by decreasing (p < 0.01) pH values and increasing (p<0.01) lactic acid concentrations, in all of cellulase types and incubation temperatures. Increasing amount of cellulase addition resulted in further decrease (p < 0.01) of pH value and increases (p < 0.01) of lactic acid and residual water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations. LAB + cellulase treatments reduced (p<0.01) NDF, ADF, hemicellulose and cellulose contents of silages compared with both the control untreated and LAB-treated silages. LAB + cellulase treatments did not affect the silage digestibility due to fact of in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was similar in all silages. The silages treated with cellulase A resulted in a better fermentation quality and a higher rate of cell wall reduction losses than those of the silages treated with cellulases M and AM. Incubation temperature of $30{^{\circ}C}$ seemed to be more suitable for the fermentation of Italian ryegrass silages than those of 20 and $40{^{\circ}C}$.

난각 칼슘 소재 처리에 의한 절단배추 단기 저장 효과 (Effects of egg shell calcium treatments on the short-term storage of cut Kimchi cabbage)

  • 폐기되고 있는 난각을 건조($80^{\circ}C$) 및 회화($1,000^{\circ}C$) 처리하여 칼슘 소재화하고 이의 농도(0.5, 1.0, 2.0%)를 달리하여 절단배추에 처리하여 polyethylene(PE) 지퍼백에 넣어 $5^{\circ}C$에서 6주 동안 저장하면서 선도유지 효과를 조사하였다. 난각 칼슘 소재의 칼슘 함량은 회화처리(ESP-2)가 건조처리(ESP-1)보다 2배 가량 높은 값(51.86%)을 나타내었다. 난각 칼슘 소재는 citric acid 수용액에서 높은 용해도를 나타내었으며, ESP-2가 ESP-1보다 용해도가 높았다. 절단배추의 이화학적 품질특성의 측정 결과, ESP-2 0.5% 처리구에서 중량감소율, 적정산도, 가용성 고형분 및 색차의 변화가 가장 적게 나타났다(p<0.05). 저장기간에 따른 관능평가 결과 각 처리구의 유의적인 차이는 나타나지 않았다(p<0.05). ESP-2 0.5% 처리는 절단배추의 단기 저장 시 선도유지에 효과적인 것으로 사료된다.

Effect of Lactic Acid Bacteria Treatment on Nutritive Value and In Vitro Ruminal Fermentation of Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) Silage

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculation to domestically-cultivated Italian ryegrass (IRG) on silage fermentation and in vitro ruminal fermentation. There were six treatments based on the LAB inoculants: 1) no addition of LAB (negative control: NC), additions of 2) commercially-available LAB (positive control: PC), 3) Lactobacillus plantarum (LPL), 4) L. paracasei (LPA), 5) L. acidophilus (LA), and 6) L. pentosus (LPT). All treatments were inoculated at a concentration of 106 CFU/g and ensiled for 3, 7, 21, and 42 days in triplicate and analyzed for nutritive values when ensiling was terminated. Day 42 silage from all treatments were also examined for in vitro ruminal fermentation. After 42 days, LAB-inoculated silages had higher (P<0.05) lactic acid concentration compared to the NC. In terms of nutritive values, the silages treated with LPA, LA, and LPT showed higher (P<0.05) crude protein and lower (P<0.05) neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber content compared to the rest of the treatment. In vitro ruminal dry matter degradability was not affected by LAB addition. However, LAB-treated IRG had shown higher (P<0.05) ammonia-N compared with that of the NC. LPA had shown the highest (P<0.05) volatile fatty acid concentration among the LAB examined. In conclusion, the addition of a single strain of LAB appeared to produce a quality IRG silage compared with the NC and the PC. Among the strains examined, LPA seemed to be superior to the others.

Impact of wilting and additives on fermentation quality and carbohydrate composition of mulberry silage

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of wilting and additives on the fermentation quality, structural and non-structural carbohydrate composition of mulberry silages. Methods: The selected lactic acid bacteria strains Lactobacillus plantarum 'LC279063' (L1), commercial inoculant Gaofuji (GF), and Trichoderma viride cellulase (CE) were used as additives for silage preparation. Silage treatments were designed as control (CK), L1, GF, or CE under three wilting rates, that is wilting for 0, 2, or 4 hours (h). After ensiling for 30 days, the silages were analyzed for the chemical and fermentation characteristics. Results: The results showed that wilting had superior effects on increasing the non-structural carbohydrate concentration and degrading the structural carbohydrate. After ensiling for 30 days, L1 generally had a higher fermentation quality than other treatments, indicated by the lower pH value, acetic acid, propionic acid and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) content, and the higher lactic acid, water soluble carbohydrate, glucose, galactose, sucrose, and cellobiose concentration (p<0.05) at any wilting rate. Wilting could increase the ratio of lactic acid/acetic acid and decrease the content of NH3-N. Conclusion: The results confirmed that wilting degraded the structural carbohydrate and increased the non-structural carbohydrate; and L1 exhibited better properties in improving fermentation quality and maintaining a high non-structural carbohydrates composition compared with the other treatments.

Changes in Quality Characteristics of Commercial Milk with Different Physical Treatments during Storage

  • In this study, the fatty acid content and quality characteristics of the massless enegy treated commercial milk products stored at $30^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The pH of pasteurized milk decreased significantly. UHT milk showed also significant decrease in pH to 4.70~5.72 on the 8th day of storage which was higher than control even there was no significant differences. The acidity of pasteurized milk decreased significantly from the 2nd day of storage to 0.13~0.65% in treatments and control and control was 0.94% at the 8th day of storage and 0.35% in the treatment of ultra high temperature milk. The solid content of pasteurized milk was $7.5^{\circ}Bx$ at 1 day after storage, which showed significant differences from the $11.2^{\circ}Bx$ in the treatment. Pasteurized milk showed more bacterial growth in the treatment than in the control. After 4 days of storage, there was no bacterial count in pasteurized milk but it increased significantly $1.9{\times}10^8$ and $4.5{\times}10^6$ each in UHT milk. Lactic acid bacteria were detected in the curd $2.0{\times}10^6$ in the control and $2.0{\times}10^8$ in the treatment at the 4th day. Palmitic acid content in the saturated fatty acid was the highest at 35.4~41.4% in both pasteurized and ultra high temperature milk. In the UHT milk, linolenic acid was significantly increased to 3.8% in the treatment compared with 2.9% in the control at the 4th day of storage. Therefore, commercial ultra high temperature milk with physical treatment to increase beneficial bacteria showed significant difference compared to the control after 5 days of storage in this experiment.

유기산 복합물 급여가 육계 생산성, 장기무게, 혈액내 면역적 성상 및 장내 융모 형태에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Dietary Organic Acid Mixture on Growth Performance, Organ Weight, Blood Immunological Parameter and Intestinal Villi Morphology in Broilers)

  • 본 연구는 유기산 복합제(lactic acid 12%, formic acid 9%, citric acid 5%, butyric acid 5% and phosphoric acid 6%) 급여가 육계의 생산성, 장기무게, 장내 융모 형태 및 혈액내 면역적 특성에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위해 시험을 실시하였다. 사양 시험은 2일령 Arbor Acre Broiler(male) 480수를 공시하였으며, 5주간 사양 시험을 실시하였다. 시험 설계는 1) CON(기초 사료), 2) OA1(기초 사료 + 유기산 복합제 0.1%) 및 3) OA2(기초 사료 + 유기산 복합제 0.2%)로 3개 처리를 하여 처리당 8반복, 반복당 20수씩 완전 임의 배치하였다. 전체 시험 기간동안 생산성은 처리구간 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 장기 무게에서는 근위 무게가 CON 처리구와 비교하여 OA2 처리구가 유의적으로 높게 나타내었다(Linear effect = 0.034). 하지만, 비장과 소장 무게에서는 처리구간 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 혈액내 면역적 성상에서는 처리구간 차이를 나타내지 않았다. 장의 융모에서는 CON 처리구와 비교하여 OA1 처리구가 유의적으로 높게 나타났다(Quadratic effect = 0.050). 결론적으로, 본 시험의 결과 육계에 0.2% 유기산 복합제를 급여시 근위의 중량을 증가시키고, 0.1% 급여 시는 소장 융모의 길이를 증가시키는 효과가 있었다.
