  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendations(SBAR) program and to test the effects of the program on communication clarity, clinical competence, and self-efficacy for clinical nurses in cancer hospitals. Methods: This study applied a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. There were 28 participants in the intervention group and 27 in the control group. SBAR program consisted of 4 parts and applied for 6 weeks in the intervention group. Data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and ANCOVA using the SPSS program. Results: Communication clarity, clinical competence and self efficacy were significantly increased in the intervention group compared to those in the control group. Conclusion: These results suggest that SBAR program may improve communication clarity, clinical competence and self-efficacy for clinical nurses in cancer hospitals. Therefore, it is required to actively take advantage of this program to improve communication clarity among medical staffs, clinical competence, and self-efficacy in clinical nursing practices.

  • Developmental language disorder is the most common developmental disability in childhood, occurring in 5-8% of preschool children. Children learn language in early childhood, and later they use language to learn. Children with language disorders are at increased risk for difficulties with reading and written language when they enter school. These problems often persist through adolescence or adulthood. Early intervention may prevent the more serious consequences of later academic problems, including learning disabilities. A child's performance in specific speech and language areas, such as phonological ability, vocabulary comprehension, and grammatical usage, is measured objectively using the most recently standardized, norm-referenced tests for a particular age group. Observation and qualitative analysis of a child's performance supplement objective test results are essential for making a diagnosis and devising a treatment plan. Emphasis on the team approach system in the evaluation of children with speech and language impairments has been increasing. Evidence-based therapeutic interventions with short-term, long-term, and functional outcome goals should be applied, because there are many examples of controversial practices that have not been validated in large, controlled trials. Following treatment intervention, periodic follow-up monitoring by a doctor is also important. In addition, a systematized national health policy for children with speech and language disorders should be provided.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of foot reflexology on ADL and fatigue in stroke patients. Method: The subjects were 31 stroke patients hospitalized in the Oriental Medicine Hospital of D University from June to November, 2002. Foot reflexology was applied to the experimental group twice a week for 6 weeks, 40 minutes each. For the data analysis, $x^2$-test was conducted to verify the homogeneity of general characteristics and clinical characteristics, and t-test was done to verify the homogeneity of ADL and fatigue. To examine the relative efficacy of the intervention, ANOVA and ANCOVA were conducted. Results: After foot reflexology, the subjects in the experimental group showed significant improvement in ADL. They also had less physical, psychological, and neurosensory fatigue, which are three areas of fatigue. Conclusion: The results suggest that foot reflexology is an effective intervention that helps the body work efficiently, eases stress and strain, and enhances the homeostasis of the body through stimulating the reflex zone of internal organs in the body. Therefore, it is necessary to develop foot reflexology as an unique nursing intervention.

  • Purpose: Due to the academic demands from a theory and practice-based educational program, nursing students often experience psychological burdens. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mindfulness meditation programs on nursing students' perceived stress, depression, and self-efficacy. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were recruited from two nursing colleges. The sample consisted of an intervention group (n=29) that participated in a mindfulness meditation program and a control group (n=30). The experimental group participated in the program for 120 minutes a week for a total of 8 sessions. The data were collected prior and after the intervention using self-administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $X^2$-test, Fisher's exact probability test, and the t-test. Results: After the application of the mindfulness meditation program, the experimental group showed a significant difference in perceived stress(t=-10.33, p<.001), depression (t=-2.17, p=.035), and self-efficacy (t=2.57, p=.013) scores. However, there was no significant differrence in the control group. Conclusion: These findings provide a supportive evidence of mindfulness meditation program as a behavioral intervention to reduce stress, depression and increase self-efficacy among nursing students.

Thirty four selected Q-statements from 32 participants were classified into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The collected data was analyzed using a QUANL PC program. Result: Three types of causal perception for research subjects were identified. Type I is negligence of causality; Type II is recognition of causality by preceding factors. Type III is recognition of causality by psychological stress. Conclusion: This study found that there are differences in perceiving causes of preterm labor. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a tailored nursing intervention depending on these types.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the correlation between anxiety and mastery in hospitalized young children's mothers. Methods: The subjects were 118 mothers of young children who were hospitalized in a pediatric unit. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure the variables of anxiety and mastery. In the data analysis, SPSSWIN 23.0 was used for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regression. Results: The reliability of instruments were found to have a Cronbach's alpha of .84 to .92. Anxiety correlated negatively with mastery (r=-.43, p<.001) and positively with duration of hospitalization (r=.26, p=.004). In multiple regression, mastery and duration of hospitalization were significant predictors of anxiety in hospitalized young children's mothers, explaining 24.0%. Conclusions: Anxiety and mastery were significant variables in hospitalized young children's mothers. A strategy of nursing intervention which decreases anxiety in mothers must be developed by increasing the level of mastery in mothers of hospitalized young children.
