Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine relationships between academic achievement, clinical competence, and confidence in the clinical performance of nursing students, and to identify factors that influence them. Methods: This was a descriptive correlation study. Data were collected from 118 nursing students at a nursing college in Seoul. One-way variance analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to examine relationships between academic achievement, clinical competence, and confidence in clinical performance. Results: Clinical competence was related to academic achievement in students' previous semester and to students' academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course. Clinical competence showed a weak positive correlation with academic achievement in students' previous semester and academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course in both evaluations by the professor and students' self-evaluations. However, confidence in clinical performance had no significant correlation with academic achievement. The factor affecting the clinical competence was academic scores in a fundamental of nursing course, and factors affecting confidence in clinical performance were health status, personality, major suitability, and class satisfaction in a fundamental of nursing skills course. Conclusion: These findings indicate that students with high academic achievement have better clinical performance, but confidence in clinical performance is not related to academic achievement.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of lifelong learners' learned helplessness and failure tolerance on academic achievement and job performance. The result of this empirical study exhibits that learned helplessness has negative effects on their academic achievement and job performance. Failure tolerance, however, has positive effects on their academic achievement and job performance. In addition, their academic achievement has mediated between learned helplessness and/or failure tolerance, and job performance. This study suggests that lifelong learners' positive response to failures is helpful for both learning and working performances.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether internal control, autonomous motivation of middle school students, and perceived parental pressure on academic performance affect academic procrastination, while verifying the moderating roles of autonomous motivation and parental pressure on academic performance. The participants were a total of 371 middle school students. Academic procrastination, internal control, autonomous motivation, and parental pressure on academic performance were measured using the Procrastination Inventory (Aitken, 1982) revised by Jeon and Park (2014), the Internal-External Control Scale (Ko, 2014), the Academic Self-Regulation Questionnaire (Ryan & Connell, 1989) revised by Kim (2002), and the Scale of Kang (2003), respectively. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and a Process Macro Model 2 (multiple additional modulation effect). The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, middle school students' internal control, autonomous motivation, and perceived parental pressure on academic performance directly affected the students's academic procrastination. Second, the moderating role of parental pressure on academic performance was significant. On the other hand, the moderating role of autonomous motivation was not significant. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that in order to reduce and prevent academic procrastination it is important to improve internal control by helping middle school students become confident enough to believe that they have the ability to change their behavior and achieve their aims. At the same time, parents need to be interested in the process rather than only the academic performance of their children and support their autonomy.
Background: A new admission procedure was introduced to Korea when Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) program was first established in 2011. In the new procedure, applicants are reviewed based on quantitative qualifications, which include Pharmacy Education Eligibility Test (PEET) scores, Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scores, and grade point average (GPA), as well as qualitative qualifications such as essay writing, extracurricular activities including volunteer experiences. Purpose: This study aimed to find relationships between entrance qualifications and academic performance of pharmacy students. Method: Entrance qualifications and academic performance of 164 first-year students were analyzed from 2011 to 2013 at Catholic University of Daegu. Other characteristics such as age and gender were also considered in the study. Results: Only GPA and TOEIC scores showed positive Pearson correlation with academic performance, while PEET scores did not. Conclusion: GPA and TOEIC scores could potentially have predictive validity for academic performance in pharmacy school. PEET scores, however, should simply be considered as pre-entrance qualifications, without predictive validity for academic performance.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between Chinese adolescents' academic performance and smartphone overdependence as well as the moderating effects of parental involvement. Method: For this study, a survey was conducted with 472 adolescent students in three middle schools (n = 224) and three high schools (n = 248) in Shanghai, China. The survey consisted of the "S-Scale for Smartphone Addiction," the "Parental Involvement Scale," and questions regarding perceived academic performance using a demographic questionnaire. Results: The following are the major findings. First, after controlling for the students' demographic characteristics, hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed that the students' perceived academic performance was negatively related to the levels of smartphone overdependence. Second, this study found significant moderation effects of parental involvement on the relationship between academic performance and smartphone overdependence. Chinese adolescents with low levels of perceived academic performance and high levels of perceived parental involvement showed high levels of smartphone overdependence. Finally, this study found significant moderation effects of parental involvement on the relationship between academic performance and smartphone overdependence only in middle-school students. Conclusions: These results indicate the need for healthy smartphone use and education and therapy programs for Chinese parents and adolescent children to prevent smartphone overdependence.

This study was conducted by researchers to compare the differences between the ratings of mothers and teachers on young children's academic ability and learning ability, and to confirm their influence on elementary school academic performance ability. This study was conducted using data from the 7th year(2 014) and 10th year(2017) of the panel study on Korean children. The analysis data were individual basic background, academic ability, preparation for learning, and academic performance ability. 600 children were used for the study. We suggests that close interaction and cooperation between mother and teacher are necessary to support young children's academic ability and learning preparation.
Purpose: This review article provides an overview of the importance of breakfast by examining the relationship between breakfast and academic achievement including the papers published in Korean. Methods: This study searched a total of six domestic and international databases. The main search words for searching the database were 'breakfast,' 'morning meal,' 'adolescent,' 'teen or teenage,' 'children' and 'academic performance,' and used search operators when available such as 'breakfast AND adolescent AND academic performance'. Results: We searched a total of 274 studies through six databases and included a total of 15 primary studies in which 12 studies were cross-sectional and three were cohort studies. Since a quantitative integration of the primary studies was difficult to achieve such as performing a meta-analysis, this study performed a descriptive analysis of all the 15 studies and the results have shown that eating breakfast has a significant effect on academic achievement. In other words, students who regularly had breakfast showed more than twice the academic performance compared to those who did not have breakfast, and even though the math scores of students who had breakfast were statistically significantly higher, none of the study results inferred the reason. Conclusion: This study showed the importance of eating breakfast during adolescence by presenting that academic achievement increases with regular or more frequent habits of eating breakfast.
This study investigate the mediating effects of academic self-efficacy on the relationship between academic stress and academic burnout of Korean adolescents. A survey was conducted using a convenient sample drawn from 850 students from nine junior high schools in Kunggi-do Province. Data were analyzed using SAS package program. The results show that many students were dissatisfied with their own academic performance. There was a significant positive relationship between academic stress and academic burnout. In particular, academic performance and studying had a significant interaction effect on academic stress. Academic self-efficacy had negative effects on academic stress and academic burnout. Academic self-efficacy partly mediated the relationship between academic stress and academic burnout. These results suggest that improving academic self-efficacy is crucial for preventing and reducing symptoms of academic stress and academic burnout. In this regard, continuous social support and efforts are needed to develop instructional strategies and educational programs that can improve the academic self-efficacy of adolescents.
Background and Objectives: To assess the academic performance, communication skills, and psychosocial development of prelingual deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) attending mainstream schools, and to evaluate the impact of auditory speech perception on their classroom performance. Subjects and Methods: As participant, 67 children with CI attending mainstream schools were included. A survey was conducted using a structured questionnaire on academic performance in the native language, second language, mathematics, social studies, science, art, communication skills, self-esteem, and social relations. Additionally, auditory and speech performances on the last follow-up were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Most implanted children attending mainstream school appeared to have positive self-esteem and confidence, and had little difficulty in conversing in a quiet classroom. Also, half of the implanted children (38/67) scored above average in general academic achievement. However, academic achievement in the second language (English), social studies, and science were usually poorer than general academic achievement. Furthermore, half of the implanted children had difficulty in understanding the class content (30/67) or conversing with peers in a noisy classroom (32/67). These difficulties were significantly associated with poor speech perception. Conclusions: Improving the listening environment for implanted children attending mainstream schools is necessary.
