This study analyzed the difference between the two situations to verify the effectiveness of the book selection by the subject professionals in a academic library. In this, some circulation statistics before and after introduction to subject specialists were compared. Moreover, by using Minitab and t-test, ANOVA among other statistical techniques, 186,435 books selected 3 years before September 2005 and after 3 years and 622,213 circulation statistics about those books in 'S' University Library were compared and analysed. The results were as follows: (1) After introduction to the subject librarian, the proportion of books selected by librarians were increased. (2) After introduction to subject reference librarian, the foreign books selected by the faculty and the librarians were statistically significantly increased. (3) By academic field, the academic fields of the books selected by the faculty were significantly increased, but the academic fields of the books selected by the students were significantly decreased.

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to explore the effect of knowledge of evidence-based practice (K-EBP) and organizational culture on the innovation behavior of university librarians in South Korea. The structured survey questionnaire consisted of four sections and 60 items. The four sections were concerned with K-EBP, organizational culture, innovation behavior, and EBP-related activities and demographic. The respondents were librarians working in 101 university libraries in South Korea. The results of this study were as follows. First, K-EBP indicated that the respondents had excellent practical skills, but their ability to appraise critically, apply knowledge and to conduct research was weak. Second, the questionnaire scores for K-EBP were significantly positively correlated with those for organizational culture and innovation behavior. Higher K-EBP scores corresponded to higher scores for relation-, innovation-, and task-oriented organizational culture. Third, K-EBP outcomes differed significantly by age group, education level, employment type, job title/seniority, reading of academic journal articles, and attendance at conferences. Organizational culture differed significantly with age. Innovation differed significantly with both age and conference attendance. Fourth, in the hierarchical multiple regression analysis, factors predicting K-EBP scores were education level and reading academic journals. Fifth, the multiple regression analysis identifying factors predicting innovation revealed statistically significant regression coefficients for overall K-EBP and for innovation- and hierarchy-oriented organizational culture. The regression coefficient for perception of a hierarchy-oriented organizational culture was negative. To promote innovation behavior of librarians, we need to foster an innovative organizational culture characterized by communication and cooperation, and improve the ability of librarians to engage in EBP. Educational programs that promote librarian engagement in research-related activities are needed.

In information society, enhancing information literacy is a common goal of the academic and school libraries. Consequently the academic libraries connect with the school libraries through information literacy In this study, a academic library visiting program is presented and proposed as a policy to link the academic and school libraries. This program may be a alternative to activate school library-based teaming and overcome lacks of resources and teacher librarians, in the academic libraries. it may be a policy to improve lacks of materials and carrels and overcome the problem of service increase in the opening academic library for local communities. The intricacies of web development have orchestrated a paradigm shift in academic libraries. The study explored literature on the status of automation of academic libraries and web development in Nigeria. It was established that the functions of library management software are abysmally under-utilized in academic libraries in Nigeria, thus, progression of automation projects remain a swinging pendulum. The paper, therefore, recommends that librarians should acquire the relevant training and plan strategically for all automation projects aimed at incorporating the intricacies of the web and ICTs into library services to fully utilize the functions of the library management systems in line with web developmental stages, thus, be able to compete globally.
The purpose of this study is to suggest ways to improve development plans of academic libraries in Korea, comparing development plans of academic libraries in Korea and strategic plans of academic libraries in advanced countries. For this purpose, development plans and strategic plans of academic libraries in and out of Korea were collected and analyzed. And a rubric evaluation was applied to the case plans. The findings indicate that development plans of academic libraries in Korea are written for present problems and individual work, and lack mission and vision statement. On the other hand, strategic plans of academic libraries in advanced countries present distinct mission and vision statement, and set up goals, objectives, concrete activities in the framework. As a conclusion, this study suggests that academic libraries in Korea need mission statement and vision statement, task force of librarians, links among mission and vision and concrete activities. This study can contribute for librarians of academic libraries to develop strategic plans in Korea. This study can be used as a basic consideration for the establishment and evaluation of strategic plans at academic libraries in Korea. As follow-up studies, further case study about academic library which develops and activates strategic plan in Korea, comparative study on development plans and strategic plans of national libraries and public libraries in Korea and overseas are needed.

The purpose of this study is to develop a job-stress scale for librarians who work in university libraries. The study was first conducted by analyzing existing representative job-stress scales that are used domestically and internationally. To understand the characteristic of particular job stress that academic librarians have, the in-depth interview among qualitative research methods was selected, and 15 librarians who work at a 4-year system university libraries participated in this study. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, the reliability and validity were verified. To analyze the validity, exploratory factor analysis was carried out. To extract factors, principal component analysis was used. To extract factors, principal component analysis was used. For the rotation method, a varimax rotation was applied. A tertiary measurement tool with a total of 46 questions for 11 factors was developed after removing measurement questions that were rejected as a result of the analysis. As a result of factor analysis on the tertiary measurement tool, 11 factors were extracted. Those 11 factors include 'peer relation conflict factor(factor 1)', 'superior-subordinate relation conflict factor (factor 2)', 'work compensation evaluation factor(factor 3)', 'emotional labor factor(factor 4)', 'physical environmental factor(factor 5)', 'employment stability(factor 6)', 'job demand factor(psychological) (factor 7)', 'decision-making and responsibility factor(factor 8)', 'work complexity factor(factor 9)', 'work boundary conflict factor(factor 10)', and 'job demand factor(physical)(factor 11)'.

What is the starting point of discussions for the open access of Korean journals? This study analyzed whether the serials crisis in Western societies are in academic libraries in Korea. The rising of prices of Korean electronic journals in academic libraries and recognition of librarians for it were surveyed. This study found that the subscription fees for web DBs of Korean journals have been increased from 1.3 times to 34 times during the last 10 years. But librarians in the universities did not think that the subscription fees are very high. And the 35% of respondents thought that the subscription fees for the web DBs in academic libraries will be increased to bring to a crisis to libraries. This study suggested that the leading groups of discussions for open access in Korea wilt be interested in the aspects of public goods and social justice, another values of open access.

This dissertation are studying the conceptual structure of decision making situation in libraries, by analyzing the library function, decision makings of library and then seeking economic and efficient alternative decision making by programming the· decision making situations, and finally, introducing how to apply management information system or decision making support system. For this purpose, in order to analyzing necessary factors for the decision making system, the questionnaire used Lickert method were distributed to 400 librarians of 36 universities in Seoul by means of mail. 193 librarians, $48\%$ of the questionnaire, are returned are studied by using 'SYSTAT' statistical software to figure out the factors of the decision making system. This dissertation was put six hypotheses and tested with the returned questionnaire. The following five result can be asserted. First, to the higher degree of the librarians' participation in the important library decision makings, the quality of formal library services are improved regardless of seniority of the work. Secondly, the t-test results show that all of t-test scores of seniority of the work, educational background, and responsibilities of the work are exceeding significant level and perception of decision making was proved to be different depending on seniority of the work, educational background, and responsibilities of the work in libraries. Thirdly, as the results of factor af factor analysis, the encouragement on participation in the library academic activities, the extent to get useful information about performances of library and the improvements of library works were grouped by similar posibilities of distribution and therfore the academic activities, the collection of information and the improvement of library performances is proved to be interrelational each other. Fourthly, the fifth hypothesis of the close relationship between the decision making situation and types of advisor by it was more or less interrelational, but their relationship was not seen some significancies. Lastly, as the dynamic organization of library management forming a special commitee or a project team with librarian can improve the extent and quality of the librarian's participation in the decision making of library works, and thus library will become to performance more rational and effective library management.

The professional duties of librarians and other information workers involve a generalized body of both theoretical and practical knowledge (the so-called, 'common core') which is a n.0, pplicable worldwide without regard to national boundaries, levels of economic and technical development or cultural context. The current study is an attempt to validate and su n.0, pport this common core concept through a detailed examination of its important role in the sound development of library and information science both as a learned subject and as a profession. Following an initial overview of generally agreed upon core areas in the education and training of librarians and information specialists, with particular attention to the manifold social changes rapidly being effected by computers and communication technology, the focus shifts to the proliferation of academic homes for information science education and its implications for core areas in information science. Of note here is the relationship between information science as a broadly accepted social science discipline and the evolving core curriculum in library schools. To this regard the fact that the popularization of computers and communication technology is increasingly blurring the once-sharp differences between traditional librarians and information specialists naturally favors common core concept. Major figures in library and information science education such as Shera, Saracevic and Foskette su n.0, pport this concept and have already identified its theoretical infrastructure. Finally, UNESCO and IFLA are also stressing the common core cure curriculum for library and information science both as guidelines for the Third World and as a means to achieve universally accepted academic standards. In conclusion, the search for a comprehensive common core curriculum in library and information science education is still in the elementary stages. The task of identifying the components of this common core is among the most crucial responsibilities facing today's educators and professionals for the successful elaboration of a common core would enable us to attain three highly desirable professional goals: 1) To determine the basic concepts and principles of library and information science. 2) To serve as the base for further professional education and specialized research. 3) To offer enhanced o n.0, pportunities for integrated library and information science education programs by providing a genuine two-way communication channel between the library and information science professions.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the essence and directions of the library and information science education in Korea. For this purpose, first, the introduction and development of library and information science education in Korea was examined in this research; Second, the problems in the library field as well as the academic community of library and information science are analyzed; Third, based on these findings, the essence and directions of developing library and information science education are explored. In this research, an attempt was made to figure out the essence of library science education with the focus on libraries as 'the quality as a facility', not as 'a facility itself.' Furthermore, it was emphasized that Korean Library Association should establish the essence of library and information science education, develop the standard program for educating professional librarians, and improve the certification system and educational institutions for librarians by connecting the library field with the academic community of library and information science.
