  • This study aims to analyze the current status of e-book management and services in academic libraries and identify related issues in the provision of the services. To do that, it performed case studies with A and B university libraries. E-book usage statistics was collected from each library and interviews were conducted with librarians responsible for e-book management and services. The interviews included questions regarding obstacles to e-book management and services and current issues as well as budget and acquisition, access and catalogues, usage, and marketing for e-books. The results show that in both libraries, the usage of e-books is low compared with that of printed books and the usage of e-books has declined recently. This is because of lack of new books with shortage of budget. Also, the most important issue surrounding e-book services is academic library evaluation, enacted by Academic Library Promotion Act in 2015. This study discussed how the criteria for academic library evaluation influence the way the academic libraries acquire and manage e-books.

  • This study aims to suggest a new evaluating system for academic books in the field of humanities and social sciences in Korea. The data comprised the evaluating systems for researchers' academic achievements at 27 Korean and overseas universities, and questionnaire from researchers. The findings showed that academic books were rated higher twice than articles in Korean universities with various criteria. Universities in the US had no standardized systems, but publishers evaluated academic books. The UK and France had authorized organizations, REF and HCERHE, to evaluate researchers' products, whereas, in Japan, departments evaluated them without fixed systems. About 84% of Korean researchers preferred external evaluation on academic books. It is proposed to establish associations' evaluation, 'more than 200 pages and ISBN', and qualitative approach. 200-600 points can be given on books in the correlation of universities, associations, and Korea Research Foundation.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze user behaviors of books in detail based on circulation data in an academic library. It analyzes circulation patterns of books for ten years from 2006 to 2015, which are surprisingly similar every year. Each pattern follows 'Loan books 20/50 rule' that 20% core collection occupies 50% of its circulation every year. This clarifies users' circulation patterns are highly consistent and very expectable. Also, using the cumulative distribution of book age, it defines the half-life of books and suggests the mathematical formula to measure it. Circulation patterns of the whole loan book and core collection for ten years are very different in terms of subjects, user groups, and divisions. This indicates that core collection plays a significant role in analyzing circulation statistics and usage patterns for the efficient collection development in the future.
