  • Ansan city in the coastal area of the mid-western Korea is known as a newly industrialized city(73.44$Km^2$, 127, 000 persons), with the increase rate of 27.8% in population and mean density of 1, 732 persons/$Km^2$. According to the census of the city(1986), it consists of cultivated field(36.8%), forest(34.2%), industrial area(7.4%), residential area(4.1%) and others(12.5%). The forest vegetation in the city is composed of four associations and two subassociations as follows; Pinus rigida, Pinus densiflora-Rhododendron mucronulatum, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron mucronulatum and Robinia pseudo-acacia asociation, and Quercus mongolica-Corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica and Robinia pseudoacacia-Alnus hirsuta subassociation. Various environmental conditions have been changed with the progress of urbanization of the city, since 1977. For example, a heat island phenomenon, which is the air temperature of 2 or 3$^{\circ}C$ higher in the central area than that of the boundary area, and floral changes caused by air pollutants such as decreasing bryophyte species along increasing SO$_2$ concentration.

  • Suppression subtractive hybridization was used to isolate wound-induced genes from soybean. One of the wound-induced genes, gmwi143 designated as GmCCR, showed high homology with genes encoding cinnamoyl-CoA reductase (CCR; EC 1.2.1.44). Deduced amino acid sequences encoded by GmCCR showed the highest identity (77%) with those of Acacia CCR. There are 2 CCR genes highly homologous to GmCCR in soybean genome based on Phytozome DB analysis. RNA expression of GmCCR was specifically induced by local and systemic wounding, drought, high salinity or by ultraviolet stress. Our study suggests that GmCCR may be involved in resistance mechanism during abiotic stresses in plants.

  • Hot water extractives of sawdust/particle from domestic and foreign wood species, which were composed of pitch pine, Korean pine, larch, Italy poplar, acacia and oak as Korean wood species, Malaysian oil palm and German spruce were quantitatively analyzed with thin layer chromatography. Sugar components of saccharose, galactose, glucose, fructose and arabinose were contained in these wood species. It was assumed that arabinose and glucose are major inhibitory components against cement hardening in larch and oil palm, respectively, since both species contain a large amount of each sugar. In contrast, fructose might not influence so badly on a cement hardening, when considering that fructose was contained much in Italy poplar with a good cement hardening character. Galactose was a minor component.

  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of Caragana chamlagu $L_{AMARCK}$ roots, which was known to be effective as antineuralgic, antirheumatic and antiarthritic, etc. in the folk cures of this country. The ether extract of the root has shown significant effects against the rat paw edema induced by 1% carrageenin and its potency was comparable with acetylsalicylic acid, a anti-inflammatory drug, when given orally in 5% acacia gum suspension. The ethanol and hexane extracts, on the other hand, stimulated the formation of rat paw edema under the same experimentation.

  • The application of specialty chemicals in a pulp mill system for the purpose of problem solving or process enhancement is often demonstrated and supported by data produced in laboratory testing. Hercules Chemical Solutions Pte Ltd., a major specialty chemical supplier to the Asian pulp and paper industry, partnered with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on several occasions to provide insight into the efficacy of proposed chemical treatments designed for local operating conditions and wood species. This paper presents an example of a chemically-assisted deresination project. The resulting surfactant chemistry proved to be a superior deresinator for plantation grown acacia wood and has been successfully implemented in an Asian pulp and paper mill.

  • Image processing technique was adapted for exploring the more convenient ways to investigate the drying characteristics of wood. The acquisition of information about drying characteristics is indispensable for the development or improvement of dry-kiln schedules. A small internal fan type wood dry kiln was combined with image-processing and data-acquisition systems to monitor continuously the formation of checks and moisture reduction during drying. All the images and data were analyzed to improve or estimate the dry-kiln schedules and predict the drying time which would be required to dry green wood to 10% moisture content in internal fan type kiln. Samples of 20 mm- and 50 mm-thick Metasequoia glyptostrobodies, Paulownia coreana Uyeki, Pinus densiflora Sieb. Et Zucc., Platanus occidentalis L., Quercus acutissima and Robinia pseudo-acacia were used to verify the potentiality of this technique.

  • Wood from tropical plantation forests has lower physical and mechanical properties than mature wood. Furfuryl alcohol (FA) impregnation into the wood could help to enhance hydrophobic properties, dimensional stability, and structural strength. Furfurylation was applied to specimens of the following four fast-growing tropical wood species: jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba), sengon (Falcataria moluccana), mangium (Acacia mangium), and pine (Pinus merkusii). The discoloration and physical and mechanical properties were subsequently measured, and the results showed that furfurylated wood had a darker color and better physical and mechanical properties than untreated wood. Specifically, the furfurylated wood had higher density, modulus of elasticity, and hardness and lower moisture content, water absorption, swelling, and shrinkage. The furfurylation significantly enhanced physical and mechanical properties.

  • In order to supplement the flame-retardant performance of oil stain, which can prevent wooden buildings from contamination, (NH4)2HPO4, a phosphorus flame-retardant, was added to oil stain and applied for each type of plywood, and an experiment was conducted. The addition rate was set to 0-60%, but white powder appeared on the surface of plywood from 40% and thus it was impossible to experiment, so the maximum addition rate was selected as 30%. As a result of the experiment, acacia plywood had the best performance. As the rate of addition of the flame retardant increased, the remaining time and carbonization length of all plywood decreased, but the carbonization length of the MDF plywood was not met with the standards.
