  • In order to utilize cinder melting slag as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater, its environmental stability was verified by heavy metal elution experiment and improved by pre-treatment. Possibilities of improving its function as an absorbent was considered. Absorption characteristics of melting slag before and after the pre-treatment were analyzed by heavy metal equilibrium and stationary-phase column experiments, which in turn were analyzed by comparison experiment with activated carbon. As a result of heavy metal elution experiment, every metal item existed in a much lower amount than the criteria or was not detected, implying that there is no problem recycling it. Absorption equilibrium experiment showed that the time for pre-treatment melting slag to reach the equilibrium was reduced, while the absorbed amount was greatly increased. Stationary-phase column experiment assures us that the elimination rate was not changed much by influx rate, pH and the change in packing volume rate, indicating that this melting slag can be used not only as a filter media to control the quality of early rainwater but also in many areas of water-processing.

  • A sensitive method for the determination of trace copper(II) after the preconcentration by adsorbing its cupferron complex onto microcrystalline benzophenone was developed.Several experimental conditions such as the pH of sample solution, concentration of cupferron, amount of benzophenone and atirring time were optimized. Trace compper(II) in 100mL solution was chelated with $3.0\;{\times}\;10^3$ M cupferron at pH 5.0. After 0.20g benzophenone, The benzophenone adsorbing Cu-cupferron complex was filtered and then Cu-cupferron complex was desorbed in 10 mL ethanol. Copper was determined by a flame atomic absorption spectrophotomethry. The interfering effects of diverse concomitant ions were investigated. Fe(III) interfered seriously with, but the interference by Fe(III) was completely eliminated by adjusting the concentration of copferron to $5.0\;{\times}\;10^3$ M. The detection limit of this method was 8.6${\times}$10 M(5.5 ngmL$^1$). Recoveries of 97% and 96% were obtained for Cu(II) in a stream water and a brass sample, respectively. Based on the results from the experiment. this proposed technique could be applied to the determination of copper(II) in real samples.

  • The nanoparticle magnetite of which diameter was about 3 nm was synthesized in a homogeneous aqueous solution without a template. The synthesized magnetite nanoparticle was easily oxidized to maghemite in an ambient condition. The magnetic properties of the ferrite nanoparticle show superparamagnetism at room temperature and its blocking temperature is around 93 K. Modifying the sequential adsorption method of metal bisphosphonate, we have prepared a multilayer thin film of the ferrite nanoparticle on planar substrates such as glass, quartz and Si wafer. In this multilayer the ferrite nanoparticle layer and an alkylbisphosphonate layer are alternately placed on the substrates by simple immersion in the solutions of the ferrite nanoparticle and 1, 10-decanediylbis (phosphonic acid) (DBPA), alternately. This is the first example, as far as we know, of nanoparticle/alkyl-bisphosphonate multilayer which is an analogy of metal bisphosphonate multilayer. UV-visible absorption and infrared reflection-absorption studies show that the growth of each layer is very systematic and the film is considerably optically transparent to visible light of 400-700 nm. Atomic force microscopic images of the film show that the surface morphology of the film follows that of the substrate in μm-scale image and the nanoparticle-terminated surface is differentiated from the DBPA-terminated one in nm-scale image. The magnetic properties of this ferrite/DBPA thin film are almost the same as those of the ferrite nanoparticle powder only.

  • The reactions of thermal hydrogen atoms H(g) with the Ge(100) surface were examined with temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) mass spectrometry. Concomitant $H_2$ and $CH_4$ TPD spectra taken from the H(g)-irradiated Ge(100) surface were distinctly different for low and high H(g) doses/substrate temperatures. Reactions suggested by our data are: (1) adsorbed mono(${\beta}_1$)-/di-hydride(${\beta}_2$)-H(a) formation; (2) H(a)-by-H(g) abstraction; (3) $GeH_3$(a)-by-H(g) abstraction (Ge etching); and (4) hydrogenated amorphous germanium a-Ge:H formation. While all these reactions occur, albeit at higher temperatures, also on Si(100), H(g) absorption by Ge(100) was not detected. This is in contrast to Si(100) which absorbed H(g) readily once the surface roughened on the atomic scale. While this result is rather against expectation from its weaker and longer Ge-Ge bond as well as a larger lattice constant, we attribute the absence of direct H(g) absorption to insufficient atomic-scale surface roughening and to highly efficient subsurface hydrogenation at moderate (>300 K) and low (${\leq}300K$) temperatures, respectively.

  • Thallium is quantitatively retained by 1,10-phenanthroline and tetraphenylborate onto benzophenone in the pH range 0-11 from a large volumes of aqueous solutions of various samples. After filtration, the solid mass consisting of thallium complex and benzophenone is dissolved with 5 mL of dimethylformamide and the metal was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometric. About 0.4 ㎍ of thallium can be concentrated from 400 mL of aqueous sample, where its concentration is as low as 1.0 ng/mL. Eight replicate determinations of 8.0 ㎍/mL of thallium in final dimethylformamide solution gave a mean absorbance of 0.160 with a relative standard deviation of 1.7%. The sensitivity for 1% absorption was 0.22 ㎍/mL. The interference of a large number of anions and cations has been studied and the optimized conditions developed were utilized for the trace determination of thallium in various alloys and biological samples.

  • 1. The physical and anatomical properties investigated in this study are the ones, which may give more effect on absorption of preservatives, such as variation of annual ring, specific gravity, shrinkage, E.M.C. of desorption and adsorption at 70 percent relative humidity condition, general and minute properties of wood. 2. On this study, the positive effects of wood structure, in particular, the appearances of tyloses in vessel element upon the absorption of creosote were observed. 3. Thirteen percent sodium chloride solution treatment and boiling hot water treatment have shown poor results to improve the preservative absorption characteristics of tested species however, some slight difference between treated and control could be seen. • In this study, we examined the properties of the concrete for the adsorption of carbon dioxide by adding in photosynthetic bacteria. As for the experimental plan, we measured slump, carbon dioxide concentration and compressive strength. The findings revealed the non-plastic cement added with photosynthetic bacteria had the greatest flexibility and showed carbon dioxide absorption and condensation delay due to the sugar constituents of photosynthetic bacteria. Giver the progress in the studies on the strength development, it is estimated to be used as CO2 reduction concrete.

  • Not only in order to determine reasonable application amounts of PCP in terms of soil texture, but also to get basic data for fish-toxicity-free treatment by estimating fish toxicity, some aspects of PCP adsorption were observed taking various paddy soils with different physico-chemical characteristics in the Choongbook Area as samples. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There was a positive correlation between PCP adsorption and clay contents, total nitrogen, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable bases, and phosphorus absorption coefficients, respectively; whereas there was a negative one between PCP adsorption and pH. Although they were not significant, it was remarkable that there was a relatively large amount of correlation between PCP adsorption and clay contents, $H^+,\;Mg^{++}$, and CEC, respectively. 2. PCP adsorption in terms of soil texture was in the order of Clay>Loam>Sandy loam. 3. Although PCP adsorption in the $H_2O_2-treated$ soils decreased remarkably, it was not proportional to the humus contents. 4. The order of PCP adsorption in the exchangeable base-treated soils was H^+-exchanged soil>$K^+-soil$>$Na^+-soil$>$Ca^{++}-soil$>Mg^{++}-soil. 5. Langmuir's and Freundlich's adsorption isotherms were applicable to the PCP adsorption, and thereby were able to be calculated maximum adsortion amounts of PCP, bond energy, and the depths of adsorption layers. 6. Maximum adsorbed amounts of PCP were 212.14 mg/100gr in Clayey loam, 97.28 to 121.59mg/100gr in Loam, and 32.92 to 91.74mg/100gr in Sandy loam, respectively. 7. The depths of mixed layers of limiting application for fish-toxicity-free treatment were 0.88cm of the Jinchun soil, the shallowest and 4.29 cm of the Naesan-ri Sandy loam, the deepest.

  • The existing metal getters are invariably covered with thin oxide layers in air and the native oxide layer must be dissolved into the getter materials for activation. However, high temperature is needed for the activation, which leads to unavoidable deleterious effects on the devices. Therefore, to improve the device efficiency and gas-adsorption properties of the device, it is essential to synthesize the getter with a method that does not require a thermal activation temperature. In this study, getter material was synthesized using palladium oxide (PdOx) which can adsorb $H_2$ gas. To enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen and moisture absorption, a porous layer with a large specific area was fabricated by an etching process and used as supporting substrates. It was confirmed that the moisture-absorption performance of the $SiO_2/Si$ was characterized by water vapor volume with relative humidity. The gas-adsorption properties occurred in the absence of the activation process.

  • The adsorption ability of polar and toxic substance was greatly enhanced by treating activated carbon with acid solution and impregnating iron, copper, or silver by using in 0.1 M $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O,\;CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O,\;AgNO_3$ 300 mL per activated carbon 50 g. Physical and chemical properties of the metal impregnated activated carbons were measured using specific surface area, pore volume and size distribution, scanning eletron microscope(SEM), adsorption isotherm. When activated carbon was treated with acid, the quantity of impregnated metal increased about 1.3 times since the micropores were converted to mesopores or macropores. Both the physical absorption by micropores and chemical absorption by metal ions could be achieved simultaneously with the metal impregnated activated carbon because the capacity of micro pores did not change even after metal ions were impregnated.
