  • To study the effect of surface crosslinked layer on the crosslinked poly(sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent, we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with 5, 10 and 20 g of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete. We measured the compressive and flexural strength of mortars having 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA. We observed the increase of compressive and flexural strength of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars except for the 0.5 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (20 g) added cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) added cement mortar showed about 16% and 10% increased compressive and flexural strength than those of plain cement mortar. To study the effect of porosity on compressive and flexural strength, we used FE-SEM and porosimeter. FE-SEM analysis showed swollen cPSMAEGDMA (5 g) filled between calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) crystals. We observed the decreased porosity of the cPSA-EGDMA added cement mortars than that of plain cement mortar. 1.0 wt% cPSA-EGDMA (5 g) cement mortar showed the lowest porosity of 16.5%.

  • The present paper investigates the performance of the KOH aqueous solution as an absorbent to capture carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). The chemical absorption was carried out according to consecutive reactions that are generated in the order of $K_2CO_3$ and $KHCO_3$. The overall absorption was completed with following the physical absorption. When the absorption was conducted with the KOH as the limiting reactants in batch a reactor, $K_2CO_3$ production rate was the 1st order reaction for $OH^-$. However, $KHCO_3$ generation reaction was independent of the $CO_3^{2-}$ concentration and the rate was calculated to be $0.18gCO_2/min$ for all KOH absorbents, which is the same value of the reaction rate using $K_2CO_3$ aqueous solution as the absorbents. The overall $CO_2$ capture ratio of the 5% KOH absorbent was estimated to be 19% and the individual value in section 1 and 2 was 57 and 12%, respectively. The amount of $CO_2$ absorbed in the solution was very slightly less than the theoretical value, which was ascribed to the side reaction that produces $K_2CO_3{\cdot}KHCO_3{\cdot}1.5H_2O$ during the reaction and the consequent diminish in $CO_2$ absorption in the KOH solution.

  • To capture and recover carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), we impregnated honeycomb made of ceramic paper with $K_2CO_3$ and its absorption characteristics of $CO_2$ were investigated. The absorption amount of $CO_2$ on the honeycomb absorbent impregnated with $K_2CO_3$ was 13.8 wt% at a constant temperature ($70^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (66%) condition. Because the absorption amount of $CO_2$ achieved almost the same loading ratio of $K_2CO_3$ (17.6 wt%), the absorption reaction of $CO_2$ by $K_2CO_3$ on the honeycomb absorbent seems to be going smoothly. In addition, $CO_2$ absorption breakthrough characteristics of the honeycomb absorbent were analyzed at the temperature range of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$, and the water vapor was fed to an absorption column before the feeding of $CO_2$ or simultaneously with $CO_2$. As a result, the absorption capacity of $CO_2$ was more enhanced using the water vapor supplying before $CO_2$ than that of simultaneous supplying. It was confirmed by temperature programmed desorption analysis that the $KHCO_3$ produced by the absorption reaction of $K_2CO_3$ and $CO_2$ is regenerated by the desorption of $CO_2$ at a temperature of about $128^{\circ}C$.

  • Global warming has mentioned as one of the international problems and these researches have conducted. Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology has improved due to increasing importance of reducing emission of carbon dioxide. Among of various CCUS technologies, mineral carbonation can converted $CO_2$ into high-cost materials with low energy. Existing researches has been used ions extracted solid wastes for mineral carbonation but the procedure is complicated. However, the procedure using seawater is simple because it contained high concentration of metal cation. This research is a basic study using seawater-based wastewater for mineral carbonation. 3 M Monoethanolamine (MEA) was used as $CO_2$ absorbent. Making various concentrations of seawater solution, simulated seawater powder was used. Precipitated metal carbonate salts were produced by mixing seawater solutions and $rich-CO_2$ absorbent solution. They were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and studied characteristic of producing precipitated metal carbonate and possibility of reusing absorbent.

  • In this study, CO2 separation experiment was performed on a CH4/CO2 mixed gas using a ceramic hollow fiber membrane contactor module (HFMC). In order to fabricate high-durability HFMC, a high-durability hollow fiber membrane was prepared and evaluated. HFMC was fabricated using the prepared hollow fiber membrane, and the experiment used a mixture of CH4/CO2 (30% CO2, CH4 balance) and monoethanolamine (MEA). During HFMC operation, the effect of gas and absorbent pressure on the CO2 removal efficiency was evaluated. The CO2 removal efficiency increased as the gas pressure increased, and the CO2 absorption flux also showed a tendency to increase with the liquid flow rate. In addition, when the CO2 absorption rate was less than 40%, LTS-1, a counter-current form where the absorbent enters from the bottom, has higher CO2 removal performance than LTS-2, a countercurrent form in which the absorbent enters from the top. and when the absorption rate was 40% or higher, LTS-2 had higher performance than LTS-1.

  • Due to the strong dependence on fossil fuels within the history of human progress, it leads to disaster of the whole world like flood, shortage of water and extinction of the species. In order to curb carbon dioxide emissions, many technologies are being developed. Among them, porous carbon materials have important advantages over other absorbent, such as high surface area, thermal and chemical resistance, low cost, various pore distribution and low energy requirement for their regeneration. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has attracted the significant research efforts for reducing green house gas emission using several absorbent and process. Moreover, the absorbent are used for the separation of bio mass gas that contains methane which is considered a promising fuel as new green energy resource. In this review, we summarized the recent studies and trend about the porous carbon materials for CCS as well as separation from the biogas.

  • Recently, biofilm reactors are considered as efficient wastewater treatment system in rural areas, because of characteristics of easy operation and economic feasibility. In order to select the most efficient media, an experimental apparatus with five different media was designed, installed and examined. The media used in this study were zeolite, artificial sponge gourd, absorbent biofilter, non-woven fabric and charcoal. With only one month investigation, all five media showed high removal efficiencies of BOD.
