  • Reproductive losses in a herd can be huge. Fetal reabsorption or undefined infertility often remain undetected. Routine herds monitoring for exposure, controlling the introduction of potential agent carriers, appropriate biosafety procedures, and vaccination where possible are together the best security against abortion and stillbirth inducing disease. For biosecurity of local farms, we performed antibody titers of abortion and stillbirth related diseases such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV), Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii and Campylobacter fetus subsp venerealis. The blood samples were collected from 500 female Hanwoo over 1 year old of 100 farms in Jeonbuk eastern area. Champhylobater serological test was evaluated by the standard tube agglutination test (STAT) and other pathogen's antibodies were detected by indirect-enzyme linked immunoassay (I-ELISA). The seroprevalence of abortion and stillbirth inducing disease were BVDV 72.4%, IBRV 13.0%, N. caninum 1.2%, T. gondii 10.4% and C. venerealis 0.6%, irrespectively.

  • A total of 170 litters (575 samples) of aborted and stillbirth fetuses submitted to the Gyeongsangbuk-Do Veterinary Service Laboratory (GVSL) between January 2006 and December 2010 from pig farms in Gyeongbuk province were studied to identify porcine abortion- and stillbirth-associated viruses such as Porcine parvovirus (PPV), Encephalomyocarditis Virus (EMCV), Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV), and Aujeszky's Disease Virus (ADV). Virus was not detected by PCR in 36 litters, but viral antibody was detected by HI and ELISA in 93 litters. The majority of etiological viruses were PPV (67 litters, 39.4%), EMCV (50 litters, 29.4%), PRRSV (15 litters, 8.8%), and JEV (11 litters, 6.5%); ADV was not detected by either PCR or ELISA. Single infection occurred in 52 litters (30.6%), co-infection occurred in 41 litters (24.1%), and unknown cases with no detection of any of the five viruses occurred in 77 litters (45.3%).

  • Few studies of the side effects of the FMD vaccine have been performed domestically and studies in accordance to region have been limited. This study was performed by inoculating cows raised in the Daejeon province with the FMD vaccine and observing the side effects following inoculation. From January to February of 2011, 3,378 cows vaccinated with the FMD vaccine, in 143 different farms in the Daejeon province were analysed for adverse effects after inoculation. A total of 66 cows showed adverse effects after the first FMD vaccination and adverse effects observed were abortion/stillbirth (24, 36.4%), death (19, 28.8%), premature birth (14, 21.2%), skin lesions (8, 12.1%), vaginal swelling (1, 1.5%). A total of 29 cows showed adverse effects after the second FMD vaccination and adverse effects observed were abortion/stillbirth (17, 58.6%), premature birth (5, 17.2%), facial swelling (4, 13.8%), death (3, 10.3%). Through these results, continuous national research of the side effects of the FMD vaccine should be carried out continuously henceforth.

  • Equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) is an economically important pathogen of horses and exerts its major impact by inducing abortion storms and sporadic abortions in pregnant mares, early neonatal death in foals, and respiratory disease in young horses. Although equine herpesvirus type 4 (EHV-4) rarely causes clinical manifestations of disease in organs other than the respiratory track, isolated cases of myeloencephalopathy and sporadic abortions have been reported in EHV-4 infections. Here, we report an abortion storm in Thoroughbred breeding farms in Jeju island, South Korea. It occurred for 16 days from first abortion to last one. There were no clinical signs prior to abortion and stillbirth in broodmares. Two PCR-primers were made on glycoprotein B gene of EHV-1 and EHV-4 to amplify specific common regions of the viruses. We could detect the virus specific genes in aborted samples by PCR, and concluded that the cause of abortion storm was EHV infection. This report describes the first abortion storm case caused by EHV in Thoroughbred breeding farms in South Korea.

  • 1) During 5 month(Oct. 1988-Feb. 1989), abortion(11 heads), stillbirth(3 heads), and congenital abnormalities(28 heads) of newborn were occurred in 42 milk cows raised in Cheju island. These cows were diagnosed with Akabane disease by clinical, pathological and serological test. 2) In May and Oct. 1989, 213 tattles at 10 farms were investigated on the actual condition of possessing Akabane antibody. The results was that 210 heads(98.6%) in 213 cattles reacted as positive condition in Akabane antibody. The antibody titer was from 4 to over 256. 3) During some years, the author suppose that the vaccination for Akabane disease will be unnecessary because of higher positive antibody reaction except the newly introduced cattle.

  • A considerably high rate of abnormal deliveries of unknown etiology was observed among dairy cattles from November 1988 to February 1989 and Korean native tattles from January to April 1990. The abnormal deliveries consisted of abortions, stillbirths and calf deformities refers to as congenital arthrogryposis hydranencephaly (AH )syndrome. In order to know the level of Akabane antibody of dairy cattle raised in Kyungbuk province, serum neutralization test was conducted with Akabane virus(OBE-1 strain) and HmLu(Hamster lung) cell line. The results were summarized as follows. 1. During 4 months(Nov. 1988-Feb. 1989), abortion (3 heads), stillbirth(1 head) and congenital abnormalities(13 heads) of newborn were occurred in 17 dairy cattles raised in Kyungbuk province. 2. During 4 months(Jan.-Apr.1990), stillbirth(2 heads) and congenital deformities (13 heads) of newborn were occurred in 15 Korean native tattles raised in Kyungbuk province. 3. In Fev, and Apr. 1990, 1,005 dairy cattles at 99 farms were investigated on the actual condition of possessing Akabane antibody. The result was that 1,000 heads (99.9%) in 1,005 dairy cattles reacted as positive condition in Akahane antibody. The antibody titer was from 4 to over 256. 4. 189 heads (18.8%) of 1,005 dairy cattles werw below antibody titer 8 and 816 heads (81.2%) were over 16. 5. Akabane antibody titer of east coast legions(Pohang Yeongil etc) was all over 16, that of internal legions (Yeongiu, Andong. etc) was relatively low, The result suggest that the vaccination for Akabane disease will be unnecessary for the time being because of possessing higher antibody titer reaction except the newly introduced cattle and Akabane virus was widely disseminated in kyungbuk province during the summer months in 1987 or 1988.

  • Bovine viral diarrhea Virus (BVDV) infections cause respiratory, gastrointestinal, and reproductive problems, such as infertility, abortion, stillbirth, and sickly offspring. Many countries have reduced the economic damage through the application of different control programmes, and some have successfully eradicated BVD. Detection and elimination of cattle persistently infected (PI) with BVDV is important for BVD eradication because PI cattle are a main source of BVD transmission. In this study, the prevalence of Korean native cattle persistently infected (PI) with BVDV was investigated and determined in 49 farms with 3,050 cattle. The all samples were collected by ear notch sampling. Korean native cattle with initial positives on antigen-ELISA (Ag-ELISA) were sampled again after 3~4 weeks and cattle with second positives in both Ag-ELISA and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were identified as PI cattle. Among the 49 farms, 14 (28.6%) farms had at least more than one PI cow and 21 (0.69%) of 3,050 cattle were determined as PI cattle. As a result of this work, it is suggested that national BVD eradication program is required to reduce economic losses by BVDV infection in Korean cattle industries.

  • From November 1978 to April 1979, there occurred among cows many cases of abortion, premature birth, stillbirth and congenital arthrogryposis or hydranencephaly in Kyongki-do province in Korea. Epizootics recurred between February and May, 1980 in the same area. Six calves born at 8 or 10 months of gestation were examined by means of pathology and one of the calves was examined by serological test. And a survey on local occurrence of the disease in other than Kyongki-do province, was conducted. 1. At necropsy, some calves showed distinct lesions such deformities of the limbs and the vertebrae as arthrogryposis or scoliosis. Other calves revealed arthrogryposis and partial or total deficience of the cerebral hemispheres with hydranencephaly. 2. In the calves with deformities the skeletal muscle showed histologically severe hypoplasia of the muscle fibers with cellular infiltration. In the central nervous system of the calves with hydranencephaly there were minute cystic cavitation and the decrease of ventral horn cells of the spinal cord in the number. 3. Similar epizootics were also observed in the same season in the other several provinces such as Chungoheongnam-do, Kangwon-do and Jeonrabuk-do. 4. Anti-Akabane virus antibody was detected in precolostral blood from the calf with arthroglposis and hydranencephaly syndrome. 5. On these findings of the disease it was diagnosed as Akabane disease presenting the first report on the epizootics in Korea.

  • Arthropod-borne viruses (Arboviruses) are transmitted by arthropods such as Culicoides biting midges and cause abortion, stillbirth, and congenital malformation in ruminants, apparently leading to economic losses to farmers. To monitor the distribution of Culicoides and to determine their relationship with different environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, wind speed, and altitude of the farms) on 5 cattle farms, Culicoides were collected during summer season (May-September) in 2016 and 2017, and analyzed for identification of species and detection of arboviruses. About 35% of the Culicoides were collected in July and the collection rate increased with increase in temperature and humidity. The higher altitude where the farms were located, the more Culicoides were collected on inside than outside. In antigen test of Culicoides against 5 arboviruses, only Chuzan virus (CHUV) (2.63%) was detected in 2016. The Akabane virus (AKAV), CHUV, Ibaraki virus and Bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) had a positive rate of less than 1.8% in 2017. In antigen test of bovine whole blood, AKAV (12.96%) and BEFV (0.96%) were positive in only one of the farms. As a result of serum neutralization test, antibodies against AKAV were generally measured in all the farms. These results suggest that vaccination before the season in which the Culicoides are active is probably best to prevent arbovirus infections.
