  • In this paper, the architecture of the LAN Emulation service defined by the ATM Forum is introduced. In order to use the vast base of the existing LAN application software in ATM network. LAN Emulation provides a MAC layer service emulating connectionless services of legacy LANs on ATM networks. LAN Emulation forms a logical overlay network, called and emulated LAN, on top of an ATM network. LAN Emulation service comprises a set of LAN Emulation Clients(LECs) residing in end stations of an emulated LAN and three logical service entities : LAN Emulation Configuration Server (LECS), LAN Emulation Server(LES). and Broadcast and Unknown Server(BUS). LEC utilizes the services provided by these three servers to provide seamless interworking between legacy LANs and ATM networks, and to support transparent communications between LAN applications over ATM.

  • In this paper, we propose an ATM processor suitable for VoDSL subscriber's equipments. The processor is composed of ATM block, AAL protocol block and ATS scheduler, and provides up to 4 VCC which service data and voice traffics on the ATM network. The proposed ATS scheduler can guarantee QoS of the voice traffic and supports multiple AAL2 packet. The ATM processor is manufactured on the 0.35 micron fabrication line of HYNIX semiconductor and provides the maximum data transfer rate of up to 52 Mbps. We implement the LAD, which is the VoDSL subscriber's equipment. The experimental results on the test bed network shows that the proposed hardware scheme successfully services most of the applications of the VoDSL services.

이에, ATM 기반의 인터넷에서 IP 멀티캐스트의 효율적인 처리를 위하여 MARS(Multicast Address Resolution Server)가 제안되었고, 기존의 최선 서비스 기반의 인터넷에서 QoS(Quality of Service)를 지원하기 위하여 RSVP(Resource Reservation Protocol)가 제안되었다. Abstract Emerging real time multimedia applications require multicast service with a QoS(Quality of Service) support. An overlay service architecture MARS(Multicast Address Resolution Server) is proposed to support IP multicast over an ATM network, and a resource reservation protocol RSVP is proposed to provide QoS support in the Internet which is originally based upon best effort service only. In this paper, we propose two schemes to support IP multicast service with QoS support over ATM networks: 'RSVP Previous Hop Node(RPHN) scheme' and 'MARS server based scheme'. In RPHN scheme, the RSVP reservation messages are transported via one-to-one ATM control VC from the egress nodes to the ingress nodes of the the multicast flow set up between each pair of nodes. The RSVP message processing occurs at the ingress nodes of the multicast flow. Whereas, in the MARS server based scheme, the RSVP reservation messages are transported via the MARS control VCs between the egress nodes and the MARS server. The RSVP message processing burden is imposed at MARS server in this scheme. For MARS server based scheme, no additional ATM VC is required for RSVP reservation message transmission, while the processing burden at the MARS server is high. Simulation results show that the MARS server based scheme, may accomplish RSVP reservation message delivery with smaller delay as well as saving of the number of ATM VCs. When the number of simultaneous RSVP flows in the MARS cluster is large, however, MARS based scheme may suffer performance degradation since MARS server becomes a performance bottleneck.

  • ATM Form has defined the guaranteed frame rate (GFR) service to provide minimum cell rate (MCR) guarantees for TCP traffic in ATM networks and allow it to fairly share residual bandwidth. GFR switch implementation consists of the frame-based generic cell rate algorithm (F-GCRA) and a frame forwarding mechanism. The F-GCRA identifies frames that are eligible for an MCR guarantee. The frame forwarding mechanism buffers cells at a frame unit according to information provided by the F-GCRA and forwards the buffered cells to an output port according to its scheduling discipline. A simple GFR mechanism with shared buffer with a global threshold is a feasible implementation mechanism, but has been known that it is insufficient to guarantee the MCR. This paper has estimated performance of GFR service for TCP traffic over ATM switches with the simple FIFO-based mechanism

  • A number of MPLS ATM systems have been proposed to increase the access speed of current rooters, which only support the beat-effort service. However, the MPLS ATM systems have to support the so-called differential service, which discriminates the applications according to the servile clads because they do not be satisfied the Internet users who use diverse applications. In this paper, to support this differential service a detailed forwarding procedure based on a LSP control method and an application-based marking algorithm is suggested. The LSP control method establishes several different LSPs for each FEC according to the service class and the application-based marking algorithm chooses a proper differential service depending on the application category. Also, a design scheme of forwarding engine, which can be easily implemented with a minimum modification of existing MPLS ATM systems is proposed. And, the best simulation result of high priority application category is gained when the proposed forwarding algorithm is compared with existing algorithms.

Abstract While we have been focusing on development of ATM switching systems, recently the demand on service by use of ATM switching system is increasing rapidly. Among various ATM services, the Internet service should be provided in an ATM network since the Internet service has been the basic data service. Many domestic engineers consider the classical IP and ARP over ATM (IPOA) to be an appropriate method for interworking of IP and ATM because the IP is the network protocol used in most domestic data networks, and the IPOA is simpler and has less overhead than other approaches. However, it is not easy for a developer to implement the IPOA function module interoperable with other existing ones due to the incomplete description of IETF's RFC specifications, misunderstanding of designer and/or developer, and incompatible vendors' specifications. In this paper, we show several case studies undertaken for interoperability tests of IPOA products between our product and other vendor's products, and discuss the implementation requirement of the IPOA software to be interoperable with the existing IPOA equipment. The design and implementation requirements presented in this paper will reduce the effort of IPOA-developing engineers and time required for interoperability test. Also, this contribution will be helpful in IP/ATM interworking areas.

  • Recently ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology is facing challenges from Integrated Service IP(Internet Protocol), IP router, Gigabit Ethernet. Although ATM is approved by ITU-T as the standard technology in B-ISDN, its survival is still in question. In the ATM networks, the Guaranteed Frame Rate(GFR) service has been designed to accommodate non-real-time applications, such as TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)/IP based traffic. The GFR service not only guarantees a minimum throughput at the frame level, but also supports a fairshare of available resources. We have studied different discarding and scheduling schemes, and compared their throughput and fairness when TCP/IP Traffic is carried. Through simulations, we know that only per-VC queueing with weighted Round Robin(WRR) can guarantee Minimum Cell Rate Among all the Schemes that have been experimented, we recommend DT-EPD(Dynamic Threshold-Early Packet Discard) integrated with MCRplus(Minimum Cell Rate) to support the GFR service.

  • In general, cell transmission delay is more sensitive for real time video service rather than cell losses in a wireless ATM network. Existing handoff schemes, which are emphasizing the prevention of cell losses, have limitations in cell transmission delay to satisfy QoS. In this paper, we propose a scheme to minimize transmission delay generated during the handoff and to maintain the sequence of cells. Transmission delay can be reduced by transmitting ATM cells with low CLP(i.e., CLP=0) prior to others and by discarding cells with high CLP(i.e., CLP= 1). The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is suitable for delay sensitive real time VBR service as well as fast handoff by giving high CLP to less meaningful MPEG frames.
