A study on Snack Purchasing Behavior, Understanding of Food and Nutrition Labeling of Middle School Students in Naju Area (중학생의 간식구매행동, 식품과 영양표시의 이해도 - 나주지역 일부학생들을 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate perception of snack purchasing behaviors and labeling of foods and nutrition of the middle school students. The survey was conducted from 424 students who are boys and girls of middle school in Naju. Data were analyzed by a SPSS program. According to the survey, snack purchase place had a significant difference between gender(p<.05), and all of the boys and girls responded at a high rate that it's convenience store. Snack eating frequency had a significant difference between boys and girls(p<.05). Boys responded that they ate 1~2 times per a week the most, and girls responded that they ate 1~2 times per a month the most. As for snack purchasing behaviors, depending on gender, that of boys was 2.76 in average and that of girls was 2.87, lower than middle. The reason why students didn't check up food labeling, depending on gender and all of the boys and girls responded 'Expiration date' was first confirmed. As for the understanding of food expression, depending on snack expenses, the reason why food expression contents were hard showed a significant difference, depending on snack expenses(p<.05). As for the understanding of food expression, depending on snack purchase attitude, the students showed a significant difference, depending on snack purchase attitude(p<.001), and the lower the snack purchase attitude was, the less the students checked up snack expression. The reason why students checked up nutrition labeling a significant difference, depending on gender, snack expense and snack purchase attitude(p<.001). 'Weight management' was the highest. The recognition in the necessity of nutrition expression(p<.001) and the necessity of food/ nutrition education and publicity(p<.01) showed significant difference.

A Study on Job Stress and Eating Behavior and Habits of Dental Hygienists (치과위생사의 직무스트레스와 식행동 및 식습관에 관한 연구)

  • Study the effect of stress factors and increases in stress at work on the changes in eating behavior and habits and the influence of these changes on the health of dental hygienists. Use the responses of 273 dental hygienists who work in or around the Seoul area after surveying them by post or face to face. The biggest reason for skipping breakfast was having no time (60.4%) and the most desired change in eating habits was over eating (33.0%) while 51.6% responded that they over ate or binge ate due to stress. The largest stress factor was work load 39.6% and subjects responded that after stress the amount of food consumed increased very much for 12.1%, very for 49.8%, indicating increased food consumption than usual. The group with the most job stress had a high level of self stress awareness (p<0.001), nervousness (p<0.01), back pains (p<0.001), optical fatigue (p<0.01), headache (p<0.01) and indigestion (p<0.01). The higher the job stress, the poorer the eating behavior was (p<0.01) and job stress was high for dental hygienists working in dental clinics with less than three dental hygienists (p<0.05). Low eating behavior scores could be seen in groups that took 4 night shifts per week (p<0.05). Job stress scores for high for groups with no break time during work (p<0.001) and these groups showed low eating behavior scores (p<0.01). Furthermore, if high levels of self stress awareness was present, job stress was very high (p<0.001) and eating behavior scores were the lowest (p<0.05). Job stress of dental hygienists impede the eating behavior and habits therefore has a negative influence on their health. There is a need for more efforts to solve this problem and thus maintain the health of dental hygienists.

Quality of Life after Esophageal Surgery for Esophageal Surgery (식도암 환자의 수술 후 삶의 질에 관한 연구)

  • Background: We study the QOL (quality of life) & functional improvement in patients underwent esophageal surgery for cancer by the viewpoint of the patient and would like make the guideline of recovery course. Material and Method: Between Dec. 1996$\sim$Aug. 2002, 250 patients were operated and 57 patients was enable interview, didn't have evidence of recurrence & survived more than 1 year postoperatively at Asan Medical Center. Questionnaire made by direct or telephone interview & include diet habitus, change of body weight, G-E (gastroesophageal) reflux, dumping symptom, change of daily life. Result: There were 53 men (93%), 4 women (7%) with mean age of $62.05{\pm}8.7$ (range: $37{\sim}94$). Operation method was Ivor Lewis operation in 43 case (75.4%), Esophagocolojejunostomy 4 case (7.1%), Mckeown operation 10 case (17.5%). In Diet habitus, 55 patients (96.5%) ate more than three times in a day with mean diet frequency was 3.5 times/day, 51 patients (89.5%) have been ate solid, regular diet, 5 patients (8.8%) enable to eat liquid diet. To compare with preoperative state, 32 patients (56.9%) had a diet speed more than 80%, 28 patients (39.1%) had a diet amount more than 80%. 32 patients (56.9%) had a little change of body weight within a 10%, 25 patients (43%) had a improvement rather than preoperative state. In G-E reflux, 4 patients (7%) had a reflux after every diet, 27 patients (47.4%) had a little reflux after diet. In dumping symptom. 7 patients (12.3%) had a diarrhea after meal. 38 patients (66.6%) had a normal activity 19 patients (33.3%) had a decreased activity. At present state, majority (53 patient-93%) of patient were satisfactory to the operation result, in spite of discomfort from time to time. In the emotional status, 50 patients (88%) had a well sleeping without disturbance. 65% of patients were comfortable in the psychology state. 39% of patients had a libido. Compare with their median age (63 y), it's a normal varient. Conclusion: QOL in patients underwent esophageal surgery for esophageal cancer nearly recovery to preoperative state.

A Study on Eating Habits of Elementary School Students and the Perception on the Nutrition Education in Curriculum (초등학생의 식습관 실태 및 학교 교육과정에서의 영양교육에 대한 인식)

  • The purpose of this was to present the efficient directions of nutrition education for elementary school children. We examined the problems of eating habits. nutrition knowledge, and perception and expectations on nutrition education of elementary school children in school. This study was carried out using a self-administered questionnaire and subjects were 562 elementary school children in Gyeonggi Province. All data in this research was analyzed through SAS program, and the frequency$(\%)$ and the $mean{\pm}S.D.$ on each question were calculated. Data for each group was analyzed according to sex and the difference among the groups were treated for significance by using chi-square test and Student t-test. About $87.6\%$ of the children have a meal over three times a day, and $76.7\%$ answered that they ate at a certain time regularly everyday. Only $69.6\%$ of subjects said that they ate breakfast everyday, showing very high levels of skipping breakfast. The most common frequency of eating snacks was 'once a day' in both sexes(male $52.2\%$, female $48.6\%$). In the perception on the eating habits, $69.3\%$ of children recognized problems on dieting habits, such as unbalanced diet. irregular eating time, and overeating. The perceived and correct knowledge of nutrition were $99.5\%$ and $86.9\%$, respectively. Most of the children$(99.1\%)$ acknowledged that nutrition education need to be carried out in school. And children want to deeply deal with 'cooking', 'growth and nutrition', 'good eating habits', 'nutrition and disease', These results indicated that elementary school children tended to have undesirable eating behaviors, but the rate of children who recognize the importance and the needs of nutrition education in school was high. Therefore, their parents and teachers need to perform continuous education through a curriculum and life instruction so that students have healthy habits by considering what the problems of nutrition habits are, as the elementary students considerably recognize problems of their own dietary habits and needs of nutrition education.

Using Focus Group Interviews to Assess Food Behavior and Needs of Nutrition Education for Female University Students

  • In this study, focus group interviews were used to investigate female university students' eating behavior, factors related to eating behavior, information sources for nutrition, and formats for nutrition education. Thirty-six students participated in one of five focus groups during December 1998 in Seoul. Focus group discussions were video, audio-taped, transcribed and analyzed by major themes. Results showed that subjects have undesirable eating behaviors, such s eating irregular meals and skipping meals. These behaviors are caused by a lack of time, habit, or for the purpose of losing weight. The students tended to have unbalanced diets and frequently ate out. They had a large amount for dinner and frequently snaked when stressed or had an empty stomach. Most of them were interested in weight control and had attempted to lose weight, but they did not participate in regular exercise. The most frequently used source for nutrition information was the mass media, but much nutrition information was based on what they learned from home economics class during middle to high school. They received more support from mothers, elder sisters, and friends for eating behaviors, such s lowering caloric intake and losing weight. In nutrition education, they wanted to learns behaviorla skills to adopt healthy behaviors, including meal planning, applying scientific weight control methods, exercise that fit into their lives, and stress management. They also mentioned that nutrition screening and assessment should be a part of nutrition education programs. As a method for nutrition education, subjects preferred an individualized approach to group education. These results provide the qualitative information for developing nutrition education programs which will be implemented for Korean University students.

A Study on Dietary Behaviors and Food Preference of Elementary School Children in Gyeonggi Area

  • To investigate the dietary behavior and food preference by the obesity index, 524 children (male 265, female 259) from 4 elementary schools in Gyeonggi area participated in this study. The overweight group included more boys (52.5%) than girls (47.5%). The overweight group had significantly higher values in height, weight, Obesity index (OI), Body mass index (BMI), and Rohrer index (RI) than the underweight or normal weight groups. The majority (43.4%) of children showed 11-20 minutes of eating time, and boys ate significantly rapidly than girls (p<0.00l). Snack was consumed 2-3 times a day, with the preference principally for ice-cream and cookies. The frequency of eating out was 1-2 times a month, representing 71.4% of subjects, and 73.3% of children preferred Korean style meals, followed by Western, Chinese and Japanese foods. Twigim (frying) was the preferred cooking method for vegetables, fish and meat. The food preference study showed that Ssalbap, Hyunmibap and Boribap were preferred in the rice group. For one-dish foods in the rice group, Jjajangbap, Kimchibokeumbap, Bokeumbap were preferred, with the tendency that boys preferred significantly more Curry rice (p<0.05) and Chickenbap (p<0.01) than girls. The preference for guk, jjigae, and tang group showed that Soegogimiyeokguk, Chamchikimchijjigae were preferred Boys preferred significantly more Samgyetang (p<0.05), Haemultang (p<0.05) and Yukgaejang (p<0.01) than girls, and girls preferred significantly more Kongbijijjigae (p<0.05) than boys. It is considered that organized and continuous nutritional education beginning in childhood, is necessary to for the development and formation of desirable dietary behaviors.

Effects of Food Consumption Monitoring Using Modified Rice Bowls on Food Intake, Satiety Rate, and Eating Rate (모니터링 강화 밥그릇이 섭취량과 포만도 및 섭취속도에 미치는 영향)

  • The study examined dietary intake, satiety rate, and eating rate using rice bowls with an elevated bottom (diet rice bowl) and rice bowls with an elevated bottom and monitoring line (monitoring rice bowl). The monitoring rice bowl was used to help subjects monitor amounts they had eaten as they ate. Eighteen normal weight college female students participated in this study once a week for 2 weeks. Three hundred grams of fried rice in a diet rice bowl (1st week), and 300 g of fried rice in a monitoring rice bowl were served to the participants over 2 consecutive weeks. After each lunch, dietary intake, satiety rate, and eating rate were measured. The consumption amount of fried rice was 261.6 g in the diet rice bowl group, and 264.8 g in the monitoring rice bowl group. There was no significant difference in fried rice intake between the two groups. The satiety rate of fried rice in the monitoring rice bowl group was significantly higher than that of the diet rice bowl group after 1 hour and 2 hours (P<0.05). The eating rate of the diet rice bowl group (21.3 g/min) was significantly faster than that of the monitoring rice bowl group (18.7 g/min) (P<0.05). This result shows that food consumption monitoring can affect not only eating rate but also the subjective feelings of satiety after meal eating. Although more study is needed, these data suggest consumption monitoring in a rice bowl may help to control obesity and weight.

Nutrition Care of Diet - refusal Patients having Difficulties in Adapting to Hospital Diet (병원식사 부적응으로 인한 식사 거부 환자의 영양관리)

  • The purpose of this study was to produce proper nutrition and foodservice through positive intervention for diet-refusal patients who has difficulties in adaptation to hospital diet, and to contribute to hospital management with the focus of fast recovery. The survey was conducted using questionnaires between July 18 and August 17, 2000. The subjects were consisted of 24 diet-refusal patients who were hospitalized in St. Mary's Hospital except the patients hospitalized for the purpose of operation or pre-therapy tests. Also chart reviews were conducted. The statistical analysis of data was done by SAS/win 6.11 package to determine descriptive analysis and paired t-test and Pearson's correlation. The summary of study results is as follows : 1. Most of the subjects was receiving chemotherapy. The leading place for offering private food was from patient's home. Subjects worried about delayed recovery from illness due to nutritional problems caused by extreme fasting. The problems were in order of anorexia, nausea and vomiting during therapy process. 52.4% of subjects ate hospital diet after positive intervention. 2. Major reasons of hospital diet-refusal patients' dissatisfaction were in order of expenses, dissatisfaction, serum total protein levels were significantly lower(p<.05). 3. Serum Alb(p<.05), Hb(p<.05), Hct(p<.05) and TLC(p<.001) levels showed significantly negative correlations with fasting duration. With these results, it is concluded that a major cause of malnutrition among patients is to last fasting.

IEEE 1500 Wrapper and Test Control for Low-Cost SoC Test (저비용 SoC 테스트를 위한 IEEE 1500 래퍼 및 테스트 제어)

  • This paper introduces design-for-test (DFT) techniques for low-cost system-on-chip (SoC) test. We present a Scan-Test method that controls IEEE 1500 wrapper thorough IEEE 1149.1 SoC TAP (Test Access Port) and design an at-speed test clock generator for delay fault test. Test cost can be reduced by using small number of test interface pins and on-chip test clock generator because we can use low-price automated test equipments (ATE). Experimental results evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method and show that the delay fault test of different cores running at different clocks test can be simultaneously achieved.

A Survey of Food and Nutrient Intakes in Female College Students (여대생의 식품 및 영양소 섭취량 조사)

  • Purpose: The study was done to investigate Food and Nutrient Intakes of female college students and define differences between teen-age groups and women in their twenties. Method: The subjects of this study were 821 female college students. They were eighteen to twenty nine years old. Nutrient intakes were measured by the Moon, S. J. Scale (1980). Data was collected from June 13 to June, 27. Data was analyzed with the SPSS program by Chi-test, t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Result: Female college students' mean intake of calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates were $1560.7{\pm}367.71kcal,\;62.0{\pm}19.03g,\;33.1{\pm}9.85g,\;and\;253.7{\pm}57.52g$ respectively. Their mean intake of calcium, phosphorus and iron were $592.9{\pm}221.82mg,\;918.2{\pm}284.24mg\;and\;13.7{\pm}4.50mg$ respectively. Intake of calories, calcium, iron and vitamine B1 were below their Percent of Recommended Intake. Nutrient intakes showed a significant difference between age groups. Teen-age female college students had more nutrient intakes than the women in their twenties. In addition, there was a difference in food consumption behaviors between the teen-age group and the twenty-something group. Conclusion: The nutrient intake of female college students changed by age. Many teen-age female college students ate breakfast well, thus their intake of calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals such as calcium, phosporus and vitamins was significantly higher than the over twenty years old students. Teen-age female college students like fruits and sugars but over twenty years college students preferred coffee. This study can be useful in directing a dietary consumption status of women to improve nutritional health.
