  • In this experiment the effect of supplemental lighting on the growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. 'Fresh') plants during low radiation period of winter season were investigated in glasshouses using common high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps and newly developed plasma lighting system (PLS) lamps. Plants grown without supplemental lighting were considered as a control. Supplemental lighting was provided from November 20th, 2015 to March 15th, 2016 to ensure 14-hour photoperiod (natural+supplemental light), also lamps were operated automatically when the outside sun radiation levels were less than $100W{\cdot}m^{-2}$. Spectral analysis showed that HPS lamp had a discrete spectrum, lacked of the radiation in the 400-550 nm wave band (blue-green light), but had a high output in the orange-red region (550-650 nm). A higher red light output resulted in an increased red to far-red (R/FR) ratio in HPS lamp. PLS had a continuous spectrum and had a peak radiation in green region (490-550 nm). HPS has 12.6% lower output in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) but 12.6% higher output in near infra-red (NIR) spectral regions compared to PLS. Both HPS and PLS lamps emitted very low levels of ultra-violet radiation (300-400 nm). Supplemental lighting both from HPS and PLS lamps increased plant height, leaf number, internode number and dry weight of cucumber plants compared to control. Photosynthetic activity of cucumber plants grown under two supplemental lighting systems was comparable. Number of fruits per cucumber plant (fruit weight per plant) in control, PLS, and HPS plots were 21.2 (2.9 kg), 38.7 (5.5 kg), and 40.4 (5.6 kg), respectively, thereby increasing yield by 1.8-1.9 times in comparison with control. An analysis of the economic feasibility of supplemental lighting in cucumber cultivation showed that considering lamp installation and electricity costs the income from supplemental lighting increased by 37% and 62% for PLS and HPS lamps, respectively.

  • Courtyard is evolving from the conventional one element of a building far beyond into independent peremeter of urban architecture, of which function has been darmatically upgraded from embedded traditional air fluiding, nutural lighting system into where full fledged function can be experienced so much as your imagimation reaches taking major social responsibility such as intact offline social networking which links people from neighbors, inter / extra buiding openness which allow people can communicate among othewise between themselves and artificial natural environmental emelents supplier where people resort to relaxation and natural healing. Roles of courtyard has been by far streatched out into nearby natural healing space where people can shake off their unavoidable stresses from the modern life relaxing themselves looking at the sky otherwise observe natural surroundigns such as plants, flowers and waters. Thanks to hereonto mentioned its merits, Courtyard building is widely used and seen as a center of modern urban design in residence, public bilding and urban planned buildings. Courtyard biulding is nowadays boasting their morphological diversity brought out from lots of topological variation, type variants, cross section and inter relationship with the other neighboring spaces. Hence, hereby I have been studied how above mentioned three major peremeters of courtyard has been upgraded in modern architecture comparing the period from 1960 to 1990 and the period starting from 1991.

  • Large glazed surfaces and windows become common features in modern buildings. The spread of these features was influenced by the dependence of designers on mechanical and artificial systems to provide occupants with thermal and visual comfort. Countries with hot summer and cold winter conditions, like Jordan, require maximum shading from solar radiation in summer, and maximum exposure in winter to reduce cooling and heating loads respectively. The current research aims at designing optimized double-positioned external shading device systems that help to reduce energy consumption in buildings and provide thermal and visual comfort during both hot and cold seasons. Using energy plus, a whole building energy simulation program, and radiance, Lighting Simulation Tool, with DesignBuilder interface, a series of computer simulations for energy consumption and daylighting performance were conducted for offices with south, east, or west windows. The research was based on comparison to determine the best fit characteristics for two positions of adjustable horizontal louvers on south facade or vertical fins on east and west facades for summer and winter conditions. The adjustable shading systems can be applied for new or retrofitted office or housing buildings. The optimized shading devices for summer and winter positions helped to reduce the net annual energy consumption compared to a base case space with no shading device or with curtains and compared to fix shading devices.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of light quality on evapotranspiration and graft-taking characteristics of watermelon grafted seedlings using blue, red and far-red light-emitting diodes (LED). At initial stage of graft-taking, blue light increased the evapotranspiration rate (EVTR) of grafted seedlings as compared to effects of red and far-red on EVTR of grafted seedlings. Grafted seedlings graft-taken under red and blue LED showed the high graft-taking of 100% and 96%, respectively. However, grafted seedlings graft-taken under far-red LED showed the graft-taking of 80% and survival of 60% with low seedlings quality after hardening. The stem of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was elongated but blue light suppressed the stem elongation. The leaf area of grafted seedlings graft-taken under red light was increased. It is concluded that the effect of light quality using LED on graft-taking of watermelon grafted seedlings was significantly recognized. Considering the duration of quality of grafted seedlings graft-taken under artificial lighting, LED could be used as an effective lighting sources to validate the continuance of seedling quality.
