  • The design of avionic embedded systems requires high-dependability. In this paper, we studied the dependability of the triple modular redundancy (TMR) hardware for highly reliable aviation embedded system. In order to evaluate the dependability of the base ARM processor and the TMR ARM processor, we developed the simulation model of the reduced ARM and TMR ARM processors and performed the simulation fault injection for the analysis of the dependability of the two targets. In the fault injection experiments, we calculated the error recovery rate of the two the processor models. From the experimental results, we could confirm that the reliability of the TMR ARM processor was greater than the single ARM processor by ten times in some cases.

  • Despite its low cost, ARM is widely used in smartphones, digital cameras, home network devices, and wireless technologies because of its low power consumption and reliable performance. The domestic memory semiconductor design technology is in the world's highest level, but that of the processor is far less than that, which results in the technology unbalance between the memory and the processor. When designing a processor, exception and interrupt capabilities are requisite, but this is often omitted in the research stage. However, exception processing and interrupts must be included in order for the processor to function fully. In this paper, we design a 32-bit ARMv4 family of processors with exception handling and interrupts using VHDL and verify with ModelSim. As a result, ARM's exception and interrupts are successfully performed.

  • Recently ARM processor's processing power has been increasing rapidly as it has been applied to consumer electronics products. Because of its computing power and low power consumption, it is used to various embedded systems.( including vision processing systems.) Embedded linux that provides well-made platform and GUI is also a powerful tool for ARM based embedded systems. So short period to develop is one of major advantages to the ARM based embedded system. However, for real-time date processing applications such as an image processing system, ARM needs additional equipments such as FPGA that is suitable to parallel processing applications. In this paper, we developed an embedded system using ARM processor and FPGA. FPGA takes time consuming image preprocessing and numerical algorithms needs floating point arithmetic and user interface are implemented using the ARM processor. Overall processing speed of the system is 60 frames/sec of VGA images.

  • This paper addresses issues associated with the real-time implementation of a wideband speech codec such as ITU-T G. 729. 1 on an ARM processor in order to provide an improved voice quality of a VoWiFi service. The real-time implementation features in optimizing the C-source code of G.729. 1 and replacing several parts of the codec algorithm with faster ones. The performance of the implementation is measured by the CPU time spent for G.729.1 on the ARM926EJ processor that is used for a VoWiFi phone. It is shown from the experiments that the G.729.1 codec works in real-time with better voice quality than G 729 codec that is conventionally used for VoIP or VoWiFi phones.

  • Domestically, we are capable of designing high-end memory semiconductors, but not in processors, resulting in unbalance. Using Vivado as a development enivronment and implementing the processor on a Xilinx FPGA reduces time and cost dramatically. In this paper, the popular language VHDL which is widely used in Europe, universities, and research centers around the world for the digital system design is used for designing a pipelined 32-bit ARM processor, implemented on FPGA and verified by Integrated Logic Analyzer. As a result, the ARM processor implemented on FPGA could execute ARM instructions successfully.

  • The technology using ARM TrustZone draws attention as a new embedded virtualization approach. The ARM TrustZone defines two virtual execution environment, the secure world and the normal world. In such an environment, the inter-world communication is important to extend function of software. However, the current monitor software does not sufficiently support the inter-world communication. This paper presents a new inter guestOS communication scheme, for each world, for the ARM TrustZone virtualization. The proposed communication scheme supports bidirectional inter-world communication for single core and multicore environment. In this paper, It is implemented on a NVIDIA Tegra3 processor based on the ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore and it showed a bandwidth of 30MB/s.

  • In this paper, we propose an real-time implementation of JPEG2000 codec on the ARM9 processor. The implemented codec is designed to separate control codes from data management codes in order to use effectively the system resources such as processor and memory. Especially, in embedded situations like cellular phones it is very important to provide good services using limited processor and internal memory. Since ARM9 series processors do not provide floating-point, large amount of computational time is required to perform the operation which needs highly repetitive floating-point computations like DWT(discrete wavelet transform). The proposed codec was programed using fixed-point to overcome this weakness. Also code optimization considering cache memory was applied to further improve the computational speed.

  • In this study, we have developed the resistive leakage current detecting and tripping circuit breaker based on a 32bit ARM processor. The developed leakage circuit breaker can be operated in a desired trip threshold within 0.03 seconds as specified in KS C 4613. This resistive leakage current breaker is expected to be applicable as a circuit breake for prevention of electric fires and electric shock in smart distribution panel.

  • In this paper, we present a coprocessor that can operate with ARM microprocessors. The coprocessor supports IEEE 754 standard single- and double-precision binary floating point arithmetic operations. The design objective is to achieve minimum-area, low-power and acceleration of processing power of ARM microprocessors. The instruction set is compatible with ARM7500FE. The coprocessor is written in verilog HDL and synthesized by the SYNOPSYS Design Compiler. The gate count is 38,115 and critical path delay is 9.52ns.
