In this study, an extension instruction set for high-speed operation of the ARIA block cipher algorithm on RISC-V processor is added to support high-speed cryptographic operation on low performance IoT devices. We propose the efficient ARIA cryptographic instruction set which runs on a conventional 32-bit processor. Compared to the existing software cryptographic operation, there is a significant performance improvement with proposed instruction set.

This paper presented a hardware implementation of ARIA, which is a Korean standard l28-bit block cryptography algorithm. In this work, ARIA was designed technology-independently for application such as ASIC or core-based designs. ARIA algorithm was fitted in FPGA without additional components of hardware or software. It was confirmed that the rate of resource usage is about 19% in Altera EPXAl0F1020CI and the resulting design operates stably in a clock frequency of 36.35MHz, whose encryption/decryption rate was 310.3Mbps. Consequently, the proposed hardware implementation of ARIA is expected to have a lot of application fields which need high speed process such as electronic commerce, mobile communication, network security and the fields requiring lots of data storing where many users need processing large amount of data simultaneously.
Telemetry system is a communication system that measures and transmits various signals in the aircraft to the ground for collecting and monitoring flight data during the development of unmanned air vehicle and satellite launch vehicles. With the recent development of wireless communication technology, it is becoming important to apply encryption of telemetry system to prepare with security threats that may occur during flight data transmission. In this paper, we suggested and implemented the application method of ARIA-256, Korean standard encryption algorithm, to apply encryption to telemetry system. In consideration of the block error propagation and the telemetry frame characteristics, frame is encrypted using the CTR mode and can apply the Reed-solomon codes recommended by CCSDS. ARIA algorithm and cipher frame are implemented in FPGA, and simulation and hardware verification system confirmed continuous frames encryption.

An integrated cryptographic processor that efficiently integrates ARIA, AES block ciphers and Whirlpool hash function into a single hardware architecture is described. Based on the algorithm characteristics of ARIA, AES, and Whirlpool, we optimized the design so that the hardware resources of the substitution layer and the diffusion layer were shared. The round block was designed to operate in a time-division manner for the round transformation and the round key expansion of the Whirlpool hash, resulting in a lightweight hardware implementation. The hardware operation of the integrated ARIA-AES-Whirlpool crypto-processor was verified by Virtex5 FPGA implementation, and it occupied 68,531 gate equivalents (GEs) with a 0.18um CMOS cell library. When operating at 80 MHz clock frequency, it was estimated that the throughputs of ARIA, AES block ciphers, and Whirlpool hash were 602~787 Mbps, 682~930 Mbps, and 512 Mbps, respectively.

The symmetric key encryption algorithms, such as the AES or the ARIA, generate round keys by the key expansion mechanism. While the algorithm is executed, key expansion mechanism emits information about the secret key by the power consumption. The vulnerability exists that can reduce significantly the candidate of the secret key by the simple power analysis attack using a small number of the power traces. Therefore, we'll have to study about the attack and the countermeasure to prevent information leakage. While a simple power analysis attack on the AES key expansion has been studied since 2002, ARIA is insufficient. This paper presents a simple power analysis attack on 8-bit implementations of the ARIA-128 key expansion. The presented attack efficiently utilizes this information leakage to substantially reduce the key space that needs to be considered in a brute-force search for the secret key. We show that ARIA is vulnerable to a SPA attack based on hamming weight leakage.
This paper describes a lightweight implementation of a cryptographic processor supporting GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) authenticated encryption (AE) that is based on the two block cipher algorithms of ARIA and AES. It also provides five modes of operation (ECB, CBC, OFB, CFB, CTR) for confidentiality as well as the key lengths of 128-bit and 256-bit. The ARIA and AES are integrated into a single hardware structure, which is based on their algorithm characteristics, and a $128{\times}12-b$ partially parallel GF (Galois field) multiplier is adopted to efficiently perform concurrent processing of CTR encryption and GHASH operation to achieve overall performance optimization. The hardware operation of the ARIA/AES-GCM AE processor was verified by FPGA implementation, and it occupied 60,800 gate equivalents (GEs) with a 180 nm CMOS cell library. The estimated throughput with the maximum clock frequency of 95 MHz are 1,105 Mbps and 810 Mbps in AES mode, 935 Mbps and 715 Mbps in ARIA mode, and 138~184 Mbps in GCM AE mode according to the key length.

In the recent years, power attacks were widely investigated, and so various countermeasures have been proposed. In the case of block ciphers, masking methods that blind the intermediate results in the algorithm computations(encryption, decryption, and key-schedule) are well-known. Applications of masking methods are able to vary in different block ciphers, therefore suitable masking methods about each ciphers have been researched. Existed methods of ARIA have many revisions of mask value. And because existed masking methods pay no regard for key schedule, secret information can be exposed. In the case of ARIA, this problem is more serious than different block ciphers. Therefore we proposes an efficient masking scheme of ARIA including the key-schedule. Our method reduces time-complexity of ARIA encryption, and solve table-size problem of the general ARIA masking scheme from 256*8 byte to 256*6 byte.

Block cipher ARIA was first proposed by some South Korean experts in 2003, and later, it was established as a Korean Standard block cipher algorithm by Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. In this paper, we focus on the security evaluation of ARIA block cipher against the recent zero-correlation linear cryptanalysis. In addition, Partial-sum technique and FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) technique are used to speed up the cryptanalysis, respectively. We first introduce some 4-round linear approximations of ARIA with zero-correlation, and then present some key-recovery attacks on 6/7-round ARIA-128/256 with the Partial-sum technique and FFT technique. The key-recovery attack with Partial-sum technique on 6-round ARIA-128 needs $2^{123.6}$ known plaintexts (KPs), $2^{121}$ encryptions and $2^{90.3}$ bytes memory, and the attack with FFT technique requires $2^{124.1}$ KPs, $2^{121.5}$ encryptions and $2^{90.3}$ bytes memory. Moreover, applying Partial-sum technique, we can attack 7-round ARIA-256 with $2^{124.6}$ KPs, $2^{203.5}$ encryptions and $2^{152}$ bytes memory and 7-round ARIA-256 employing FFT technique, requires $2^{124.7}$ KPs, $2^{209.5}$ encryptions and $2^{152}$ bytes memory. Our results are the first zero-correlation linear cryptanalysis results on ARIA.

This paper describes a design of crypto-processor that supports multiple block cipher algorithms of PRESENT, ARIA, and AES. The crypto-processor integrates three cores that are PRmo (PRESENT with mode of operation), AR_AS (ARIA_AES), and AES-16b. The PRmo core implementing 64-bit block cipher PRESENT supports key length 80-bit and 128-bit, and four modes of operation including ECB, CBC, OFB, and CTR. The AR_AS core supporting key length 128-bit and 256-bit integrates two 128-bit block ciphers ARIA and AES into a single data-path by utilizing resource sharing technique. The AES-16b core supporting key length 128-bit implements AES with a reduced data-path of 16-bit for minimizing hardware. Each crypto-core contains its own on-the-fly key scheduler, and consecutive blocks of plaintext/ciphertext can be processed without reloading key. The crypto-processor was verified by FPGA implementation. The crypto-processor implemented with a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS cell library occupies 54,500 gate equivalents (GEs), and it can operate with 55 MHz clock frequency.
