  • The occurrence of Fusarium wilt in strawberry fields in Korea was assessed from 2001 to 2003. Fusarium wilt was found from June to August in nursery beds, from September to October after planting in production beds, and from January to March during harvesting period. The symptoms were root rots, discolored vascular tissue in the crown and deformation and yellowing of central leaflets. The disease occurred in up to 30% of plants in 37 of 214 fields surveyed. Fusarium wilt occurred from cvs. ‘Dochiodome’, ‘Maehyang’, ‘Redpearl’, ‘Samaberry ’ and ‘Akihime’ and more severe from cvs. ‘Samaberry’, ‘Maehyang’ and ‘Dochiodome’. Infested soils had high salt concentrations, high nitrogen, phosphate concentrations and low pH. The results of pathogenicity test showed that Fo47 and Fo79 isolated from cvs. ‘Dochiodome’ and ‘Samaberry’ were strong pathogenic to all of four cultivars, and ‘Dochiodome’, ‘Redpearl’, ‘Maehyang’ were relatively susceptible to the all isolates.

  • In this paper we investigate the boundedness character of the positive solutions of the rational difference equation of the form $$x_{n+1}=\frac{a_0+{{\sum}^k_{j=1}}a_jx_{n-j+1}}{b_0+{{\sum}^k_{j=1}}b_jx_{n-j+1}},\;\;n=0,\;1,...$$ where $k{\in}N,\;and\;a_j,b_j,\;j=0,\;1,...,\;k $, are nonnegative numbers such that $b_0+{{\sum}^k_{j=1}}b_jx_{n-j+1}>0$ for every $n{\in}N{\cup}\{0\}$. In passing we confirm several conjectures recently posed in the paper: E. Camouzis, G. Ladas and E. P. Quinn, On third order rational difference equations(part 6), J. Differ. • Recent studies have described various microorganisms that can degrade PAH, however, there are currently limited methods available to screen for PAH-degrading microorganisms. To screen for PAH-degrading microorganisms, a sublimation method (Alley, Jeremy F. and Lewis R. Brown. 2000. Appl. Environ. Microbiol. 66, 439-442) was modified to produce a simple screening system. In our results, there were several bacterial species capable of pyrene degradation including genera, Coryenbacterium, Gordonia, Rhodococcus, and Streptomyces, which have been screened from 350 bacterial isolates of commercial gasoline and oil-spilled sediment by the sublimation method. The main advantage of this method is that it (i) safely deposits an even, thin and visible layer of PAH onto the agar surface without the use of solvents and (ii) the quantity of PAH sublimed onto the agar can be easily controlled. Overall, this sublimation method may be an effective and simple technique to screen for PAH-degrading microorganisms.

  • This study was conducted to estimate effects of by-products of medical herbs replacing rice straw on in vitro fermentation characteristics. Each trial was composed of five treatments including medical herbs : rice straw (%) = 20 : 80 (T1), 40 : 60 (T2), 50 : 50 (T3), 100 : 0 (T4) and the control. Each treatment had eight fermentation times (3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hours) with three replications. The gas production and DM degradation were significantly (P<0.05) increased by supplementation, especially T4, during the whole fermentation periods. Methane production increased along with addition of by-products similar to the gas production and DM degradation. The pH values ranged from 5.39 to 6.80 and were significantly (P<0.05) decreased by supplementation of by-products of medical herbs. Microbial growth rates reached the peak at between 36 and 48h, thereafter tended to decrease. Although there were no significant differences in the enzyme activities, there was a tendency of increase in T4 treatment. From above results, the replacement levels, particularly 100% replacement of rice straw by by-products of medical herbs, resulted in improving the in vitro fermentation characteristics such as increasing gas production, microbial growth and DM degradation. Also it may help digestion by increasing enzyme activities.

  • In 2001, Choi, Harsh & Rathie [Some summation formulas for the Appell's function $F_1$. East Asian Math. J. 17 (2001), 233-237] have obtained 11 results for the Appell's function $F_1$ with the help of Gauss's summation theorem and generalized Kummer's summation theorem. We aim at presenting 22 more results for $F_1$ with the help of the generalized Gauss's second summation theorem and generalized Bailey's theorem obtained by Lavoie, Grondin & Rathie [Generalizations of Whipple's theorem on the sum of a $_3F_2$. J. Comput. Appl. Math. 72 (1996), 293-300]. Two interesting (presumably) new special cases of our results for $F_1$ are also explicitly pointed out.

  • Recently Salkuyeh and Rahimian in (Comput. Math. Appl. 74 (2017) 2940-2949) proposed a modification of the generalized shift-splitting (MGSS) method for solving singular saddle point problems. In this paper, we present the spectral analysis of the MGSS preconditioner when it is applied to precondition the singular saddle point problems with the (1, 1) block being symmetric. Some eigenvalue bounds for the spectrum of the preconditioned matrix are given. We show that all the real eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix are in a positive interval and all nonzero eigenvalues having nonzero imaginary part are contained in an intersection of two circles.

  • Some strong convergence theorems of explicit iteration scheme for asymptotically nonexpansive semi-groups in Banach spaces are established. The results presented in this paper extend and improve some recent results in [T. Suzuki. On strong convergence to common fixed points of nonexpansive semigroups in Hilbert spaces, Proc. Amer. Math. • We numerically investigate by the finite-difference time-domain method the effects of surface termination on directional emission exiting a photonic crystal waveguide. The directed power and far-field beam profile for the original proposal [E. Moreno et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 121402 (2004)] and its enhancement [S. K. Morrison et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 86, 081110 (2005)] are computed for different values of some important parameters. We find another surface termination condition with a positive surface displacement in the structure of the original proposal which has a negative surface displacement. Our surface termination is more effective than the original structure, and nearly as effective as the termination for the enhancement, for directional emission. Besides, our termination is simpler than that for the enhancement. We confirm the effectiveness of directional emission from our termination in its far-field beam profile, radiation intensity distribution, and additionally the wave-vector space representation by the Fourier analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to prove strong convergence theorems for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of a weak relatively nonexpansive mapping and the set of solutions of the variational inequality for an inverse-strongly-monotone mapping by a new hybrid method in a Banach space. We shall give an example which is weak relatively nonexpansive mapping but not relatively nonexpansive mapping in Banach space $l^2$. Our results improve and extend the corresponding results announced by Ying Liu[Ying Liu, Strong convergence theorem for relatively nonexpansive mapping and inverse-strongly-monotone mapping in a Banach space, Appl. Math. Mech. -Engl. Ed. 30(7)(2009), 925-932] and some others.

  • GIS was appl ied for analysis of the potfnt ial degree of regional geologic hazard, expecially landslide, in the suburb of Seoul city. Potential elements causing a landslide are geology, slope geometry, groundwater, soil property, rainfall and vegetation etc. These factors were incorporated through GIS in order to predict the potential hazards, and to produce a regional geologic hazard map in the study area, For this study, ARC/INFO and ERDAS systems were used in SUN4-390 workstation.
