Structural Design of an Upper Control Arm, Considering Static Strength (정강도를 고려한 상부 컨트롤 암의 구조설계)

  • This study proposes a structural design method for the upper control arm installed at the rear side of a SUV. The weight of control arm can be reduced by applying the design and material technologies. In this research, the former includes optimization technology, and the latter the technologies for selecting aluminum as a steel-substitute material. Strength assessment is the most important design criterion in the structural design of a control arm. At the proto design stage of a new control arm, FE (finite element) analysis is often utilized to predict its strength. This study considers the static strength in the optimization process. The inertia relief method for FE analysis is utilized to simulate the static loading conditions. According to the classification of structural optimization, the structural design of a control arm is included in the category of shape optimization. In this study, the kriging interpolation method is adopted to obtain the minimum weight satisfying the strength constraint. Optimum designs are obtained by ANSYS WORKBENCH and the in-house program, EXCEL-kriging program. The optimum results determined from the in-house program are compared with those of ANSYS WORKBENCH.

Detecting and predicting the crude oil type inside composite pipes using ECS and ANN

  • The present work develops an expert system for detecting and predicting the crude oil types and properties at normal temperature ${\theta}=25^{\circ}C$, by evaluating the dielectric properties of the fluid transfused inside glass fiber reinforced epoxy (GFRE) composite pipelines, by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) technique, then used the data measurements from ECS to predict the types of the other crude oil transfused inside the pipeline, by designing an efficient artificial neural network (ANN) architecture. The variation in the dielectric signatures are employed to design an electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) with high sensitivity to detect such problem. ECS consists of 12 electrodes mounted on the outer surface of the pipe. A finite element (FE) simulation model is developed to measure the capacitance values and node potential distribution of ECS electrodes by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. Radial Basis neural network (RBNN), structure is applied, trained and tested to predict the finite element (FE) results of crude oil types transfused inside (GFRE) pipe under room temperature using MATLAB neural network toolbox. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an RBNN results, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique.

Warpage Simulation by the CTE mismatch in Blanket Structured Wafer Level 3D packaging

  • In 3D wafer-stacking technology, one of the major issues is wafer warpage. Especially, The important reason of warpage has been known due to CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) mismatch between materials. It was too hard to choose how to make the FE model for blanket structured wafer level 3D packaging, because the thickness of each layer in wafer level 3D packaging was too small (micro meter or nano meter scale) comparing with diameter of wafer (6 or 8 inches). In this study, the FE model using the shell element was selected and simulated by the ANSYS WorkBench to investigate effects of the CTE on the warpage. To verify the FE model, it was compared by experimental results.

Prediction of Shearing Die Life for Producing a Retainer using FE Analysis (유한요소해석을 이용한 리테이너 전단 금형 수명예측)

  • In the current study, a method was proposed to quantitatively predict the wear and fatigue life of a shearing die in order to determine an effective replacement period for the die. The shearing die model of a retainer manufacturing process was used for the proposed method of quantitative life prediction. The retainer is produced through shearing steps, such as piercing and notching. The shearing die of the retainer is carefully controlled because the dimensional accuracy of the retainer is critical. The fatigue life for the shearing die was predicted using ANSYS considering S-N curves of STD11 and Gerber’s equation. The wear life for the shearing die was predicted using DEFORM-3D considering the Archard’s wear model. Experimental shearing of the retainer was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for predicting die life. The fatigue failure of the shearing die was macroscopically measured. The wear depth was measured using a 3D coordinate measuring machine. The results showed that the wear and fatigue life in the FE analysis agree well with the experimental results.

Failure Assessment and Strength of Steam Generator Tubes with Wall Thinning (증기발생기 전열관 감육부의 강도 및 손상평가)

  • Steam generator tubes are degraded from wear, stress corrosion cracking, rupture and fatigue and so on. Therefore, the failure assessment of steam generator tube is very important for the integrity of energy plants. In the steam generator tubes, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe degradations such as erosion-corrosion damage and wear due to vibration. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis was performed by FE code ANSYS on steam generator tubes with wall thinning. Also, the four-point bending tests were performed on the wall thinned specimens, and then it was compared with the analysis results. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior from the experiment and FE analysis. Also, it was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the thinned area from FE analysis.

FE and ANN model of ECS to simulate the pipelines suffer from internal corrosion

  • As the study of internal corrosion of pipeline need a large number of experiments as well as long time, so there is a need for new computational technique to expand the spectrum of the results and to save time. The present work represents a new non-destructive evaluation (NDE) technique for detecting the internal corrosion inside pipeline by evaluating the dielectric properties of steel pipe at room temperature by using electrical capacitance sensor (ECS), then predict the effect of pipeline environment temperature (${\theta}$) on the corrosion rates by designing an efficient artificial neural network (ANN) architecture. ECS consists of number of electrodes mounted on the outer surface of pipeline, the sensor shape, electrode configuration, and the number of electrodes that comprise three key elements of two dimensional capacitance sensors are illustrated. The variation in the dielectric signatures was employed to design electrical capacitance sensor (ECS) with high sensitivity to detect such defects. The rules of 24-electrode sensor parameters such as capacitance, capacitance change, and change rate of capacitance are discussed by ANSYS and MATLAB, which are combined to simulate sensor characteristic. A feed-forward neural network (FFNN) structure are applied, trained and tested to predict the finite element (FE) results of corrosion rates under room temperature, and then used the trained FFNN to predict corrosion rates at different temperature using MATLAB neural network toolbox. The FE results are in excellent agreement with an FFNN results, thus validating the accuracy and reliability of the proposed technique and leads to better understanding of the corrosion mechanism under different pipeline environmental temperature.

Numerical investigation on the behavior of SHS steel frames strengthened using CFRP

  • Steel frames are widely used in steel structures. Exiting steel structures may be needed to strengthen for various reasons. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) is one of the materials that are used to strengthen steel structures. Most studies on strengthening steel structures have been done on beams and steel columns. No independent study, to the researcher's knowledge, has studied the effect of CFRP strengthening on steel frames. This study explored the use of CFRP composite on retrofitting square hollow section (SHS) steel frames, using numerical investigations. Ten Finite Element (FE) models, which were strengthened with CFRP sheets, were analyzed under different coverage length, number of layers, and location of CFRP composite. One FE model without strengthening was analyzed as a control FE model to determine the increase of the ultimate load in the strengthened steel frames. ANSYS software was used to analyze the SHS steel frames. The results showed that the coverage length and the number of layers of CFRP composite have a significant effect on increasing the ultimate load of the SHS steel frames. The results also showed that the location of CFRP composite had no similar effect on increasing the ultimate load and the amount of mid span deflection of the SHS steel frames.

Evaluation of Deformation and Strength of Wall Thinne Pipes by Finite Element Analysis (감육배관의 유한요소해석에 의한 변형 및 강도 평가)

  • Fracture behavior and pipe strength are very important to the integrity of energy plants, ocean structures, and so forth. The pipes of energy plants and ocean structures are subject to local wall thinning, resulting from severe erosion-corrosion damage. Recently, the effects of local wall thinning on fracture strength and fracture behavior of piping systems have been the focus of many studies. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis is performed by FE code ANSYS on straight pipes with wall thinning. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior, using FE analysis. Also, the effect of the axial strain on deformations and failure modes was estimated by FE analysis.

Numerical simulation on the square column's strengthening characteristics utilizing the SCC jacketing

  • This research aims to simulate and investigate the efficiency of strengthening damaged concrete columns using concrete jacketing.The numerical program included unjacketed reference column made of ordinary RC concrete had a cross-sectional dimension of (100×100) mm and 560 mm long reinforced concrete. These cores were damaged by loading them with approximately 60% of their actual ultimate load capacities as a service load. Then, column specimens were strengthened by applying two types of self-compacting concrete SCC jacketing, which were 25 and 30 mm thick, on all four sides. Exposed to external loads at different directions vertically and horizontally simulate to the seismic load. The 3D Finite Element (FE) simulation is used to predict of three structural criteria that were selected and evaluated (deflection, stress, cracks). The results show that the failure of the strengthening columns is interesting and corresponds to the characteristics of the cracks formed in the concrete section,which was documented numerically using 3D Finite Element (FE). A significant improvement of deflection has been noted at the values at the top SECTION of columns compared to the reference sample reaching an average of up to 36.6% when using a 25 mm thick SCC-3500 jacket.

CFRP strengthening of continuous RC T-beams at hogging moment zone across the flange

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates are used widely either for repairing or strengthening of existing structures. When CFRP laminates are used for strengthening of RC continuous T-beams in the Hogging Moment Zone (HMZ); above and around the intermediate supports, it is important to study the expected positions of the laminates across the width of the beam flange. Although, it is traditional to consider CFRP laminates added above the beam web, this is not practical since walls and columns are located in such positions in general. This paper examines the effect of changing the positions of CFRP laminates used for the strengthening of the hogging moment zone across the beam flange of two-span-T-section beams. The Finite Element (FE) Package ANSYS is used to create 3-D theoretical models needed for the study. It can be concluded that changing the position of CFRP strengthening across the beam flange, in the hogging moment zone, is effective upon the overall behavior. The best locations are either above the web or at the flange just beside the web, due to the presence of walls and/or columns.
