  • In this paper, an alternative variable structure controller is designed for the point-to-point regulation control of uncertain general linear plants so that the output of plants can be controlled from an arbitrarily given initial point to an arbitrarily given reference point in the state space. By using the error between the steady state value of the output and an arbitrarily given reference point and those integral, a transformed integral sliding surface is defined, in advance, as the surface from an initial state to an arbitrarily given reference point without the reaching phase problems. A corresponding control input is suggested to satisfy the existence condition of the sliding mode on the preselected transformed integral sliding surface against matched uncertainties and disturbances. Therefore, the output controlled by the proposed controller is completely robust and identical to that of the preselected transformed integral sliding surface. Through an example, the effectiveness of the suggested controller is verified.

  • The modulation bandwidth of a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is limited by carrier lifetime. Therefore, it is hard to directly modulate an RSOA with high-speed electrical signals. We theorize that an optical filter can act as an optical equalizer, compensating for the narrow bandwidth limitation imposed by the RSOA. By modeling a time-varying RSOA with a modified transfer matrix method (TMM), we simulated 25 Gbps operation of an RSOA with optical filtering effects. We investigated the impact of detuning the center wavelength of the optical filter on the modulation of an RSOA. The numerical results show that it is possible to modulate an RSOA with an optical filtering effect at 25 Gbps without electronic equalization or digital signal processing.

  • Synovial fistula of the ankle joint is an uncommon complication from an ankle sprain. This may likely result in an unhealed wound around the ankle joint due to continuous leakage of joint fluid. However, in the event of an open wound on the lower leg, and not on the joint, it may be difficult to consider synovial fistula as a cause of the open wound. We experienced an interesting case with an unhealed open wound on the lower leg due to a synovial fistula of the ankle joint following an ankle sprain. We obtained good results after a treatment using a self-produced suction drainage device on the unhealed open wound.

  • The aim of this paper is to find an adequate method to study declination in Korean. In previous studies of declination in Korean, maximum and minimum pitch values in an accentual phrase were measured. But this method is inadequate when an accentual phrase is located at the intonational phrase. So in order to exclude the final tone of an intonational phrase, we propose to measure pitch values of the first and second tone in an accentual phrase when the tonal pattern of the accentual phrase is 'LHLH'. In this case, the line that connects every first tone of an accentual phrase is the baseline, and the line that connects every second tone of an accentual phrase is the topline. By a comparison of declination between focused and neutral utterances, we will show that the topline of declination is more direct to the speaker's plan than the baseline.

  • Historically, the en-users' acceptance of the expert systems(ES) have generally been used as a proxy for the ES' implementation success by both practitioners and academicians. However, with regard to bank loan decisions, most loan officers approach the acquisition of an ES with apprehension. In order to overcome this skepticism, more research should focus on the behavioral aspects relate to systems acquisition and usage. This research applied Vroom's(1964) expectancy theory in an effort to predict end-users' motivation to use an ES in a bank loan decision context. Because human behaviors and judgements are nonlinear rather than linear functions, accurately predicting human behavior is very difficult. To increase the prediction power for end-users' motivation to use an ES in a bank loan decision context, this research used an artificial neural network (ANN) model. In this research, an attempt was made to evaluate adequacy of the surrogates by analyzing differences between real bank loan officers and student surrogates in applying expectancy theory to estimate bank loan officers' motivation to use ES in a bank loan decision context.

  • A real $m{\times}n$ matrix A is called an L-matrix if every matrix in its qualitative class has linearly independent rows. Since the number of the sign pattern matrices of the given size is finite, we can list all patterns lexicographically. In [2], a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix to be an L-matrix was given. We presented an algorithm which decides whether the given matrix is an L-matrix or not. In this paper, we develope an algorithm and C-program which will determine whether a given matrix is an L-matrix or not, or an SNS-matrix or not. In addition, we have extended our algorithm to be able to classify sign-pattern matrices, and to find barely L-matrices from a given matrix and to list all $m{\times}n$ L-matrices.

  • This paper deals with a stand-alone wind energy conversion system (WECS) with an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) and voltage and frequency (VF) control feeding three-phase four-wire loads. The reference generator currents are estimated using the instantaneous symmetrical component theory to control the voltage and frequency of an IAG system. A three-leg voltage source converter (VSC) with an isolated star/delta transformer is used as an integrated VSC. An integrated VSC with a battery energy storage system (BESS) is used to control the active and reactive powers of the WECS. The WECS is modeled and simulated in MATLAB using the Simulink and the Sim Power System (SPS) toolboxes. The proposed VF controller functions as a voltage and frequency regulator, a load leveler, a load balancer and a harmonic eliminator in the WECS. A comparison is made on the rating of the VSC with and without ac capacitors connected at the terminals of an IAG. Simulation and test results are presented to verify the control algorithm.

  • This paper introduces an approach to the realization of an ICT-based bridge remote monitoring system that enables real-time monitoring and controlled adjustments for unexpected heavy loads and also for damaging earthquakes or typhoons. In this paper, an integrated bridge remote monitoring system called the "Intelligent Bridge", which consists of a stand-alone monitoring system (SMS) and a web-based Internet monitoring system(IMS), was developed for not only bridge maintenance but also as an application for a para-stressing bridge system. To verify the possibility of controlling the actual structural performance of an "Intelligent Bridge", a model 2-span continuous cable-stayed bridge with adjustable cables was constructed. The experimental results demonstrate that the implemented monitoring system supplies detailed and accurate information about bridge behaviour for further evaluation and diagnosis, and it also opens up prospects for future application of a web-based remote system to actually adjust in-service bridges under field conditions.

  • This paper proposes an efficient collision detection method in the dynamic spatial subdivisions for the MMORPG engine which requires realtime interactions. An octree is a suitable structure for static scenes or terrain processing. An octree spatial subdivision enhances rendering speed of scenes. Current spatial subdivisions tend to be highly optimized for efficient traversal, but are difficult to update quickly for a changing geometry. When an object moves to the outside extent for the spatial subdivisions, the acceleration structure would normally have to be rebuilt. The OSP based on a tree is used to divide dynamically wide outside which is the subject of 3D MMORPG. TBV does not reconstruct all tree nodes of OSP and has reduced rebuilding times by TBV information of a target node. A collision detection is restricted to those objects contained in the visibility range of sight by using the information established in TBV. We applied the HBV and ray tracing for an efficient collision detection.

  • This paper presents a new isolated soft-switching bidirectional buck-boost inverter for fuel cell applications. The buck-boost inverter combines an isolated DC-DC converter with a conventional inverter to implement buck-boost DC-DC and DC-AC conversion. The main switches achieve zero voltage switching and zero current switching by using a novel synchronous switching SVPWM and the volume of the transformer in the forward and fly-back mode is also minimized. This inverter is suitable for wide input voltage applications due to its high efficiency under all conditions. An active clamping circuit reduces the switch's spike voltage and regenerates the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the transformer; therefore, the overall efficiency is improved. This paper presents the operating principle, a theoretical analysis and design guidelines. Simulation and experimental results have validated the characteristics of the buck-boost inverter.
