  • This study aims to suggest an evaluation method of thermal environment using CFD, not an experiment, which is usual in the field. Model train is the newly introduced Mugunghwa train. Since its compartment occupies a large space and chairs and other accessories make it a complicated structure, 3-D calculation might take too much time and effort to make evaluation itself possible. Therefore, we suggest a 2-D model to replace the original 3-D model for averaged temperature and temperature distribution in the cabin.

  • In this paper are presented main power and gasdynamic characteristics of hypersonic test cell of Research Test Center (RTC) of Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM). The distributions of temperature and Mach number at the exit of the aerodynamic nozzle of test cell are received at simulation conditions of flight at Mf=6. Values of available pressure difference and throttling characteristics for various operational modes of test cell, including the loading of working section by Scramjet model without the heating of air at entrance to the aerodynamic nozzle and with the heating of air, are received too.

  • The thermal response of electronic components during infrared reflow soldering is studied by a two-dimensional numerical model. The convective, radiative and conduction heat transfer within the reflow oven as well as within the card assembly are simulated. Parametric study is also performed to determine the thermal response of electronic components to various conditions such as conveyor velocities, exhaust velocities and emissivities. The results of this study can be used in selecting the oven operating conditions to ensure proper solder melting and minimization of thermally induced card assembly stresses.

  • The estimation of reasonable amount of domestic cold water and hot water supplies in apartment houses is very important for the economical design of domestic cold water and hot water supply system which include pumps, boilers, heat exchangers, and various water reservoirs. To suggest the model of predicting reasonable amount of domestic cold water and hot water supplies, residents and actual domestic cold water and hot water consumption have been investigated for 740 apartment houses in Seoul and Bun-Dang, Kyunggi-Do. The model is suggested as a function of exclusive area of the apartment house and results of the model show generally good agreement with published data.

  • The objective of the present study is to develop a model to predict heat and gas flow movement by fire in a tunnel. The model includes component models such as turbulence model, combustion model, fire model, jet fan model, etc. It has been validated using the data from Memorial Tunnel Fire Ventilation Test Program. The predictions are in good quantitative agreement with the experimental data in the far-field region of the tunnel. It should be further investigated to develop models for radiation between surfaces, for composite boundary conditions for conduction and convection, and for vigorous turbulent mixing in a tunnel especially for a large size of fire.

  • A modified low-Re $k-\varepsilon$ model is used for the calculation of drag-reducing turbulent flow by polymer injection in a pipe. With the viscoelastic model, molecular viscosity in the definition of turbulent viscosity is related to elongations viscosity of the solution to account for the effects of drag reduction. Finite volume method is used for the discretization, and power-law scheme is used as a numerical scheme. Computed dimensionless velocity profiles are in good agreements with the experimental data in case of low drag reductions. However, in case of high drag reductions, they deviate largely from the measurements in the central zone of the flow field.

  • Analysis of thermal performance is required for the economic operation of turbine cycle of power plant. We developed corrective model of main feed water flow which is the most important parameter for the precise analysis of turbine cycle performance. Classification model for the identification of feed water flow measurement status was applied to increase the suitability of the corrective model. We used neural network and support vector machine to develop estimation model of main feed water flow with more generalization capability. The estimation model can be used practically to evaluate corrective performance of turbine cycle plant.

  • A two-dimensional immiscible droplet deformation phenomena on moving wall in a channel has been investigated by using lattice Boltzmann method involving two-phase model. The dependence of the deformation of the droplet with different sizes on the contact angle and the velocity of bottom wall has studied. When the bottom wall starts to move, the deformation of the droplet occurs. For the largest bottom wall velocity, eventually, the deformation of the droplet is classified into the three patterns according to the contact angle.

  • An acoustical model for detecting the leak location in a buried gas pipeline has been developed. This model is divided into an experimental model for sound diagnosis, and a theoretical model for sound prediction, which is based on the transfer matrix method, representing the sound pressure and the volume velocity as state variables. The power spectrum is measured by attaching only one microphone to the closed end pipe. It has been shown that the response magnitude of acoustic pressure signals calculated by the acoustical model depends upon the thickness and diameter of a pinhole. The validity for the acoustical model has been verified through a comparison between the measured and calculated results.
