  • The effects of temperature. pH, carbon and nitrogen sources on the growth of Rhizoctonia solani were studied by using five hyphal anastomosis groups(four cultural types, 7 isolates) of the fungus. The ranges of optimum temperature were $20^{\circ}C$ in the AG 2-1, AG 2-2 and AG 4, and $25^{\circ}C$ in the AG 1-IA, AG 1-IB, AG 3, AG 5. The optimum pH for the mycelial growth was 6-7 in the fungus. Glucose in the AG 1-lA, AG 1-IB, AG 2-2, AG 3 and AG 5, sucrose in the AG 2-1 and fructose in the AG 4 were the most effective for the mycelial growth, but glycerine, cellulose and lactose were not effectively utilized as nutrients. $Ca(NO_3)_2$ in the AG 1-IA, AG 1-IB and AG 4, asparagine in the AG 2-1, $KNO_3$ in the AG 2-2 and $NaNO_3$ in the AG 5 were the best nitrogen sources for the mycelial growth, but $NH_4NO_3$ was not easily utilized by the fungus. Nitrate and organic nitrogens for the fungal growth were utilized better than ammonium nitrogen.

  • A total of 2,276 isolates of Rhizoctonia solani obtained from diseased crops of 68 species was classified into anastomosis groups AG-1, AG-2-1, AG-2-2, AG-3, AG-4 and AG-5 by anastomosis test. Among the isolates, 1,091 isolates were identified as AG-1, 326 isolates as AG-2-1, 191 isolates as AG-2-2, 71 isolates as AG-3, 505 isolates as AG-4, and 92 isolates as AG-5. Among the isolates of AG-1, 791 isolates were grouped as cultural type IA, 280 isolates as cultural type IB, and the others as cultural type IC. Among the isolates of AG-2-2, 112 isolates were grouped as cultural type IIIB, and the others as cultural type IV. Cultural types IA, IB and IC of AG-1 were isolated from 7, 26 and 2 species of crops, respectively. AG-2-1 was isolated from 10 species of crops. Cultural types IIIB and IV of AG-2-2 were isolated from 7 and 3 species of crops, respectively. AG-3 was only isolated from Solanum tuberosum. AG-4 was isolated from 43 species of crops, and AG-5 from 13 species of crops. A single anastomosis group was isolated from each of 45 species of crops, but two or more than two anastomosis groups were isolated from each of the other crops. Cultural appearance of the isolates belonging to an anastomosis group or a cultural type was mostly distinct from that belonging to others, although cultural appearances of some anastomosis groups or cultural types were similar to one another. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth of AG-1, AG-2-2, AG-4 and AG-5 ranged from 26 to $30^{\circ}C$, and that of AG-2-1 and AG-3 from 22 to $26^{\circ}C$. Minimum temperature for mycelial growth of AG-2-1 was the lowest as $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$, that of AG-1(IA) and AG-4 was the highest as $10{\sim}11^{\circ}C$, and that of the others ranged from 5 to $10^{\circ}C$. Maximum temperature for mycelial growth of AG-2-2(IIIB) was the highest as $36{\sim}37^{\circ}C$, that of AG-2-1 was the lowest as $29{\sim}30^{\circ}C$, and that of the others ranged from 31 to $36^{\circ}C$. When the mycelial growth rates at $26^{\circ}C$ were compared, AG-1(IC) grew most rapidly, followed by AG-1(IA) and AG-1(IB), and AG-2-1 grew most slowly.

  • With Pb-free solder joints containing Sn-Ag-Cu-based ternary alloys (Sn-1.0 wt.%Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu) and Sn-Ag-Cu-In-based quaternary alloys (Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu-1.0In, Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu-0.4In, Sn-1.2Ag-0.5Cu-0.6In, and Sn-1.2Ag-0.7Cu-0.4In), fracture-mode change, shear strengths, and fracture energies were observed and measured under a high-speed shear test of 500 mm/s. The samples in each composition were prepared with as-reflowed ones or solid-aged ones at $125^{\circ}C$ to 500 h. As a result, it was observed that ductile or quasi-ductile fracture modes occurs in the most of Sn-Ag-Cu-In samples. The happening frequency of a quasi-ductile fracture mode showed that the Sn-Ag-Cu-In joints possessed ductile fracture properties more than that of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu in the high-speed shear condition. Moreover, the Sn-Ag-Cu-In joints presented averagely fracture energies similar to those of Sn-Ag-Cu joints. While maximum values in the fracture energies were measured after the solid aging for 100 h, clear decreases in the fracture energies were observed after the solid aging for 500 h. This result indicated that reliability degradation of the Sn-Ag-Cu-In solder joints might accelerate from about that time.

  • In this study, the photo-deposition method was used to introduce Ag onto the surface of TiO2 to synthesize an Ag-TiO2 composite. The effects of the varying amounts of AgNO3 precursor and annealing time periods on the Ag content in the composites, as well as their antibacterial characteristics under visible light conditions were studied. SEM analysis revealed the spherical morphology of the Ag-TiO2 composite. Compared with TiO2, the Ag particles were too small to be observed. An XPS analysis of the Ag-TiO2 surface confirmed the Ag content and showed the peak intensities for elements such as Ag, Ti, O, C, and Si. The highest Ag content was observed when 33.3 wt.% of AgNO3 and an annealing time of 6 h were employed; this was the optimum annealing time for Ti-Ag-O bonding, in that the lowest number of O bonds and the highest number of Ag bonds were confirmed by XPS analysis. Superior antibacterial properties against Bacillus and Escherichia coli, in addition to the widest inhibition zones were exhibited by the Ag-TiO2 composite with an increased Ag content in a disk diffusion test, the bacterial reduction rate against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli being 99.9%.

  • A laboratory microcosm experiment was conducted to evaluate a major metal uptake route as well as chronic toxic effects of the clam, Macoma balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments. Twenty five clams were exposed to the sediments contaminated with four levels of Ag $Ag(0.01-0.87\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and $Cu(0.75-5.55\mu{mol\;g^{-1})$ for 90 days. AVS (acid volatile sulfide) concentration in the sediments, considered as major factor controlling metal geochemistry and bioavailability, was manipulated to evaluate its effects on Ag and Cu bioaccumulation in M. balthica. Following 90-d exposure, the tissue Ag and Cu in M. balthica increased linearly with the Ag and Cu concentrations in sediments extracted with 1 N HCI (SEM, simultaneously extracted metals with AVS). The bioaccumulation of Ag and Cu in M. balthica was little influenced by difference in [SEM] - [AVS] values, suggesting a minor contribution of pore water metals to bioaccumulation. Tissue Ag and Cu concentrations directly influenced on the clearance rate and glycogen content of the clams. The clams with highest tissue Ag $(1.0\pm{0.2}\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ and Cu concentrations $(2.7\pm{0.3}\;\mu{mol}\;g^{-1})$ had only 18-43% of clearance of the clams exposed to uncontaminated sediments. Similarly, glycogen content of the exposed clams had a inverse relationship with tissue Ag and Cu concentrations. These results suggest that M. balthica exposed to Ag and Cu contaminated sediments accumulates metals largely by ingestion of contaminated sediments and can display chronic effects as reduced clearance rate and glycogen content.

  • Uniform Ag nanoparticles (< 10 nm) were effectively prepared in 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine as a solvent with multiple functions including reduction and stabilization. An Ag-complex such as $Ag_2(ehac)_2(eha)_2$ (ehac = 2-ethylhexylammonium carbamate; eha = 2-ethylhexylamine) was used as an Ag-precursor, whereas the usage of a salt such as $AgNO_3$ showed the formation of Ag nanoparticles in larger and irregular size (30 - 500 nm). The Ag nanoparticles (< 10 nm) prepared by using the Ag-complex could also be effectively stabilized by 1-amino-4-methylpiperazine. Transmission electron micrographs confirmed that the Ag particles were spherical and in the nanometer size.

All corrosion testing was conducted in 1% NaCl solution. The main results are as follows : 1. The corrosion resistence of commercial alloys was decreased in the order of C-1, C-3, C-4, C-2. C-2. 2. The E-1 and E-3 ternary alloys exhibits the higher corrosion resistence than E-2 and E-4 alloys. 3. The cast microstructure of alloys reveals dendrite morphology which shows the significant microsegregation caused by the difference in the diffusion rate between liquid and solid. 4. It is found that the surface corrosion products were mainly AgCl by X-ray diffraction results.

  • Two crystal structures of dehydrated $Ag^+$ and $Rb^+$ exchanged zeolite A, stoichiometries of $Ag_{9}Rb_{3}-A$ (a = 12.278(2)${\AA}$) and $Ag_{10}Rb_{2}-A$ (a = 12.286(2)${\AA}$) per unit cell, have been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction techniques. Their structures were solved and refined in the cubic space group Pm3m at 21(1)$^{\circ}$C. The crystals of $Ag_{10}Rb_{2}-A$ and $Ag_{10}Rb_{2}-A$ were prepared by flow methods using exchanged solution in which mole ratios of AgNO$_3$ and RbNO$_3$ were 1:5 and 1:50, respectively, with the total concentration of 0.05 M. The structures of the dehydrated $Ag_{9}Rb_{3}-A$ and the $Ag_{10}Rb_{2}-A$ were refined to the final error indices, $R_1$ = 0.064 and $R_2$ = 0.060 with 291 reflections, and $R_1$ = 0.063 and $R_2$ = 0.080 with 416 reflections respectively, for which I >3${\sigma}$(I). In both structures, one reduced silver atom per unit cell was found inside the sodalite cavity. It may be present as a hexasilver cluster in 1/6 of the sodalite units or as an isolated Ag atom coordinated to 4 $Ag^+$ ions in each sodalite unit to give $(Ag_5)^{4+}$, symmetry 4 mm. In the structure of dehydrated $Ag_{9}Rb_{3}-A$, 8 $Ag^+$ ions lie on the threefold axis and each is nearly at the center of the 8-rings at the sites of $D_{4h}$ symmetry. In the structure of dehydrated $Ag_{10}Rb_{2}-A$, two crystallographically different eight 6-ring $Ag^+$ ions were found; $7Ag^+$ ions in the (111) planes of their O(3) framework oxygens and one $Ag^+$ ion inside of sodalite cavity. Two crystallographically different 8-ring cations were also found; two $Rb^+$ ions at the centers of the 8-oxygen rings and one $Ag^+$ ion into the large cavity. Both structures indicate that $Rb^+$ ions prefer to occupy the 8-ring sites, while $Ag^+$ ions prefer to occupy the 6-ring sites.

  • Although the lowering of Ag content in Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu is known to improve the mechanical shock reliability of the solder joint, it is also known to be detrimental to the solderbility. In this study, the quaternary alloying effect of In and the minor alloying effects of Mn and Pd on the solderability, thermal cycling and mechanical shock reliabilities of the low Ag content Sn-1.2Ag-0.7Cu solder were investigated using board-level BGA packages. The solderability of Sn-1.2Ag-0.7Cu-0.4In was proved to be comparable to that of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu but its thermal cycling reliability was inferior to that of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu. While the 0.03 wt% Pd addition to the Sn-1.2Ag-0.7Cu-0.4In decreased the solderability and reliabilities of solder joint, the 0.1 wt% Mn addition was proved to be beneficial especially for the mechanical shock reliability compared to those of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-1.0Ag-0.5Cu compositions. It was considered to be due that the Mn addition decreased the Young's modulus of low Ag content Pb-free solders.
