Passive microwave sea surface temperatures (SST) were validated in the Northwest Pacific using a total of 102,294 collocated matchup data between Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) / GPM Microwave Sensor(GMI) data and oceanic in-situ temperature measurements from March 2014 to December 2016. A root-mean-square (RMS) error and a bias error of the GMI SST measurements were evaluated to $0.93^{\circ}C$ and $0.05^{\circ}C$, respectively. The SST differences between GMI and in-situ measurements were caused by various factors such as wind speed, columnar atmospheric water vapor, land contamination near coastline or islands. The GMI SSTs were found to be higher than the in-situ temperature measurements at low wind speed (<6 m/s) during the daytime. As the wind speed increased at night, SST errors showed positive bias. In addition, other factors, coming from atmospheric water vapor, sensitivity degradation at a low temperature range, and land contamination, also contributed to the errors. One of remarkable characteristics of the errors was their latitudinal dependence with large errors at high latitudes above $30^{\circ}N$. Seasonal characteristics revealed that the errors were most frequently observed in winter with a significant positive deviation. This implies that SST errors tend to be large under conditions of high wind speeds and low SSTs. Understanding of microwave SST errors in this study is anticipated to compensate less temporal capability of Infrared SSTs and to contribute to increase a satellite observation rate with time, especially in SST composite process.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the trend of nursing research by analyzing doctoral dissertations of nursing college at Seoul National University. Method: The doctoral dissertations used in this study were 69 thesis from 1989 to 2001. The methodological characteristics, theory, philosophy and world view in these thesis were explored. Key words were classified according to metaparadigm and were compared with MeSH term. Result: There were 54 dissertations of quantitative research and 12 dissertations of qualitative research. Most of subjects of the thesis were patients with 20~65 years old. The written consent to participate in research was not described in great part of thesis. As to measurement, questionnaire was most frequent used. In independent variables cognitive nursing interventions were used frequently. Psychosocial variables as a dependent variable were used mainly. In theory level of research, situation-producing research was performed. In type of nursing knowledge according to Caper many dissertations studied about empirical knowledge. More than half of doctoral dissertations used borrowed theory from nursing related disciplines. Most of studies were done within empirical positivism and organic viewpoint. Key words related to the concept of environment among four metaparadigm has been insufficiently studied. English key words in doctoral thesis were out of accordance largely with MeSH term English. Conclusion: These results show that it is necessary to develop the nursing theory for nursing knowledge body.
Admissions officer system was introduced in an effort to reject the score-oriented competition and select students on the basis of their individual potential and capacity. The admissions officer system, which was first introduced into the college entrance examination for the 2008 school year in Korea, has been operated by expanding the recruiting level up to 11.8% of the number of the students to be admitted by all colleges. The aim of this study is to analyze the performance of the admissions officer system by analyzing the true picture of school life led by the students singled out through admissions officer screening, and further to inquire into the substantial plan to support the students, who were selected through the admissions officer system, for their successful college life while displaying their potential and capacity As a result of doing research on this, it was found that the freshmen selected through admissions officer screening showed more positive responses in all measurement variables this study selected, such as school adaptability, school satisfaction, and career maturity, learning attitude than other students screened in a different way; in addition, school adaptability and school satisfaction came out as significantly high variables statistically. However, they showed insufficiency in the attitude in class from the behavioral aspect in learning attitude. This study made a suggestion that it's necessary for systematic support and management program to be mapped out and provided in order for the students selected through admissions officer screening to improve their learning attitude as they inspire themselves with school adaptability and school satisfaction.
The study tested QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe) sample preparation and HPLC-MS/ MS analysis for measurement of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetable. 240 kinds of pesticides spiked at three levels of 90, 45, 9 ng/g in lettuce and apple. For QuEChERS sample preparation, graphitized carbon black (GCB) was used for only lettuce in dispersive-SPE as absorbent. Matrix-matched standard calibration was used for quantitative analysis of HPLC-MS/MS. 218 pesticides (91%) in apple and 207 pesticides (86%) in lettuce showed recoveries in the range of 70~120% with $RSD{\leq}20%$. The lowest calibrated level (LCL) were 4.5 ng/g for 192 pesticides, 9 ng/g for 42 pesticides, 45 ng/g for 3 pesticides and 3 pesticides were not detected at all concentration levels. The results showed that the QuEChERS sample preparation and HPLC-MS/MS analysis can be applied to multi-residue analysis of pesticides in vegetables and fruits.

Purpose: This study was designed to verify preemptive effects of intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) infusion on postoperative pain in women having a total abdominal hysterectomy. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group post test only design. The participants in this study were 50 women who were scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy at a University affiliated Hospital in Suwon, Korea. The subjects were divided into two groups. For the experimental group, IV-PCA infusion was started before the skin incision and for the control group. IV-PCA infusion was started after the skin was closed. Each group was evaluated in terms of pain score by the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the number of times they pushed the button for IV-PCA at postoperative hours 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, and 24. The data were collected from July 1 to December 10, 2001. Collected data was analyzed by SPSS/PC + program. Result: 1. There was no difference between the two groups, over six points for the number of times the control button for IV-PCA was used. Group differences and interaction effect were not significant. 2. There was no significant difference in pain scores between the two groups, over seven time points. A significant interaction effect was observed between groups and measurement Points in time. 3. There was a significant difference in the requirements for additional analgesia between the two groups, 32% of the control group received additional analgesia. Conclusion: Preemptive analgesics administration may have a better effect in relieving postoperative pain than the usual analgesic treatment which is started after surgery.

The organic carbon in the ambient particulate matter (PM) is divided into primary organic carbon (POC) and secondary organic carbon (SOC) by their formation way. To regulate PM effectively, the estimation of the amount of POC and SOC separately is one of important consideration. Since SOC cannot be measured directly, previous studies have evaluated determination of SOC by the EC tracer method. The EC tracer method is a method of estimating the SOC value from calculating the POC by determining (OC/EC)pri which is the ratio of the measured values of OC and EC from the primary combustion source. In this study, three different ways were applied to OC and EC concentrations in PM2.5 measured at Seoul for determining (OC/EC)pri: 1) the minimum value of OC/EC ratio during the measurement period; 2) regression analysis of OC vs. EC to select the lower 5-20% OC/EC ratio; 3) determining the OC/EC ratio which has lowest correlation coefficient value (R2) between EC and SOC which is reported as minimum R squared method (MRS). Each (OC/EC)pri ratio of three ways are 0.35, 1.22, and 1.77, respectively from the 1 hourly data. We compared the (OC/EC)pri ratio from 1hourly data with 24 hourly data and revealed that (OC/EC)pri estimated from 24 hourly data had twice larger than 1hourly data due to the low time resolution of sampling. We finally confirmed that the most appropriate value of (OC/EC)pri is that calculated by a regression analysis of 1 hourly data and estimated SOC amounts at PM2.5 of the Seoul atmosphere.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to investigate the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to identify associated factors with MetS among rural residents. Methods: Data were collected from 1,196 subjects over aged 30 years by a self-administered questionnaire, physical measurement, and blood test in a rural area. The prevalence of MetS was determined by the criteria of the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) and 2005 the Korean society for the study of obesity. Results: The prevalence of MetS was 40.5% for men, 49.2% for women. The prevalence of risk factors of MetS was 57.4% for elevated blood pressure, 49.0% for low HDL-cholesterol, and 48.6% for abdominal obesity. Unemployment and higher Body mass index (BMI) were associated factors for MetS regardless of gender. And higher age and physical inactivity in women only increased the odds of the MetS. Especially, BMI was a strong risk factor of MetS in both men and women. Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in a rural area. Therefore, health care providers should develop lifestyle modification program to increase physical activity level and to prevent the obesity among rural residents in order to decrease the prevalence of MetS.

Objectives : The authors conducted randomized, Double-blinded, and placebo-controlled parallel-group clinical experiment study to evaluate efficacy of fermented soybean(Bio-Peptone)cream in pruritus. Methods : The research had been conducted for 4 months from the date of IRB approval(May 26 in 2017) to Sept 2017. The experiment started by randomly distributing 25 subjects with pruritus into experimental group and control group, respectively. The experimental group applied fermented soybean(Bio-Peptone)cream twice a day, in the morning and evening, for one week on itchy area. The effect of the product was evaluated by comparing the PSS(Patient subjective score), moisture level by measuring skin moisture content(Corneometer) and transepidermal water loss(Tewameter), and the Korean version of Skindex-29(index of quality of life improvement) before applying the cream, after applying the cream for one week and after stop applying the cream for one week. The control group conducted identical experiment with the experimental group, except the control group applied placebo instead of the fermented soybean(Bio-Peptone)cream. Results : Pruritus, criterion of the first validation testing, indicates fermented soybean(Bio-Peptone)cream tend to reduce pruritus compare to placebo, although the result is not statistically noticeable. Significant difference in reduction of prutitus, the second validation test was not discovered in both groups. Corneometer and life quality tend to be improved with soy cream than placebo, but not statistically effective and both groups did not show any difference in terms of Tewameter measurement. Conclusions : The result of clinical experiment didn't prove that the fermented soybean(Bio-Peptone)cream is more effective in reducing pruritus than placebo, statistically. The clinical use of soybean product for pruritus requires further studies to be verified.

The polyamines are essential components of all eukaryotic cells and absolutely necessary for cell growth. In the present study, the cytoprotective role of polyamine was characterized. When $Ac_2F$ rat liver cells were treated with 1M 2,2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dehydrochloride (AAPH), a water soluble free radical initiator, viability of the cells was noticeably decreased due to the increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The cytotoxic effect of AAPH as well as ROS generation were significantly inhibited by the treatment of polyamines. Among polyamines, especially spermine at $20{\mu}M$ concentration exerted over $45\%$ inhibition of AAPH-induced ROS generation. Western blotting was performed to determine whether superoxide dismutase(SOD) or catalase (CAT) expression was involved in oxidative stress. The AAPH treatment blocked both SOD and CAT protein expressions. Spermine could recover those protein expressions to the untreated control levels. According to the result of cycline E measurement, AAPH might block the entry of the cells into S phase of the cell cycle. The reduced expression of cyclin E protein could be fully recovered by the addition of spermine. The antioxidative effects of spermine was also further proved by the apopotitic morphological analysis using ethidium bromide and acridine orange.

This study was performed to evaluate the seasonal variation of intraocular pressure (IOP) values in normal Sapsaree dogs. Sapsaree dogs (n = 474) clinically free from ophthalmic disease were included in this study, and both eyes were examined in each dog. An applanation tonometer (Tonopen$^{(R)}$ XL) was used to measure IOP values in both eyes. Data obtained from both eyes were stratified by factors thought to affect IOP values including age, gender, hair coat type as well as season of measurement. The IOP results were compared by ANCOVA to verify the effect each factor had on IOP, and an ANOVA test followed by a Bonferroni post hoc test was used for further analysis. The overall mean ${\pm}$ SD IOP value was $19.1{\pm}3.7$ mmHg (range: 8 to 28 mmHg) in the present study. Only seasonal variation showed a significant effect (P < 0.001), on IOP values. IOP values measured in winter ($20.4{\pm}3.4$ mmHg) and summer ($17.1{\pm}3.6$ mmHg) were significantly higher and lower, respectively, than those measured in other seasons. These results suggest a seasonal variation has a significant effect on the IOP of normal dogs. This may prompt further research and possible modification of current veterinary ophthalmic references.
