  • The influence of the water vapor on the growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was investigated. SWCNTs were synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of acetylene over Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst with injection of water vapor. The morphologies and structures of the water-assisted SWCNTs were investigated according to the growth conditions such as water vapor concentrations, flow rate of the gas, furnace temperature, and growth time. Water-assisted SWCNTs exhibited large bundle morphological features with well-alignment of each CNT, while SWCNTs synthesized in the absence of water vapor showed entangled CNT with the random orientation. We also found that the diameter of the SWCNT bundle could be controlled by the growth condition. In our optimal growth condition, the product yield and the purity were 300 wt. % and 75%, which were 7.5 and 2.5 times higher than those of SWCNTs synthesized without water vapor, respectively. More detail discussion will be offered at the poster presentation.

  • Electrodes were fabricated based on activated carbon powder BP-20, conducting agent such as Super P, vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) and acetylene black (AB), and the mixed binders of flexible poly(vinylidenefluoridehexafluoropropylene) [P(VdF-co-HFP)] and cross linking dispersion agent of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to increase mechanical strength. According to impedance measurement of the electrode with the addition of conducting agent, we found that it was possible to charge rapidly by the fast steady-state current convergence due to low equivalent series resistance (AC-ESR, fast charge transfer rate at interface between electrode and electrolyte and low RC time constant. The self-discharge of unit cell showed that diffusion process was controlled by the ion concentration difference of initial electrolyte due to the characteristics of Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) charged by ion adsorption in the beginning, but this by current leakage through the double-layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface had a minor effect and voltages of curves were remained constant regardless of electrode material. We found that the 2.3V/230F grade EDLC would be applied to industrial safety usage such as uninterrupted power supply (UPS) because of the constant DC-ESR by IR drop regardless of discharge current.

  • We report a simple route for synthesizing multi-dimensional structured silicon anode materials from commercially available bulk silicon powders via metal-assisted chemical etching process. In the first step, silver catalyst was deposited onto the surface of bulk silicon via a galvanic displacement reaction. Next, the silver-decorated silicon particles were chemically etched in a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and hydrogen peroxide to make multi-dimensional silicon consisting of one-dimensional silicon nanowires and micro-scale silicon cores. As-synthesized silicon particles were coated with a carbon via thermal decomposition of acetylene gas. The carbon-coated multi-dimensional silicon anodes exhibited excellent electrochemical properties, including a high specific capacity (1800 mAh/g), a stable cycling retention (cycling retention of 89% after 20 cycles), and a high rate capability (71% at 3 C rate, compared to 0.1 C rate). This process is a simple and mass-productive (yield of 40-50%), thus opens up an effective route to make a high-performance silicon anode materials for lithiumion batteries.

  • We herein report a new analytical application of XPS to the identification of organic molecules in room temperature ionic liquid for the first time. An organic compound, propargylamine (1), produced in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][$PF_6$]), which is one of the room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), via $A^3$ coupling reaction, is characterized by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) rather than using conventional organic compound analysis techniques. There are four non-equivalent carbons in RTILs and 1 each. The ratios of normalized integrated areas of the deconvoluted binding energy of core electron of carbon (C1s) peaks are well matched to the number of carbons in those compounds. The binding energies of C1s of the featured carbons in 1, C4 (sp carbons in acetylene group) and C5 ($sp^2$ carbons in benzene ring), are assigned 286.2 and 285.4 eV, respectively. These results will be able to provide an important tool and a new strategy for the analysis of organic molecules

  • Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is one of the various synthesis methods that have been employed for carbon nanotube (CNT) growth. In particular, Ren et al reported that large areas of vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes could be grown using a direct current (dc) PECVD system. The synthesis of CNT requires a metal catalyst layer, etchant gas, and a carbon source. In this work, the substrates consists of Si wafers with Ni-deposited film. Ammonia $NH_3$) and acetylene ($C_2H_2$) were used as the etchant gases and carbon source, respectively. Pretreated conditions had an influence on vertical growth and density of CNTs. And patterned growth of CNTs could be achieved by lithographical defining the Ni catalyst prior to growth. The length of single CNT was increased as niclel dot size increased, but the growth rate was reduced when nickel dot size was more than 200 nm due to the synthesis of several CNTs on single Ni dot. The morphology of the carbon nanotubes by TEM showed that vertical CNTs were multi-wall and tip-type growth mode structure in which a Ni cap was at the end of the CNT.

  • Vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF) nano-materials such as carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers were directly grown on the surface of the stainless steel mesh pre-treated by reduction. The reduction of the stainless steel mesh by hydrogen formed small catalytic particles and large particles with bi-modal distribution on the metal surface. When the VGCFs were synthesized on the reduced mesh, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were dominantly grown from the small catalytic particles without supplying hydrogen gas. However, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were dominantly grown from the large catalytic particles with hydrogen.

  • Cr-diamond-like carbon (Cr-DLC) films were deposited using a hybrid method involving both physical vapor deposition and plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. DLC sputtering was carried out using argon and acetylene gases. With an increase in the DC power, the Cr content increased from 14.7 to 29.7 at%. The Cr-C bond appeared when the Cr content was 17.6 at% or more. At a Cr content of 17.6 at%, the films showed an electrical conductivity of > 363 S/cm. The current density was 9.12 × 10-2 ㎂/㎠, and the corrosion potential was 0.240 V. Therefore, a Cr content of 17.6 at% was found to be optimum for the deposition of the Cr-DLC thin films. The Cr-DLC thin films developed in this study showed high conductivity and corrosion resistance, and hence, are suitable for applications in separators.

  • Throughout the world, studies on the water energization are currently under way. Of those, Brown gas, which is generated through the electrolyzation of water and is a mixed gas of the constant volume of 2 parts hydrogen to 1 part oxygen, has better characteristics in terms of economy, energy efficiency, and environmental affinity than those of acetylene gas and LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) used for existing welding machines. This paper analyzes the characteristics of Brown gas and presents methods for increasing the generating efficiency of Brown gas by designing a power supply to deliver power to a water-electrolytic cell and designing a cylindrical electrode to improve the efficiency of the electrolyzer needed for water electrolyzation. Based on the above the methods, a welding machine using Brown gas is developed. And the generation efficiency of Brown gas is measured tinder different conditions (duty ratio, frequency and amplitude) of supplied power.

  • The mixed gas of Hydrogen and Oxygen is gained from water electrolysis reaction. It has constant volume ratio 2 : 1 Hydrogen and Oxygen, and it is used as a source of thermal energy by combustion reaction. This gas has better characteristics in the field of economy, efficiency of energy, and environmental intimacy than acetylene gas and LPG used for gas welding machine. So several studies of this gas are actively in progress nowadays. The object of this study is the optimization of power condition in the side of electricity for the Hydrogen-Oxygen gas generator, Firstly chemical analysis of electrolysis is conducted, and the relation of electrical energy and chemical energy is quantitatively investigated through Faraday's laws of electrolysis. After that, pulse power supply is designed for basic experiment which could be applied to the analysis of Hydrogen-Oxygen gas generator. In the basis of above steps, comparison and analysis of Hydrogen-Oxygen gas generator was conducted as variable frequency using pulse Power supply.
