  • The effect of an electric field on the ac electrical treeing in various epoxy/reactive diluent systems was studied in a needle-plate electrode geometry. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) type epoxy was used as a base resin, and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDGE) or polyglycol (PG) as a reactive diluent was introduced to the DGEBA system, in order to decrease the viscosity of the DGEBA epoxy system. BDGE was acted as a chain extender, and PG acted as a flexibilizer, after the curing reaction. To measure the treeing initiation time and the propagation rate, three constant alternating currents (ac) of 10, 13 and 15 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) were applied to the specimen, in a needle-plate electrode arrangement, at $30^{\circ}C$ of insulating oil bath. When 10 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied, the treeing initiation time and the propagation rate in the DGEBA system were 356 min and $1.10{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, respectively, those in the DGEBA/BDGE system were 150 min and $1.14{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, respectively. Those in the DGEBA/PG system were 469 min and $1.05{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, respectively. As 15 kV/4.2 mm (60 Hz) was applied, the propagation rate in the DGEBA system was $5.41{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min, and that in the DGEBA/PG system was $1.42{\times}10^{-3}$ mm/min. These values meant that PG could be used as a reactive diluent in the DGEBA system, without the deterioration of the insulation breakdown property.

  • Studies on the effects of layered silicate content on the AC electrical treeing and breakdown behaviors of epoxy/layered silicate nanocomposites were carried out in needle-plate electrode geometry. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation showed that 1 wt% of the multilayered silicate was fully exfoliated into nano-sized monolayers in the epoxy matrix however, over 3 wt% of the silicate was in an intercalated state. When 1 wt% layered silicates were incorporated, an electrical tree was initiated in 439 min and propagated at a speed of 2.3 ${\mu}m$/min after applying 781.4 kV/mm, representing a decreased in starting initiation time by a factor of 11.0 and increase in propagation speed by a factor 8.2 in comparison with neat epoxy resin. These values were in great decline after the layered silicate content was increased to 3wt% which implies that the exfoliated silicate blocked the tree initiation and propagation processes effectively. However the effect was largely decreased in the intercalated state.

  • XLPE compound have used for insulation of 22.9(kV) power cable. But tree retardant power cable has developed and is going to br used commonly. TR XLPE compound retard production and growth of water tree. In this paper, tensile strength, elongation at break, degree of crosslinking, lightning impulse test, AC breakdown test, cyclic aging for 14days and accelerated water treeing test of TR XLPE insulated power cable were examined according to the KEPCO buying spec. & AEIC CS 5-94 standards. before and after As the result, tensile strength, elongation at break and degree of crosslinking test results of TR XLPE insulation were higher than requirement values. After accelerated water treeing test for 120 days, 240 days and 360 days, AC breakdown voltages were not decreased for accelerated water treeing aging duration

  • The effects of amino silane coupling agent on the AC electrical treeing and breakdown behaviors in an epoxy/layered silicate (1 wt%) were examined in needle-plate electrode geometry. A layered silicate was exfoliated in an epoxy base resin by using our AC electric field apparatus. To measure the tree initiation and propagation and the breakdown rate, an alternating current (AC) of 10 kV (60 Hz) was applied to the specimen in needle-plate electrode arrangement with a $30^{\circ}C$ insulating oil bath. In the epoxy/amino silane system, the tree initiation time was 11.5 times higher and the breakdown time was 17.9 times higher than those of the neat epoxy resin. The tree initiation time in the epoxy/layered silicate (1 wt%) system with the amino silane was 2.0 times higher, and the breakdown time was 1.5 times higher than those of the epoxy/layered silicate (1 wt%) system.

  • Treeing inhibitors of barbituric acid derivatives effects on the electrical properties of crosslinked low density polyethylene under radiation environments were investigated. The electrical parameters for tree inception voltage, AC breakdown strength, volume resistivity, capacitance and dissipation factor at 1MHz and thermoluminescence, gel content measurements were discussed as a function of irradiated dosages. From the results, barbituric acid among the treeing inhibitors was shown the best treeing and radiation resistance.

  • we have investigated the effect of aromatic compounds and tree inception and growth in low density polyethylene, for AC voltage and Impulse voltage. 2kinds of aromatic compounds are selected. Each additive (m-cresol, aniline) was mixed in low density polyethylene. For AC voltage, 10wt% $\sim$ 15wt% m-cresol can be shown to be the effective inhibitor to tree initiation. But, For Impulse voltage, 10wt% $\sim$ 15wt% aniline is effective inhibitor to tree initiation.

  • Insulation layers in XLPE power cables may have some patterns generated in the manufacturing process. They are called 'flow patterns' and show flow history of molten polyethylene between inner and outer semiconducting layers. Flow patterns are even seen with naked human eyes and suspected to be inhomogeniety of insulation, weakening insulation performance. Investigated in this paper is electrical treeing resistance and ac breakdown strength according to flow patterns. Experiments of electrical treeing and ac breakdown strength by means of ramp tests were conducted using newly developed electrode system with point-to-plane structure and sphere-to-sphere structure, respectively. All results were analyzed with the application of statistics, showing little differences.

  • The cross-linked polyethylene(XLPE) has been most widely used for the power cable insulating layer because of its outstanding properties such as electrical and mechanical properties. However, XLPE is unrecyclable when disposed after replacement and demolishing because it becomes thermosetting through cross-linked process. Recently, because of growing social awareness of recycling and eco-friendly, there is growing need for the development of recyclable insulating materials that can replace XLPE. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to compare the electrical properties of XLPE and recyclable thermoplastic insulating materials. To this end, we compared and analyzed the electrical properties of XLPE and group N2 through AC breakdown test, accelerated water treeing test and accelerated life test(ALT).

  • The fractal characteristics of AC electrical tree grown in DGEBA/MDA/ SN/HQ system was investigated. As the applied voltage decreased, tree initiated after retardation. All the trees were fractals in spite of tile applied voltage. Fractal dimension increased with tree length. When the tree grew slowly, the fractal dimension or tile degree of treeing deterioration increased.
