  • Strigol, a natural product isolated from root exudates of cotton, was found to be an extremely potent seed germination stimulant for the parasitic plant, witchweed. Witchweed seeds can remain dormant in the soil for several years until favorable conditions prevail including exposure to some type of chemical germination stimulant. Several strigol analogues, 3-methyl-4-(2-oxo-3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydro-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(21), 4-(2-oxo-3,3a,6,6a-tetrahydro-2H-cyclopenta[b]furan-3-ylidenemethoxy)but-2-en-4-oilde(22), 3-methyl-4-(2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(23), and 4-(2-oxotetrahydrofuran-3-ylidenemethoxy)-but-2-en-4-olide(24), were synthesized.

  • A $Fe_3O_4$-graphite nanofiber composite for use as an anode material was successfully synthesized by calcining $Fe_3O_4$ and graphite nanofiber (GNF) together in a $N_2$ atmosphere. Using this $Fe_3O_4$-GNF composite in a lithium ion battery resulted in a higher lithium storage capacity than that obtained using $Fe_3O_4$-graphite ($Fe_3O_4$-G). The $Fe_3O_4$-GNF (10 wt%) electrode exhibited a higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient ($2.29{\times}10^{-9}cm^2s^{-1}$) than did the $Fe_3O_4$-G (10%) ($3.17{\times}10^{-10}cm^2s^{-1}$). At a current density of $100mA\;g^{-1}$, the $Fe_3O_4$-GNF (10 wt%) anode showed a higher reversible capacity ($1,031mAh\;g^{-1}$) than did the $Fe_3O_4$-G (10%) anode ($799mAh\;g^{-1}$). Moreover, the $Fe_3O_4GNF$ electrodes showed good cycling performance without the addition of a conductive material.

  • 3D printing is a technology that converts a computer-generated 3D model into a real object with additive manufacturing technology. A majority of 3D printing technologies uses one material, and this is considered a limitation. In this study, we developed a multi-material 3D printer by adopting dual resin vat and cleaning system with DLP (Digital Light Processing) 3D printing technology. The developed multi-material DLP 3D printer is composed of a manufacturing system, cleaning system, transporting system, and automatic resin recharging system. Various 3D structures were 3D printed with two materials, thus demonstrating the potential. Printing performance of the multi-material DLP 3D printer was studied by performing a comparative surface roughness test and tension test on specimens composed of one material as well as those composed of two materials.

  • A 3D CAD system that can be used on a smart device is proposed. Smart devices are now a part of everyday life and also are widely being used in various industry domains. The proposed 3D CAD system would allow modeling in a rapid and intuitive manner on a smart device when an engineer makes a 3D model of a product while moving in an engineering site. There are several obstacles to develop a 3D CAD system on a smart device such as low computing power and the small screen of smart devices, imprecise touch inputs, and transfer problems of created 3D models between PCs and smart devices. The author discusses the system design of a 3D CAD system on a smart device. The selection of the modeling operations, the assignment of touch gestures to these operations, and the construction of a geometric kernel for creating both meshes and a procedural CAD model are introduced. The proposed CAD system has been implemented for validation by user tests and to demonstrate case studies using test examples. Using the proposed system, it is possible to produce a 3D editable model swiftly and simply in a smart device environment to reduce design time of engineers.

  • Kinesin-2 comprises two subfamilies of the heterotrimeric or homodimeric motors found in mammalian cells. Heterotrimeric kinesin-2 consists of kinesin superfamily proteins (KIFs) 3A and 3B and kinesin-associated protein 3 (KAP3), which is a molecular motor protein that moves along microtubules. It plays diverse roles in cargo transport, including anterograde trafficking in cilia, and interacts with many different cargoes and proteins, but their binding proteins have not yet been fully identified. In this study, the yeast two-hybrid assay was used to identify the proteins that interact with the cargo-binding domain (CBD) of KIF3A, and an interaction between KIF3A and brain expressed X-linked 2 (Bex2) was found. Bex2 bound to the CBD-containing C-terminal tail region of KIF3A but did not interact with the same region of KIF3B or KIF5A (a motor protein of kinesin-1). KIF3A interacted with another isoform, Bex1, but did not interact with Bex3. In addition, glutathione S-transferase (GST) pull-downs showed that KIF3A specifically interacts with GST-Bex1 and GST-Bex2 but not with GST alone. When co-expressed in HEK-293T cells, Bex2 co-localized with KIF3A and co-immunoprecipitated with KIF3A and KIF3B but not KIF5B. In combination, these results suggest that Bex2 is capable of binding to heterotrimeric kinesin-2 and may serve as an adaptor protein that links heterotrimeric kinesin-2 with cargo.

  • Recently, we reported that defective autophagy may contribute to the inhibition of the growth in response to PP2 (4-amino-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-7-(t-butyl)pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine), a selective SFK inhibitor, in multidrug-resistant v-Ha-ras-transformed NIH 3T3 cells (Ras-NIH 3T3/Mdr). In this study, we demonstrated that PP2 induces LC3 conversion via a mechanism that is uncoupled from autophagy and increases apoptosis in Ras-NIH 3T3/Mdr cells. PP2 preferentially induced autophagy in Ras-NIH 3T3 cells rather than in Ras-NIH 3T3/Mdr cells as determined by LC3-I to LC3-II conversion and GFP-LC3 fluorescence microscopy. Beclin 1 knockdown experiments showed that, regardless of drug resistance, PP2 induces autophagy via a Beclin 1-dependent mechanism. PP2 induced a conformational change in Beclin 1, resulting in the enhancement of the pro-autophagic activity of Beclin 1, in Ras-NIH 3T3 cells. Further, PI3K inhibition induced by wortmannin caused a significant increase in apoptosis in Ras-NIH 3T3 cells, as demonstrated by flow cytometric analysis of Annexin V staining, implying that autophagy inhibition through PI3K increases apoptosis in response to PP2 in Ras-NIH 3T3 cells. However, despite the fact that wortmannin abrogates PP2-induced GFP-LC3 punctae formation, some LC3 conversion remains in Ras-NIH 3T3/Mdr cells, suggesting that LC3 conversion may occur in an autophagy-independent manner. Taken together, these results suggest that PP2 induces LC3 conversion independent of PI3K, concomitant with the uncoupling of LC3 conversion from autophagy, in multidrug-resistant cells.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to measure the power density of light curing units transmitted through resin inlays fabricated with direct composite (Filtek Z350, Filtek Supreme XT) and indirect composite (Sinfony). Materials and Methods: A3 shade of Z350, A3B and A3E shades of Supreme XT, and A3, E3, and T1 shades of Sinfony were used to fabricate the resin inlays in 1.5 mm thickness. The power density of a halogen light curing unit (Optilux 360) and an LED light curing unit (Elipar S10) through the fabricated resin inlays was measured with a hand held dental radiometer (Cure Rite). To investigate the effect of each composite layer consisting the resin inlays on light transmission, resin specimens of each shade were fabricated in 0.5 mm thickness and power density was measured through the resin specimens. Results: The power density through the resin inlays was lowest with the Z350 A3, followed by Supreme XT A3B and A3E. The power density was highest with Sinfony A3, E3, and T1 (p < 0.05). The power density through 0.5 mm thick resin specimens was lowest with dentin shades, Sinfony A3, Z350 A3, Supreme XT A3B, followed by enamel shades, Supreme XT A3E and Sinfony E3. The power density was highest with translucent shade, Sinfony T1 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Using indirect lab composites with dentin, enamel, and translucent shades rather than direct composites with one or two shades could be advantageous in transmitting curing lights through resin inlays.

  • This paper describes a 3.3V-65MHz 12BIT CMOS current-mode DAC designed with a 8 MSB current matirx stage and a 4 LSB binary weighting stage. The linearity errors caused by a voltage drop of the ground line and a threshold voltage mismatch of transistors have been reduced by the symmetrical routing method with ground line and the tree structure bias circuit, respectively. In order to realize a low glitch energy, a cascode current switch ahs been employed. The simulation results of the designed DAC show a coversion rate of 65MHz, a powr dissipation of 71.7mW, a DNL of .+-.0.2LSB and an INL of .+-.0.8LSB with a single powr supply of 3.3V for a CMOS 0.6.mu.m n-well technology.

  • With MPEG-4 3D mesh coding(3DMC), the problem of the need of a wide bandwidth can be solved to store and transmit 3D information because of its high compression rate. And to realize the 3D information service with broadcasting or internet, one needs to transmit not only the 3D contents but also the 3D player. Therefore, in this paper we implement a 3D player based on MPEG-4 using a java language. A well-known java language employed in this paper provides the player with a wider range of applications, for example, when the O/S or the platform are different, due to its properties of scalability and universality. The implemented player which has functions (translation, rotation, etc) that can manipulate contents decodes the 3D contents and displays them. In addition, the player has a network function that receives a 3D content from the server. This paper explains the architecture and characteristics of the player and shows its simulation results.

  • Currently used 3D models, which are mostly focused on visualization of 3D objects and lack topological structure, have limitation in being used for 3D spatial analyses and applications. However, implementing a full topology for the indoor spatial objects is less practical due to the increase of complexity and computation time. This study suggests an alternative method to build a 3D indoor model with less complexity using a spatial DBMS. Storing spatial and nonspatial information of indoor spaces in DB tables enables faster queries, computation and analyses. Also it is possible to display them in 2D or 3D using the queried information. This study suggests a 2D-3D hybrid data model, which combines the 2D topology constructed from CAD floor plans and stored in a spatial DBMS and the 3D visualization functionality. This study showed the process to build the proposed model in a spatial DBMS and use spatial functions and queries to visualize in 2D and 3D. And, then, as an example application, it illustrated the process to build an indoor evacuation simulator.
