  • The relations between the repulsive interactions and the electron density overlaps are investigated for various closed shell-closed shell pairs, including the systems containing alkali and halide ions. It is found that the repulsive interaction($V_{rep}$) depends on the overlap of the electron density($S_{\rho}$) according to a simple exponential relation, $V_{rep}$ = $As_{\rho}\;^{\alpha}$. Furthermore, for most of the closed shell systems the $\alpha$ values are near unity and the A values do not vary much. The same tests are also performed for the open shell-closed shell, and the open shell-open shell pairs. Although the results for these systems also show exponential dependences of the repulsive interactions on the density overlaps, the details of the dependence differ greatly from those for the closed shell systems and also vary widely from one individual system to another.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for applying oyster shells and egg shells as fireproof cladding materials by substituting fine aggregates for oyster shell powder and egg shell powder, and comparing strength and fire resistance performance. The reason for the high strength was thought to be that the oyster shell had higher strength than the egg shell itself, and both ESP and OSP were measured at a backside temperature of less than 500℃, so it was judged that it could be used as a fireproof coating for steel structures.

  • This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method to obtain the steady-state response of a hydrophone. The particular structure considered is a flooded piezoelectric spherical shell. The hydrophone is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce an incident plane acoustic pressure onto the outer surface of the sonar spherical shell to electrical potentials on inner and outer surfaces of the shell. The acoustic field formed from the scattered sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the shell caused by the externally incident acoustic pressure is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts were successfully prepared by impregnation of a carbon support with copper precursor, followed by transmetallation between platinum and copper. The Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts retained a core of copper with a platinum surface. The prepared catalysts were used for hydrogen production through catalytic dehydrogenation of decalin for eventual application to an onboard hydrogen supply system. Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts were more efficient at producing hydrogen via decalin dehydrogenation than Pt/C catalysts containing the same amount of platinum. Supported core-shell catalysts utilized platinum highly efficiently, and accordingly, are lower-cost than existing platinum catalysts. The combination of impregnation and transmetallation is a promising approach for preparation of Pt@Cu/C core-shell catalysts.

  • In this paper, a new three-dimensional piezoelectric thin shell element containing an integrated distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator is proposed. The distributed piezoelectric sensor layer monitors the structural shape deformation due to the direct effect and the distributed actuator layer suppresses the deflection via the converse piezoelectric effect. A finite element formulation is presented for static response of laminated shell with piezoelectric sensors/actuators. An eight-node and forty-DOF shell element is built. The performance of the shell elements is improved by reduced integration technique. The static shape control of structure is derived. The shell element is verified by calculating piezoelectric polymeric PVDF bimorph beam. The results agreed with those obtained by theoretical analysis, Tzou and Tseng (1990) and Hwang and Park (1993) fairly well. At last, the static shape control of a paraboloidal antenna is presented.

  • A nine node isoparametric plate bending element is used for bending analysis of laminated composite skew cylindrical shell panels. Both thick and thin shell panels are solved. Rotary inertia and shear deformation are incorporated by considering first order shear deformation theory. The analysis is performed considering shallow shell theory. Both shallow and moderately deep skew cylindrical shells are investigated. Skew cylindrical shell panels having different thickness ratios (h/a), radius to length ratios (R/a), ply angle orientations, number of layers, aspect ratio (b/a), boundary conditions and various loading (concentrated, uniformly distributed, linear varying and doubly sinusoidal varying) conditions are analysed. Various new results are presented.

  • The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a spherical cap attached at an arbitrary axial position of the shell. The boundary condition of the shell considered here was clamped-free condition. Before the analysis of the shell/spherical cap combined structure, natural frequencies of the cap and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. • One of the improtant characteristics of core-shell type nanoparticles is the long-term storage and reuse as an aqueous injection solution when required. For this reason, reconstruction of lyophilized core-shell type nanoparticles is considered to be essential . BAB type triblock copolymers differ from AB type diblock copolymers, which contain the A block as a hydrophilic part and the B block as a hydrophobic part. by not being easily redistributed into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4, 0.1 M). Therefore, lyophilized core-shell type nanoparticles of CEC triblock copolymer were reconstituted using a somication process with a bar-type sonicator in combination with a freezing-thawing process. Soncation for 30s only resuspended CEC nanoparticles in PBS; their particle size distribution showed a monomodal pattern with narrow size distribution. The bimodal size distribution pattern and the aggregates were reduced by further sonication for 120 s but these nanoparticles showed a wide size distribution. The initial burst of drug release was increased by reconstitution process. The reconstitution of CEC core-shell type nanoparticles by freezing-thawing resulted in trimodal distribution pattern and formed aggregates, although freezing-thawing process was easier than sonication . Drug release form CEC nanoparticles prepared by freezing-thawing was slower than from the original dialysis solution. Although core-shell typenanoparticles of CEC triblock copolymers were not easily performed. Cytotoxicity testing of core-shell type nanoparticles of CEC-2 triblock copolymers containing clonazepam (CNZ) was performed using L929 cells. Cytotoxicity of CNZ was decreased by incorporation into nanoparticles.

  • FE analyses for weldment of ship structure are required for various reasons such as stress concentration for bead tow, residual stress and distortion after welding, and hydrogen diffusion for prediction of low temperature crack. These analyses should be done by solid element modeling, but most of ship structures are modeled by shell element. If we are able to make solid element in the shell element FE modeling it is easily to solve the requirement for solid elements in weld analysis of large ship structures. As the nodes of solid element cannot take moments from nodes of shell element, these two kinds of element cannot be used in one model by conventional modeling. The PSCM (Perpendicular shell coupling method) can connect shell to solid. This method uses dummy perpendicular shell element for transferring moment from shell to solid. The target of this study is to develop a FE pre-processing system applicable at welding at ship structure by using PSCM. We also suggested glue-contact technique for controlling element numbers and element qualities and applied it between PSCM and solid element in automatic pre-processing system. The FE weldment modeling through developed pre-processing system will have rational stiffness of adjacent regions. Then FE results can be more reliable when turn-over of ship-block with semi-welded state or ECA (Engineering critical assessment) of weldment in a ship-block are analyzed.
