A new enhanced 8-node hybrid/mixed plane stress elements based on assumed stress fields and modifed shape functions has been presented. The assumed stress fields are derived from the non-conforming displacement modes, which are less sensitive to geometric distortion. Explicit expression of shape functions is modifed so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates under the same condition as 9-node isoparametric element. The newly developed element has been designated as 'HQ8-$14{\beta}$'. The presented element is compared with existing elements to establish its accuracy and efficiency. Over a wide range of mesh distortions, the element presented here is found to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements.

In this paper, we present a quadratic element model based on non-conforming displacement modes and modified shape functions. This new and refined 8-node hybrid stress plane element consists of two additional non-conforming modes that are added to the translational degree of freedom to improve the behavior of a membrane component. Further, the modification of the shape functions through quadratic polynomials in x-y coordinates enables retaining reasonable accuracy even when the element becomes considerably distorted. To establish its accuracy and efficiency, the element is compared with existing elements and - over a wide range of mesh distortions - it is demonstrated to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements and stresses.

In this paper the efficient finite element for stress analysis of plane stress/strain problems is proposed. This element is achieved by adding the bubble-mode function to 8-node element. The stiffness matrix of the element is calculated by using modified numerical integration order to avoid spurious zero energy mode. In order to demonstrate the performance of this element numerical tests for various verification problems are carried out. The results of numerical tests show accuracy and reliability of the element presented in this paper.
For the same configuration of two-dimensional finite element models, 6-node element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness than 8-node element. This is true in the relation between 16-node element and 20-node element for three-dimensional model. This stiffening phenomenon comes from the elimination of several mid nodes from full-node elements. Therefore, this may be called 'relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon'. It seems that there are a couple of ways to correct the stiffening effect, however, we could find only one effective method-the method of modification of Gauss sampling points-which passes the patch test and does not alter other kinds of stiffness, such as extensional stiffness. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratios of the constituent materials. We could obtain two modification equations, one for plane stress case and the other for plane strain case. This method can be extended to 3-dimensional solid elements. Except the exact plane strain cases, most 3-dimensional plates could be modeled successfully with 16-node element modified by the equation for the plane stress case. The effectiveness of the modification method is checked by applying it to several examples with excellent improvements. In numerical examples, beams with various boundary conditions are subjected to static and time-dependent loads. Free and forced motion analyses of beams and plates are also tested. The beam and plate may be composed of isotropic multilayers as well as a single layer.
In the present paper, we offer a new flat shell finite element. It is the result of the combination of a membrane element and a bending element, both based on the strain-based formulation. It is known that $C^{\circ}$ plane membrane elements provide poor deflection and stress for problems where bending is dominant. In addition, they encounter continuity and compliance problems when they connect to C1 class plate elements. The reach of the present work is to surmount these problems when a membrane element is coupled with a thin plate element in order to construct a shell element. The membrane element used is a triangular element with four nodes, three nodes at the vertices of the triangle and the fourth one at its barycenter. Each node has three degrees of freedom, two translations and one rotation around the normal. The coefficients related to the degrees of freedom at the internal node are subsequently removed from the element stiffness matrix by using the static condensation technique. The interpolation functions of strain, displacements and stresses fields are developed from equilibrium conditions. The plate element used for the construction of the present shell element is a triangular four-node thin plate element based on Kirchhoff plate theory, the strain approach, the four fictitious node, the static condensation and the analytic integration. The shell element result of this combination is robust, competitive and efficient.
The dynamic response of symmetric cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminated plates under impact loads is investigated using a higher order shear deformation theory. A modified Hertz law is used to predict the impact loads and a four node finite element is used to model the plate. By using a higer order shear deformation theory, the out-of-plane shear stresses, which can be a crucial factor in the failure of composite plates, are determined with significant accuracy. This is accomplished by using a stress recovery technique using the in-plane stresses. The results compared with previous investigations showed good agreement. It can be seen that this method of analyzing impact problems is more efficient than current three dimensional methods in terms of time and expense.

This study evaluates the behavior and strength of an anchorage zone of the prestressed concrete box girder bridge on the Kyungboo highway railroad using the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and a linear elastic finite element analysis. The 2D SUB-3D STM approach utilizes several two-dimensional sub strut-tie models that represent the compressive and tensile stress flows of each projected plane of the three-dimensional structural concrete in the selection of a three dimensional strut-tie model, evaluation of the effective strengths of the concrete struts, and verification of the geometric compatibility condition and bearing capacity of the critical nodal zones in the selected three-dimensional strut-tie model. The finite element analysis uses an 8-node brick element and the longitudinal prestressing force is considered as the equivalent nodal force. Analysis results show that the 2D SUB-3D STM approach and linear elastic finite element method can be effectively applied to the analysis and design of three-dimensional structural concrete including a prestressed concrete box girder anchorage zone.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the dynamic response of the mandible to impact and provide insight into the fracture mechanism of the mandible, by 3-dimensional finite element method. The finite element model of the mandible was developed and calculated using NASTRAN/XL (MSC co. U.S.A.) and the linear dynamic transient analysis was performed according to the impulsive force direction, force type and impulse time to the mandible. At first, the load was applied on the mandibular symphysis, body, angle and subcondylar area in the horizontal mandibular plane and the computed stress-time histories at 14 locations of the mandible were obtained. Secondly, the impulsive force was directed to the symphyseal area with changing the force magnitude and impulse time, and calculated the node displacement at 8 locations of mandible. The conclusions from from this study were as follows. 1. The appearance of impulsive energy transmission was different to the direction of impulse to the mandible. 2. The impulsive stress and deformation were larger in lingual or medial side than buccal or lateral in the mandible. 3. The velocity, appearance of energy transmission and the fracture pattern in mandible were affected rather impulse time than force. 4. The horizontal impact to the one side of mandible did not have effect on the stress and displacement of contralateral mandible. From the above results, fracture pattern in symphysis can be showed as simple or comminuted, multiple or associated in body and angle and solitary in subcondyle area.

This study deals with free vibrations of laminated composite structures with a channel section using finite element method. In this paper, the mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite interpolation functions is adopted and a high-order plate theory is used to analyze laminated composite non-prismatic folded plates with a channel section more accurately for free vibration. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress and requires no shear correction factors supposed in the first-order plate theory. An 32×32 matrix is assembled to transform the system element matrices from the local to global coordinates using a coordinate transformation matrix, in which an eighth drilling degree of freedom (DOF) per node is appended to the existing 7-DOF system. The results in this study are compared with those of available literatures for the conventional and first-order plate theory. Sample studies are carried out for various layup configurations and length-thickness ratio, and geometric shapes of plates. The significance of the high-order plate theory in analyzing complex composite structures with a channel section is enunciated in this paper.
