  • As a primitive immersive video technology, a three degrees of freedom (3DoF) $360^{\circ}$ video can currently render viewport images that are dependent on the rotational movements of the viewer. However, rendering a flat $360^{\circ}$ video, that is supporting head rotations only, may generate visual discomfort especially when objects close to the viewer are rendered. 3DoF+ enables head movements for a seated person adding horizontal, vertical, and depth translations. The 3DoF+ $360^{\circ}$ video is positioned between 3DoF and six degrees of freedom, which can realize the motion parallax with relatively simple virtual reality software in head-mounted displays. This article introduces the standardization trends for the 3DoF+ video in the MPEG-I visual group.

  • MPEG-I is actively working on standardization on the immersive video coding which provides up to 6 degree of freedom (6DoF) in terms of viewpoint. In a virtual space of 3DoF+, which is defined as an extension of 360 with motion parallax, looking at the scene from another viewpoint (another position in space) requires rendering an additional viewpoint using multiple videos included in the 3DoF+ video. In the MPEG-I Visual workgroup, efficient coding methods for 3DoF+ video are being studied, and they released Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV) recently. This paper presents a patch packing method which packs the patches into atlases efficiently for improving coding efficiency of 3DoF+ video in TMIV. The proposed method improves the reconstructed view quality with reduced coding artifacts by introducing guardbands between patches in the atlas.

  • Three degrees of freedom plus(3DoF+) and six degrees of freedom(6DoF) system, which supports a user's movements in graphical and natural scene-based virtual reality, requires multiple high-quality and high-resolution videos to provide immersive media. Previous video quality assessment methods are not appropriate for the 3DoF+ and 6DoF system assessment because different types of artifacts occur in these systems which are not shown in the traditional video compression. This paper provides the performance assessments of several quality assessment methods in 3DoF+ system. Furthermore, this paper presents a super metric, which combines multiple quality assessment methods, thereby it showed a higher correlation coefficient with the subjective quality assessment than the previous methods. Experimental results on 3DoF+ immersive video showed 0.4513 gain on correlation coefficient with subjective quality assessment compared to that of peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR).

  • System for three degrees of freedom plus (3DoF+) and 6DoF requires multi-view high resolution 360 video transmission to provide user viewport adaptive 360 video streaming. In this paper, we implement 3DoF+ 360 video compression system which removes the redundancy between multi-view videos and merges the residual into one video to provide high quality 360 video corresponding to an user's head movement efficiently. Implementations about 3D warping based redundancy removal method between 3DoF+ 360 videos and residual extraction and merger are explained in this paper. With the proposed system, 20.14% of BD-rate reduction in maximum is shown compared to traditional high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) based system.

  • The moving picture experts group (MPEG) immersive video (MIV) coding standard has been established to support six degrees of freedom (6DoF) in virtual reality (VR) by transmitting high-quality multiple immersive videos. The MIV exploits two approaches considering tradeoff between bandwidth and computational complexity: 1) eliminating correlation between multi-view videos or 2) selecting representative videos. This paper presents performance analysis on intermediate synthesized views on source view positions and synthesized pose traces using high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) and versatile video coding (VVC) for above-mentioned two approaches.

  • Recently, as the demand for immersive videos increases, efficient video processing techniques for omnidirectional immersive video is actively developed by MPEG-I. While the omnidirectional video provides a larger degree of freedom for a free viewpoint, the size of the video increases significantly. Furthermore, in order to compress 6 degree-of-freedom (6 DoF) videos that support motion parallax, it is required to develop a codec to yield better coding efficiency. In this paper, we develop a 6 DoF codec using Versatile Video Coding (VVC) as the next generation video coding standard. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first VVC-based 6 DoF video codec toward the future ISO/IEC 23090 Part 7 (Metadata for Immersive Media (Video)) MPEG-I standardization. The experiments were conducted on the seven test video sequences specified in Common Test Condition (CTC) in two operation modes of TMIV (Test Model for Immersive Media) software. It is demonstrated that the proposed codec improves coding performance around 33.8% BD-rate reduction in the MIV (Metadata for Immersive Video) mode and 30.2% BD-rate reduction in the MIV view mode as compared to the state-of-the-art TMIV reference software. We also show the performance comparisons using Immersive Video PSNR (IV-PSNR) and Mean Structural Similarity (MSSIM).

  • MPEG-I is actively working on standardization on the coding of immersive video which provides up to 6 degree of freedom (6DoF) in terms of viewpoint. 3DoF+ video, which provides motion parallax to omnidirectional view of 360 video, renders a view at any desired viewpoint using multiple view videos acquisitioned in a limited 3D space covered with upper body motion at a fixed position. The MPEG-I visual group is developing a test model called TMIV (Test Model for Immersive Video) in the process of development of the standard for 3DoF+ video coding. In the TMIV, the redundancy between a set of input view videos is removed, and several atlases are generated by packing patches including the remaining texture and depth regions into frames as compact as possible, and coded. This paper presents an atlas generation method that removes small-sized blocks in the atlas for more efficient 3DoF+ video coding. The proposed method shows a performance improvement of BD-rate bit savings of 0.7% and 1.4%, respectively, in natural and graphic sequences compared to TMIV.

  • 360 video is attracting attention as immersive media with the spread of VR applications, and MPEG-I (Immersive) Visual group is actively working on standardization to support immersive media experiences with up to six degree of freedom (6DoF). In virtual space of omnidirectional 6DoF, which is defined as a case of degree of freedom providing 6DoF in a restricted area, looking at the scene at any viewpoint of any position in the space requires rendering the view by synthesizing additional viewpoints called virtual omnidirectional viewpoints. This paper presents the performance results on view synthesis and their analysis, which have been done as exploration experiments (EEs) of omnidirectional 6DoF in MPEG-I. In other words, experiment results on view synthesis in various aspects of synthesis conditions such as the distances between input views and virtual view to be synthesized and the number of input views to be selected from the given set of 360 videos providing omnidirectional 6DoF are presented.

  • The MPEG-I (Immersive) group is working on a standardization project for immersive video that provides 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF). The MPEG Immersion Video (MIV) standard technology is intended to provide limited 6DoF based on depth map-based image rendering (DIBR) technique. Many efficient coding methods have been suggested for MIV, but efficient transmission strategies have received little attention in MPEG-I. This paper proposes group-based adaptive rendering method for immersive video streaming. Each group can be transmitted independently using group-based encoding, enabling adaptive transmission depending on the user's viewport. In the rendering process, the proposed method derives weights of group for view synthesis and allocate high quality bitstream according to a given viewport. The proposed method is implemented through the Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV) test model. The proposed method demonstrates 17.0% Bjontegaard-delta rate (BD-rate) savings on the peak signalto-noise ratio (PSNR) and 14.6% on the Immersive Video PSNR(IV-PSNR) in terms of various end-to-end evaluation metrics in the experiment.
