  • This study was purposed to examine the effect of the parental care burden on the labor force participation of the middle aged and older women. For this, this study used 2,125 samples aged from 50 to 70 years old that were extracted from 1st and 2nd wave of the Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS). In order to examine the causal relationship between two variables, Generalized Estimating Equation(GEE) and Multi-nominal Regression analysis were performed. The results showed that there was a positive effect of the parental care burden on the labor force participation of the middle aged and older women. However, this effect was limited only to the employment to the unpaid family workers. In addition, the effect was varied according to the level of caring time to the old parents. Based on that, several policy and practical implications were suggested.

  • In this work, we investigated the images of (unmarried) single women as seen from the viewpoint of married men and women. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty-seven (married) men and women of ages from twenties to sixties. By carrying out a content-analysis on the interview results, we could extract three different thematic types of images on single women, which are (1) single women seeking some outlet of their passion instead of forming a family, (2) single women who are enjoying a life of unbound liberty, unlike married men and women, and (3) single women who have distinct personalities from married men and women. Each of these three thematic types could be further classified into narrower themes of specific images. From the first theme of single women who are looking for some outlet of their passion instead of forming a family, one could extract two specific image types in which the single women choose their work as the main outlet of their passion, or else they choose self-development. From the second theme of single women who are leading a life of unbound liberty, four different specific types were found, which are single women with sexual freedom, single women enjoying liberty from the bondage of a family, single women who can freely choose men to go out with, single women who have privileges to enjoy consumption and leisure life only for themselves. From the third theme of single women who have distinct personalities from married men and women, four different types of images were found, that are single women who want to avoid the hard reality of marriage life, single women who are selfish and self-assertive and leading a life that is self-centered or one that is centered around communities of only singles, single women who have secret feelings of emptiness and loneliness, and finally single women who can not find satisfaction in their life style. The images of married men and women on (unmarried) single women are based on the perception that 'those single women are different from us because they are not married'. That is, married men and women look upon the life of single women from the perspective of marriage life that they are experiencing.

  • The purpose of this paper lies in the comparison of the body types between the subjects of Korean women in their 60's living in Russia and China. The findings are as follows. 1. The comparison of 80 items in physical measurements between the Korean women in their 60's living in Russia and China resulted in the differences in 57 items. While the height items including stature between them showed negligible differences, most of the length items relating to width, thickness, circumference, and obesity showed differences, which were big. 2. The analysis by using the physical measurements showed the differences in the number of the elements constituting the body types of the Korean women in their 60's, as 13 for those living in Russia and 11 for those living in China. 3. The cluster analysis for the comparison of the body types of each group, by categorizing the body types, produced three types for both groups. Koreans living in Russia were grouped as those with the short stature and light weight, the medium stature and medium weight, and the tall stature and heavy weight. Koreas living in China were classified as those with the short stature and medium weight, the tall stature and light weight, and the tall stature and heavy weight.

  • A cross-sectional analysis of blood pressure (BP) changes and the current prevalence and distribution of hypertension among age groups in Korea were conducted. Systolic (SBP), diastolic (DBP), and pulse (PP) pressures were evaluated. Residents visiting a local Community Health Center for a health check-up and/or participating in the Health Promotion Program were included for the analyses. A total of 6,570 subjects (2,809 men, 3,761 women) were divided into five age groups: 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and $70\leq$ years. Comparisons were made between sex and among age groups. SBP and DBP were continuously elevated, while men showed higher levels than women until their mid-60s; then, the trend was reversed. DBP in men became elevated from their 30s, reaching the highest in the 40s then slowly decreasing. DBP in women increased up to their 40s and 50s, then reached a plateau. PP increased rapidly from the 50s in both sexes. The major contributor of age-related BP elevation may be large artery stiffness in men, particularly from their 50s, while the blood pressure elevation of women may relate to diverse factors including large artery stiffness, stroke volume, and ventricular ejection rate. The rapid elevation of PP after the 50s in both men and women could represent a risk of cardiovascular or coronary mortality, particularly with increasing age. The current data showed a higher rate of hypertension in both sexes compared to previous reports. When those with both high-normal BP and hypertension are looked at in combination, BP management of the target population should be drastically elevated.

  • The corneal power and eye refraction error were studed in 472 unaccommodated right eyes of Korean adult human aged above 20 years. The mean corneal refractive power is 44.08D (female : 44.28D, male : 43.76D). It is 1.1D higher than that of the medel eye by Gullstrand (about 43.0D). The mean corneal power of myopia(44.11D) is similar that of emmetropia(43.97D) and hyperopia(44.24D), but mean corneal power of myopia between the ages of 20 and 29 is 1.42D higher than that of emmetropia. The corneal powers as a function of ages are enlarged with increasing rate of 0.2D~0.3D/10years.
