In this study, the attitudes of about 1200elementary and secondary students towards sciences lessons and scientists were investigated. For the survey of this study, simillar numbers of students in Seoul were selected from the 5th, 8th and 11th grades and from both sexes. For the attitudes towards science lessons, in the survey questionnaire, there were questions on the type of science lesson which students prefer and on student's assessment of science lessons which they receive. For the attitudes towards scientists, there were questions on scientists whom students respect, on students assessment of scientists and on students assessment of themselves. Results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) A great majority of students prefered the laboratory-based to classroom-based lessons, but this tendency was less apparent in olderstudents.More boys, compared with girls, prefered laboratory-based study. (2) The student's assessment of science lessons was positive in the elementary school, neutral in the middle school and negative in the high school level. Boys showed more positive attitudes towards the study of science. (3) Apparently more girls than boys mentioned Madam Curie as a scientist whom they respect, Students tended to respect scientists in terms of their personalities rather than their cognitive abilities. (4) Students tended to assess that scientist's are more able than themselves in cognitive areas while themselves are better in affective areas. The gap between student's asessments of scientists and that of themselves became bigger in high school students. The gap between boy's assessments of themselves and girl's assessments of themselves was bigger in high school level than in middle school. (5) The decline of students attitude towards science lessons was bigger than their attitude towards scientists.
The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of science-play activity that isn't easily completed in a course of study, put in practice an development activity class on the scientific inquiry skills and the scientific attitude of elementary school students. For this purpose, the general activity was applied for the comparative group (40 students), the science-play activity was applied for the experimental group (34 students); they are composed of 5th and 6th graders elementary school students of 74, a class of an hour during a week. The results were analyzed by means of comparing between groups as well as within groups. The results of this research is as follows: Firstly, the science-play activity as an development activity was effective in the improvement of the scientific attitudes of elementary school students. Secondly, the science-play activity as an development activity was effective in the improvement of the scientific inquiry skills of elementary school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare stress levels of elementary students according to three regional levels: a large city, a medium-sized city, and a rural area. Methods: This was a descriptive comparative survey using a convenience sample of 1,161 5th-and 6th-grade students. The stress level was measured by a stress scale that consisted of 65 items regarding personal characteristics, family, school, and peer factors. The data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression using the SPSS 10.0 statistical program. Results: Overall, the mean stress scores reported by the participants were near the middle of a 5-point scale and the level of family-related stress was highest, followed by peer, school, and individual-related stress. Sixth-graders and female students showed higher stress levels than 5th-graders and male students, respectively. The participants reporting unsatisfaction with their lives and those living in large cities tended to have significantly higher stress levels. Conclusion: Grade, gender, life satisfaction, and regional levels were all significant factors associated with high stress levels among elementary students. Development of stress management programs for this specific population, especially targeting students who are female and living in large cities, is needed.

Objectives: This study was carried out with 31, 519(16,653 boys, 14,857 girls) of elementary school students to investigate the prevalence of obesity at a district in Gwangju City. It can be applied to develope an educational program of the obesity control as basic data in this local area Methods: The data collected from May, 2004 to July, 2004 were analyzed by SAS PC+ 8.0 program. Children were selected depending on criteria from obesity index (%) by using physical index (height, body weight), and then subjects were classified into one of three groups according to the degree of obesity: mild(20~29.9%), moderate(30~49.9%), and severe($?50%{\cdot}$) obesity. Results: It showed that male elementary school students were higher and heavier than female elementary school students(p< .001) in every grade except the 4th grade(height) and the 6th grade ( body weight). The obesity rates of male students(11.6%) showed higher(p< .001) than those of female students(8.8%). Specially the 4th grade elementary school boys were higher than any other groups in obesity(13.7%). As a whole, the prevalence of obestiy showed mild(5.9%), moderate(3.8%), and severe(0.6%). Male students showed higher rate of obesity than those of female students. The obesity of male students showed higher rate than that of female students except 2-3rd grade elementary school students(p< .001). The obesity of 4~6th grade elementary school students showed higher rate than those of 1~3rd grade students(p< .001). Conclusions: The obesity rates of male students are higher than that of female students, and the obesity rates of 4~6th grade students are higher than those of 1-3rd grade students in the elementary school. Additionally, these results suggest that the program may be needed to prevent obesity of children.
The 7th National Education Process, implemented in 2004, features student-oriented, selective educational programs with a wide range of optional subjects. In 2005, reflecting this revised National Education Process, the College Scholastic Ability Test began allowing individual students to choose the subjects for examination they would like to take. As a result, the deviations of the college freshmen's academic achievements in some subjects have noticeably widened. This study shows academic abilities of the students on some subjects by comparing the results of 2008 College Scholastic Ability Test with that of the Basic Academic Ability Evaluation Test for freshmen in engineering college of Hongik university. Lastly, this paper presents some improvement plans in order to better accommodate students with academic achievement levels lower than what is expected by the university.
The purpose of this research was to survey and compare the status of science preference of elementary school students with that of middle school students. Preference for science was defined theoretically. According to theoretical model, a questionnaire was developed with piloting and consisted of three parts. First part was for background information, second part, for measurement of science preference and third for measurement of the relevant factors of science preference. The questionnaire was modified for primary school students. In July 2002, the questionnaire was administered to one class per grade of randomly selected 8 elementary and 8 middle schools all over the country and analyzed result of collected 696 elementary school students and 819 middle school students. Middle school students' science preference was low compared with elementary school students, especially in 'emotional response and 'valuational comprehension'. The preference for science became lower especially from 4th to 5th grade and from 8th to 9th grade. The differences of mean science preference were significant by gender. perception of science achievement. and future career choice. The average of science preference relevant factors of middle school students also became lower than elementary students, especially in 'educational factor'. Multiple regression analysis on the science preference showed that important factors were personal ability, the personal traits, rewards in school science and contents of school science, slightly different in elementary and secondary school. The way to promote students' preference for science was suggested on the analysis result.
This purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for preventing dental caries, and maintaining and enhancing Oral health education. The subject of this study through the survey of the recognition of Oral health education, a questionnaire survey and dental experience and Pit and fissure sealant status was conducted for 334 male and female students who were in the 4th, 5th, 6th grade of elementary school in Ulsan city. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS 11.5 with t-test, ANOVA and correlation. The obtained results were as follows 1. Experience caries on permanent teeth was male score of 58.0% and female score of 42.0% and an everage score of 52.7% very low. 2. The students who were in the 4th, 5th, 6th grade of elementary school Experience caries on permanent teeth is grad higher(p=0.000). Pit and fissure sealant of teeth number and teeth surface status by grad higher(pE0.016, p=0.000). 3. Oral health knowledge and behavior is significantly related to status(p=0.001), behavior and Daily tooth brushing frequency was significantly related to status(p=0.000). But experience caries on permanent teeth and Oral health knowledge and behavior beween wasn't significantly related to status.
The purpose of this study was to investigate gifted students' verbal-nonverbal interactions in small grouped classes and to classify them into characteristics. For this study, an instrument to measure gifted student's verbal-nonverbal interactions was developed. The subjects were 16 students of 5th and 6th grades at H-area gifted center in rural area. Video recorded was classified each 5minutes by researchers. The results were as follows; First, verbal interactions were about 27% and non-verbal interactions were about 73%. Activities unrelated to learning were about 20%. Second, high achievement gifted students enjoyed verbal interactions including discussions. Third, gifted students can be classified 3 types(Spoken-centered, Written-centered and Played-centered) by interactions. The results revealed that gifted student's verbal-nonverbal interactions played an important role in communication between students and teacher as well as students. Small-grouped instructions according to characteristic and levels of gifted students are needed in gifted science education.
Purpose : To find degree of internet addiction of rural elementary school students and to assess the relationship of them to the health promoting behaviors in a rural area in chungnam province. Method : Children's grade, sex and their internet habits, and family background and internet addiction records, health promoting behavior scores of 5th and 6th grade of elementary school students. Self-recorded questionnaire surveys from 2nd December to December 20, 2008, and total 393 data were analysed. Results : The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. The internet risk group of 5th and 6th grade of rural elementary school students were 18.3%. 2. Place of major using internet were home in 84.6% of male and using internet time were more than 2hours per day and major purpose of internet was game(72.9%) than female. 3. Significant negative correlation between the degree of internet addiction and the health promoting behavior(r=-0.245. p=0.000) 4. Health promoting behavior score was 138.24${\pm}$18.64 in internet non-addictive group and 126.66${\pm}$16.81 in potential risk group, 124.60${\pm}$19.85 in high risk group 5. As a result of multiple regression analysis, degree of internet addiction, school record, health status, concern to health of the students by the parents were related to the health promoting behavior and these provided predicted 21.7%.. Conclusion : The internet addiction risk group need for the health education including health promoting behavior and counseling for treatment of internet addiction.
Problem solving ability can be fostered by dealing with many different types of problems. We investigated how $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ graders who did not learn traditional algebraic methods might approach the word problems of simultaneous equations. This result reveals that the strategy of guess-and-check serves as a basis for elementary school students in solving simultaneous equations. A noticeable remark is that students used the guess-and-check strategy in various ways. Whereas some students changed a variable given in the problem step by step, others did in a sophisticated way focusing on the relation between two variables. Moreover, some students were able to write an equation which was not typical but meaningful and correct. This paper emphasizes the need of connections between pre-algebraic and algebraic solutions.
