Investigation of Galling In Forming Galvanized Steel Sheet

  • The major purpose of the present study is to evaluate the performance of various galvanized (GI) or galvannealed (GA) mild steels and AHSS in stamping applications. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of selected stamping operations was conducted to estimate the critical pressure boundary conditions that exist in practice. Using this information, laboratory tribotests, e.g. Twist Compression (TCT), Deep Drawing (DDT) and Strip Drawing (SDT) Tests, were developed to evaluate the performance of selected lubricants and die materials/coatings in forming galvanized steels of interest. The sheet materials investigated included mild steels and AHSS (e.g. DP600 GI/GA, DP780 GI/GA, TRIP780 GA and DP980 GI/GA). Experimental results showed that galvanized material resulted in more galling, while galvannealed material showed more powdering and flaking. The surface roughness and chemical composition of galvanized sheet materials affected the severity of galling under the same testing conditions, i.e. lubricants and die materials/coatings. The results of this study helped to determine the critical interface pressure that initiates lubricant failure and galling in stamping selected galvanized sheet materials. Thus, to prevent or postpone the critical interface conditions, the results of this study can be used to select the optimum combination of galvanized sheet, die material, die coating and lubricant for forming structural automotive components.

  • This paper focuses on a rheo-forming of am part fabricated by electromagnetic stirring system (EMS). This forming process take place under high pressure of high pressure die casting and thin walled casting is possible. Furthermore, the productivity is better than low pressure die casting because of shorter cycle time. The advantages of rheo-forming are performed in the semi solid state with laminar flow and the gas content is low, which makes welding possible. Therefore this research applies for arm part with EMS and has investigated the mechanical properties after T6 and T5 heat-treatment.

원심 주조된 타이타늄과 타이타늄 합금의 레이저 용접 특성 (MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF LASER-WELDED CAST TITANIUM AND TITANIUM ALLOY)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the output energy(voltage) of laser welding on the strength and properties of joint of cast titanium(CP Gr II) and titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V). Material and method : Cast titanium and its alloy rods(ISO6871) were prepared and perpendicularly cut at the center of the rod. After the cut halves were fixed in a jig, and the joints welded with a laser-welding machine at several levels of output voltage of $200V{\sim}280V$. Uncut specimens served as the non-welded control specimens The pulse duration and pulse spot size employed in this study were 10ms and 1.0mm respectively. Tensile testing was conducted at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The ultimate tensile strength(MPa) was recorded, and the data (n=6) were statistically analyzed by one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Scheffe's test at ${\alpha}$=0.05. The fracture surface of specimens investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Vickers microhardness was measured under 500g load of 15seconds with the optimal condition of output voltage 280V. Results : The results of this study were obtained as follows, 1. When the pulse duration and spot size were fixed at 10ms and 1.0mm respectively, increasing the output energy(voltage) increased UTS values and penetration depth of laser welded to titanium and titanium alloy. 2. For the commercial titanium grade II, ultimate tensile strength(665.3MPa) of the specimens laser-welded at voltage of 280V were not statistically(p>0.05) different from the non-welded control specimens (680.2MPa). 3. For the titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V), ultimate tensile strength(988.3MPa) of the specimens laser-welded at voltage of 280V were statistically(p<0.05) different from the non-welded control specimens (665.0MPa). 4. The commercial titanium grade II and titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) were Vickers microhardness values were increased in the fusion zone and there were no significant differences in base metal, heat-affected zone.

  • The inner-structure bonded(ISB) sheet metal is defined as a composite sheet metal which has middle layer of truss-structure between two skin sheets. The characteristics such as ultra-light weight, high rigidity, high strength, etc are required especially for automobile parts. The characteristic of ISB sheet metal depends on inner-structure pattern or method of bonding. Pyramid type of crimped expanded metal is used for inner-structure and both of resistance welding and adhesive bonding are applied to make a specimen. As a result of compression test, it is appeared that forming limit is 10% reduction in thickness under a load of 8kgf per unit element(one inner-structure). In case of uniaxial tensile test the non-uniform surface integrity rather than the buckling of inner-structure happened at a load of 450kgf, which indicates elongation of 7.2% and thickness reduction of 13%. The eye-inspection method was applied to examine the defects occurring on the specimen during stretch forming. In case of biaxial stretch forming only the non-uniform deformation on the surface of a skin sheet could be observed. The forming limit in stretching of ISB sheet metal with the hemi-spherical punch of 150mm in diameter was 3mm in forming depth and 5% reduction in thickness.

Development of the KSTAR Superconductor

  • The magnet system of KSTAR(korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) is consisted of 16 TF (Toroidal Field) coils and 14 PF (Poroidal Field) coils. Internal cooling CICC(Cable in Conduit Conductor) type conductor is used for both of TF and PF coil systems. The conduit material for $Nb_3Sn$ cable is Incoloy 908 and 316LN stainless-steel was used as conduit material for NbTi cable. $Nb_3Sn$ CICC is used for all TF coils and PF1-5 coils while NbTi CICC is used for PF6 and 7 coils. $Nb_3Sn$ and NbTi strands were made for KSTAR superconducting strand. They are satisfied with KSTAR superconducotr requirements. The $Nb_3Sn$ strands supplied from three companies; MELCO (Mitsubishi Electric Co.), OAS (Outokumpu Advanced Superconductor) and KAT (Kiswire Advanced Technology) were used. A special CICC jacketing system is developed for the KSTAR CICC fabrication which uses the tube-mill process consisted of forming, welding, sizing and squaring procedures. The. procedures for cabling and jacketing of CICC for TF and PF coils and their results including the geometrical specification and characteristics of strands are described.

Zn-Al-Mg 합금의 압출 시 미세조직 변화에 관한 연구 (Study on the Microstructure Evolution during Extrusion of Zn-Al-Mg alloy)

  • The use of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coatings for enhancing the corrosion resistance of steel sheets is gaining prominence over traditional Zn coatings. There is a growing demand for the development of thermal spray wires made from Zn-Al-Mg alloys, as a replacement for the existing wires produced using Al and Zn. This is particularly crucial to secure corrosion resistance and durability in the damaged areas of coated steel sheets caused by deformation and welding. This study focuses on the casting and extrusion processes of Zn-2Al-1Mg alloy for the fabrication of such spray wires and analyzes the changes in microstructure during the extrusion process. The Zn-2Al-1Mg alloy, cast in molds, was subjected to a heat treatment at 250 ℃ for 3 hours prior to extrusion. The extrusion process was carried out by heating both the material and the mold up to 300 ℃. Microstructural analysis was conducted using FE-SEM and EDS to differentiate each phase. The mechanical properties of the cast specimen were evaluated through compression tests at temperatures ranging from 200 to 300 ℃, with strain rates of 0.1 to 5 sec-1. Vickers hardness testing was utilized to assess the inhomogeneity of mechanical properties in the radial direction of the extruded material. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was employed to understand the inhomogeneity in stress and strain distribution during extrusion, which aids in understanding the impact of heterogeneous deformation on the microstructure during the process.

온도변화에 따른 진동의 무연솔더 접합부 신뢰성에 미치는 영향 (Influence of complex environment test on lead-free solder joint reliability)

  • ELV(; End of Life Vehicles)를 비롯한 최근 환경 동향은 자동차 전장 모듈에 대하여 다양한 무연 솔더 적용을 요구하고 있다. 특히 자동차 엔진룸과 트랜스미션은 가동 중 고온 및 진동의 지속적인 영향을 받기 때문에 이와 유사한 환경에서의 신뢰성 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Sn3.5Ag, Sn0.7Cu, Sn5.0Sb 솔더 조성에 대하여 복합환경 조건하에서 접합부 신뢰성을 평가하였다. 복합환경을 구현하기 위하여 $-40{\sim}150^{\circ}C$ 범위의 온도 사이클과 랜덤 진동을 동시에 인가하였으며, 진동 가속도 3G, 진동주파수는 10~1000Hz 로 설정하여 자동차 환경을 충족하였다. 복합시험의 1 cycle 은 20 시간이며, 총 120 시간의 시험 동안 진동의 영향 및 진동과 고온이 동시에 작용하였을 경우의 영향에 대해 비교하였다. 테스트 모듈 제작을 위해 450 um 의 솔더볼이 적용되었으며, 각 조성의 솔더볼을 이용하여 BGA test chip 제작하였고, 제작된 BGA test chip 은 다시 daisy chain PCB 위에 실장 및 리플로우 공정을 통해 접합되었다. 테스트 동안 In-situ 로 저항의 변화를 관찰하여 파단의 유무를 판단하였고 전자주사현미경을 통해 파괴 기전을 평가하였다. 복합시험 시간에 따른 전단강도를 측정하였으며, 각 조성에 대하여 상이한 전단강도 변화를 관찰하였다. 계면 IMC 형상은 전단강도 변화에 영향을 주었으며, 특히 높은 온도가 IMC 성장을 촉진시켜 전단강도 감소에 영향을 주었다. 본 복합환경 시험 조건에서는 Sn0.7Cu 가 가장 안정적이었으며, 파단면을 관찰한 결과 연성파괴 모드가 관찰되었다.

Numerical analysis of the combined aging and fillet effect of the adhesive on the mechanical behavior of a single lap joint of type Aluminum/Aluminum

  • Bonded joints have proven their performance against conventional joining processes such as welding, riveting and bolting. The single-lap joint is the most widely used to characterize adhesive joints in tensile-shear loadings. However, the high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint due to the non-linearity of the applied loads generate a bending moment in the joint, resulting in high stresses at the adhesive edges. Geometric optimization of the bonded joint to reduce this high stress concentration prompted various researchers to perform geometric modifications of the adhesive and adherends at their free edges. Modifying both edges of the adhesive (spew) and the adherends (bevel) has proven to be an effective solution to reduce stresses at both edges and improve stress transfer at the inner part of the adhesive layer. The majority of research aimed at improving the geometry of the plate and adhesive edges has not considered the effect of temperature and water absorption in evaluating the strength of the joint. The objective of this work is to analyze, by the finite element method, the stress distribution in an adhesive joint between two 2024-T3 aluminum plates. The effects of the adhesive fillet and adherend bevel on the bonded joint stresses were taken into account. On the other hand, degradation of the mechanical properties of the adhesive following its exposure to moisture and temperature was found. The results clearly showed that the modification of the edges of the adhesive and of the bonding agent have an important role in the durability of the bond. Although the modification of the adhesive and bonding edges significantly improves the joint strength, the simultaneous exposure of the joint to temperature and moisture generates high stress concentrations in the adhesive joint that, in most cases, can easily reach the failure point of the material even at low applied stresses.

부산지역 조선업 용접공들의 진폐증에 관한 역학적 조사연구 (The Epidemiologial Study on the Welders' Pneumoconiosis among Shipyard Welders in Pusan Area)

  • Authors studied on the prevalence of 94 cases of pneumoconiosis who were found out through the screening test on 1,062 workers engaged in welding process at 36 shipyard in Pusan area from March 1st, 1986 to November 30th, 1986. The result were as follows; 1. Dust concentration was measured $4.49{\pm}0.54mg/m^3$ in the small scale shipyard while it was $6.25{\pm}1.08mg/m^3$ in the large one. 2. The prevalence of welder's lung was 8.9% (male:8.5%, female:12.0%) and this is consist of 4.9% suspected pneumoconiosis and 4.0% pneumoconiosis more than category 1/0. 3. The prevalence was significantly increased according to the duration of dust exposure(p<0.05), and it showed the increasing tendency by the age group. 4. The prevalence was significantly higher in the large scale shipyard than is the small scale one(p<0.01). 5. The type and shape of opacities were 71.4% of p type and 28.6% of q type, however no pneumoconiosis with r type observed in this study. 6. The main subjective symptoms were the sputum(29.8%), coughing(25.5%), shortness of breath(20.2%), fatique(6.4%), and chest pain(5.3%). In other hand, 57.4% of pneumoconiosis were asymptomatic. 7. The prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis was radiologically 1.7% in all subjects including 5.3% in pneumoconiosis and 1.3% in no pneumoconiosis(p<0.01).
