Purpose: Rice bran is a byproduct of the hulling of rice and contains a variety of bioactive components. Various studies have reported on the antioxidative, anticancer, immune-enhancing, and hypocholesterolemic effects of rice bran. However, few studies about the physiological activity of stabilized rice bran supplement on dietary intake of sugars is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of stabilized rice bran supplement on blood glucose in C57BL/6 mice fed a high sucrose diet. Methods: Animals were randomly divided into three groups respectively, and were fed a normal diet (ND group), a high sucrose diet (HSD group) or a high sucrose diet containing 20% stabilized rice bran (HSD-SRB group) for 12 weeks. Results: In the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), after seven weeks of feeding on the experimental diets, a significantly lower result was observed for HSD-SRB than for HSD at 30 and 60 minutes after oral administration in glucose solution (2 g/kg body weight). The incremental area under the curve (IAUC) of HSD-SRB was significantly lower than that of HSD. After 12 weeks, fasting blood glucose level of HSD-SRB was significantly lower than that of HSD. No significant difference in the serum insulin level was observed between HSD and HSD-SRB. However, HOMA-IR was significantly decreased in HSD-SRB compared to HSD. In addition, HOMA ${\beta}$-cell was significantly increased in HSD-SRB compared to HSD. Triglyceride in liver of HSD-SRB was significantly lower than that of HSD. Conclusion: Feeding diets containing 20% rice bran improved insulin resistance and insulin secretion by decreasing triglyceride in liver. Thus, rice bran has a positive effect on glycemic control. In addition, the results are expected to be utilized as a basis for human study and development of food products with added rice bran.
The objective of this study was the development of a discrimination model for the cultivational origin of paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji using near infrared (NIR) and mid infrared (MIR) spectroscopy combined with partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Paper mulberry bast fiber was purchased in 10 different regions of Korea, and used to make Hanji. PLS-DA was performed using pre-treated FT-NIR and FT-MIR spectral data for paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji. PLS-DA of paper mulberry bast fiber and Hanji samples, using FT-NIR spectral data, showed 100 % performance in cross validation and the confusion matrix (accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity). The discrimination models showed four regional groups which demonstrated clearer separation and much superior score plots in the NIR spectral data-based model than in the MIR spectral data-based model. Furthermore, the discrimination model based on the NIR spectral data of paper mulberry bast fiber had highly similar score morphology to that of the discrimination model based on the NIR spectral data of Hanji.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different types of exercise training on neurodegeneration and cognitive function in mice with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Thirty-six male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to the control (CO, n = 9) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, n = 27) groups. The IGT group consumed 45% high fat diet for 4 weeks and received 40 mg/kg of streptozotocin twice in the lower abdomen to induce IGT. After the IGT induction period, the IGT group was subdivided into IGT + sedentary (IGT, n = 9), IGT + endurance exercise (IGTE, n = 9), and IGT + resistance exercise (IGTR, n = 9). The IGTE and IGTR groups performed treadmill and ladder climbing exercises 5 times per week for 8 weeks, respectively. Fasting glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels were significantly higher in IGT group than in CO, IGTE, and IGTR groups (p < 0.05). HOMA-IR was significantly higher in IGT group than CO group (p < 0.05). Hippocampal catalase (CAT) was significantly lower in IGT group than in CO group (p < 0.05), while beta-amyloid ($A{\beta}$) was significantly higher in IGT group than in CO group (p < 0.05). Hippocampal tau was significantly higher in IGT group than in CO, IGTE, and IGTR groups (p < 0.05). The Y-maze test performance for cognitive function was significantly lower in IGT group than in CO, IGTE, and IGTR groups (p <0.05). These results suggest that IGT induces neurodegeneration and negatively affects cognitive function, while regular exercise may be effective in alleviating neurodegeneration and cognitive decline regardless of exercise type.
GEO-KOMPSAT-2A AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) radiometric calibration evaluation is an essential element not only for functional and performance verification of the payload but for the quality of the sensor data. AMI instrument consists of six reflective channels and ten thermal infrared ones. One of the key parameters representing radiometric properties of the sensor is a SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) for the reflective channels and a NEdT (Noise Equivalent delta Temperature) for the IR ones respectively. Other important radiometric calibration parameters are a dynamic range and a gain value related with the responsivity of detectors. To verify major radiometric calibration performance of AMI, an offline radiometric evaluation tool was developed separately with a real-time AMI data processing system. Using the evaluation tool, validation activities were carried out during the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A In-Orbit Test period. The results from the evaluation tool were cross checked with those of the HARRIS, which is the AMI payload vendor. AMI radiometric evaluation activities were conducted through three phases for both sides (Side 1 and Side 2) of AMI payload. Results showed that performances of the key radiometric properties were outstanding with respect to the radiometric requirements of the payload. The effectiveness of the evaluation tool was verified as well.
Background: Ginsenoside Rb1 (GRb1) is capable of regulating lipid and glucose metabolism through its action on adipocytes. However, the beneficial role of GRb1-induced up-regulation of adiponectin in liver steatosis remains unelucidated. Thus, we tested whether GRb1 ameliorates liver steatosis and insulin resistance by promoting the expression of adiponectin. Methods: 3T3-L1 adipocytes and hepatocytes were used to investigate GRb1's action on adiponectin expression and triglyceride (TG) accumulation. Wild type (WT) mice and adiponectin knockout (KO) mice fed high fat diet were treated with GRb1 for 2 weeks. Hepatic fat accumulation and function as well as insulin sensitivity was measured. The activation of AMPK was also detected in the liver and hepatocytes. Results: GRb1 reversed the reduction of adiponectin secretion in adipocytes. The conditioned medium (CM) from adipocytes treated with GRb1 reduced TG accumulation in hepatocytes, which was partly attenuated by the adiponectin antibody. In the KO mice, the GRb1-induced significant decrease of TG content, ALT and AST was blocked by the deletion of adiponectin. The elevations of GRb1-induced insulin sensitivity indicated by OGTT, ITT and HOMA-IR were also weakened in the KO mice. The CM treatment significantly enhanced the phosphorylation of AMPK in hepatocytes, but not GRb1 treatment. Likewise, the phosphorylation of AMPK in liver of the WT mice was increased by GRb1, but not in the KO mice. Conclusions: The up-regulation of adiponectin by GRb1 contributes to the amelioration of liver steatosis and insulin resistance, which further elucidates a new mechanism underlying the beneficial effects of GRb1 on obesity.
We have investigated the performance improvement of grease by synthesizing calcium sulfonate grease as an alternative to lithium grease, which is widely used globally. Since the composition ratio of the grease, when manufactured, is usually 50% base oil and 50% thickener, using grease as a lubricant in a cryogenic environment is not encouraged due to its inferior low-temperature performance. In this study, we have synthesized three types of calcium sulfonate grease with paraffin oil and PAO-based base oil and thickener. Furthermore, lithium grease was synthesized via saponification with PAO-based base oil, lithium hydroxide, 12-hydroxystearic acid, and sebacic acid. We have measured low-temperature characteristics using a rheometer and low-temperature torque meter, and tribology characteristics were obtained using a four-ball lubricant tester and schwingung reibung verschleiß (SRV). As a result, the flow point of the calcium sulfonate grease synthesized with a PAO-based base oil and thickener was found to be -40℃, overcoming the existing calcium sulfonate grease's low-temperature limitation. Moreover, the synthesized calcium sulfonate grease showed low-temperature performance similar to that of lithium grease synthesized with PAO base oil, but superior anti-wear, extreme pressure, coefficient of friction, heat resistance, adhesion, and corrosion resistance. It is thus expected to commercially replace the existing lithium grease.
It is well known that any kind of physical activity can be a useful nonpharmacological tool in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including antihypertension. There is also strong evidence that suggests that people with cardiovascular disease are less active than healthy people. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a 12-week walking exercise intervention program on body composition, insulin resistance, and blood pressure in obese elderly women with stage 1 hypertension. The walking exercise program was performed for 50 min, three times per week. The intensity progressively increased: RPE 11 to 12, 40-50% HRR, for weeks 1-4; RPE 12 to 13, 50-60% HRR, for weeks 5-8; and RPE 13 to 14, 60-65% HRR, for weeks 9-12. The subjects were 20 obese elderly women with stage 1 hypertension (SBP: 140-159 mmHg or DBP: 90-99 mmHg). Half were placed in the walking exercise group (EX, n=10), and half were placed in the control group (CON, n=10). At the end of the program, the EX group members had significantly lower body fat, insulin resistance, and SBP compared to the CON group members. These results suggest that undertaking a 12-week walking exercise program improves body fat, insulin resistance, and SBP, which may improve the incidence of metabolic disease in elderly obese women with stage 1 hypertension.
Cellobiose dehydrogenases (CDHs) are a group of enzymes belonging to the hemoflavoenzyme group, which are mostly found in fungi. They play an important role in the production of acid sugar. In this research, CDH annotated from the actinobacterium Cellulomonas palmilytica EW123 (CpCDH) was cloned and characterized. The CpCDH exhibited a domain architecture resembling class-I CDH found in Basidiomycota. The cytochrome c and flavin-containing dehydrogenase domains in CpCDH showed an extra-long evolutionary distance compared to fungal CDH. The amino acid sequence of CpCDH revealed conservative catalytic amino acids and a distinct flavin adenine dinucleotide region specific to CDH, setting it apart from closely related sequences. The physicochemical properties of CpCDH displayed optimal pH conditions similar to those of CDHs but differed in terms of optimal temperature. The CpCDH displayed excellent enzymatic activity at low temperatures (below 30℃), unlike other CDHs. Moreover, CpCDH showed the highest substrate specificity for disaccharides such as cellobiose and lactose, which contain a glucose molecule at the non-reducing end. The catalytic efficiency of CpCDH for cellobiose and lactose were 2.05 × 105 and 9.06 × 104 (M-1 s-1), respectively. The result from the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra confirmed the presence of cellobionic and lactobionic acids as the oxidative products of CpCDH. This study establishes CpCDH as a novel and attractive bacterial CDH, representing the first report of its kind in the Cellulomonas genus.
It was proved that cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage was affected by water temperature and nitrogen application from the spikelet differentiation stage to the young microspore stage, and this mechanism could be explained in the point of view of pollen developmental physiology. The cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage was severely affected by water temperature (Previous water temperature) and nitrogen application(Previous nitrogen application) from the spikelet differentiation stage to the spikelet differentiation stage. Although the duration is only 10 days or so from the spikelet differentiation stage to the young microspore stage, these days are very important period to confirm the cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage. The higher previous water temperature up to $25^{\circ}C$ and the deeper previous water depth up to 10cm caused the more cold tolerance of rice plants. Water irrigation of 10cm before the cretical stage showed lower cool injury than that of water irrigation of 20cm during the critical stage. The preventive effect of cool injury by combined treatment of the deep water irrigation before and during the critical stage was not additive but synergistic. The cold tolerance of rice plants grown in previous heavy nitrogen level was rapidly decreased when nitrogen content of leaf blade at the young microspore stage was excessive over the critical nitrogen level. Nitrogen content of leaf blade at the changing point of cold tolerance was estimated as about 3.5% for Japonica cultivars and about 2.5% for Indica x Japonica cultuvars. It is considered that these critical nitrogen contents of leaf blade can be used as a index of the safe critical nitrogen level for the preventive practices to cool injury. It was summarized that increase of engorged pollens per anther by high previous water temperature resulted from the increase of number of differentiated microspores per anther, otherwise, the increase of engorged pollens by the decrease of previous nitrogen level was caused by the decrease of the number of aborted microspores per anther.

Purpose : To evaluate possible acute toxicity and early response of concurrent radiation therapy and low dose daily cisplatin as a radiosensitizer in patients with locally advanced uterine cervical carcinomas. Materials and Method : From December 1996 to January 1999, 38 previously untreated Patients with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix (from stage IIB to stage IIIB) were treated at Inha University Hospital. All patients underwent standard pretreatment staging Procedures after the initial evaluation by gynecologists and radiation oncologists. Sixteen Patients with huge cervical mass (>4 cm) were submitted to the group treated with concurrent radiation therapy and low dose daily cisplatin while the remainder was treated with radiation therapy alone. Radiation therapy consisted of 4500 cGy external beam irradiation to whole pelvis (midline block after 3000 cGy), 900$\~$1000 cGy boost to involved parametrium, and high dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy (a total dose of 3000$\~$3500 cGy/500 cGy per fraction to point A, twice per week). In the group treated with low dose cisplatin concurrently, 10 mg of daily intravenous cisplatin was given from the 1st day of radiation therapy to the 20th day of radiation therapy. Acute toxicity was measured according to expanded common toxicity criteria of the NCI (C) Clinical Trials. Early response data were analyzed at minimum 4 weeks' follow-up after completion of the treatment protocol. Results: Hematolgic toxici쇼 was more prominent in patients treated with radiation therapy and cisplatin. Six of 16 patients (37.5$\~$) treated with radiation therapy and cisplatin and one of 22 patients (4.5$\~$) treated with radiation therapy alone experienced grade 3 leukopenia. In Fisher's exact test, there was statistically significant difference between two groups regarding leukopenia (P=0.030). There was no apparent difference in the frequency of gastrointestinal and genitourinary toxicity between two groups (P=0.066). Three of 16 patients (18.7$\~$) treated with radiation therapy and cisplatin and two of 22 patients (9.1$\~$) treated with radiation therapy alone experienced more than 5 kg weight loss during the treatment. There was no statistically significant difference on weight loss between two groups (P=0.63). Two patients on each group were not evaluable for the early response because of incomplete treatment. The complete response rate at four weeks' follow-up was 80$\~$(16/20) for the radiation therapy alone group and 78$\~$ (11/14) for the radiation therapy and cisplatin group. There was no statistically significant difference in early response between two treatment groups (P=0.126). Conclusion : This study led to the conclusion that the hematologic toxicity from the treatment with concurrent radiation therapy and low dose daily cisplatin seems to be more prominent than that from the treatment of radiation therapy alone. There was no grade 4 hematologic toxicity or mortality in both groups. The hematologic toxicity in both treatment groups seems to be well managable modically. Since the risk factors were not balanced between two treatment groups, the direct comparison of early response of both groups was not possible. However, preliminary results regarding early response for patients with bulky cervical tumor mass treated with radiation therapy and low dose daily cisplatin was encouraging. Longer follow-up is necessary to evaluate the survival data. A phase III study is needed to evaluate the efficacy of concurrent daily low dose cisplatin with radiation therapy in bulky cervical cancer.
