The widespread damage to steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) in past major earthquakes have underscored the need to understand the nonlinear inelastic behaviour of such systems. To assess the seismic performance of steel MRF, it is essential to model the nonlinear force-deformation behaviour of beam to column joints. To determine the extent of inelasticity in a beam to column joint, nonlinear finite element analysis is generally carried out, which is computationally involved and demanding. In order to obviate the need of such elaborate analyses, a simplistic method to predict the force-deformation behaviour is required. In this study, a simple, mechanics driven, hand calculation method is proposed to obtain the forcedeformation behaviour of strong axis beam to column moment joints. The force-deformation behaviour for twenty-five interior and exterior beam to column joints, having column to beam strength ratios ranging from 1.2 to 10.99 and 2.4 to 22, respectively, have been obtained. The force-deformation behaviour predicted using the proposed method is compared with the results of finite element analyses. The results show that the proposed method predicts the force-deformation behaviour fairly accurately, with much lesser computational effort. Further the proposed method has been used to conduct Nonlinear Dynamic Time History Analyses of two benchmark frames; close correspondence of results obtained with published results establishes the usefulness and computational accuracy of the method.
Understanding the interactions between earth materials and fluids is essential for studying the diverse geological processes in the Earth's surface and interior. In order to better understand the interactions between earth materials and fluids, we explore the effect of specific surface area and porosity on structural parameters of pore structures. We obtained 3D pore structures, using random packing simulations of porous media composed of single sized spheres with varying the particle size and porosity, and then we analyzed configurational entropy for 2D cross sections of porous media and cube counting fractal dimension for 3D porous networks. The results of the configurational entropy analysis show that the entropy length decreases from 0.8 to 0.2 with increasing specific surface area from 2.4 to $8.3mm^2/mm^3$, and the maximum configurational entropy increases from 0.94 to 0.99 with increasing porosity from 0.33 to 0.46. On the basis of the strong correlation between the liquid volume fraction (i.e., porosity) and configurational entropy, we suggest that elastic properties and viscosity of mantle melts can be expressed using configurational entropy. The results of the cube counting fractal dimension analysis show that cube counting fractal dimension increases with increasing porosity at constant specific surface area, and increases from 2.65 to 2.98 with increasing specific surface area from 2.4 to $8.3mm^2/mm^3$. On the basis of the strong correlation among cube counting fractal dimension, specific surface area, and porosity, we suggest that seismic wave attenuation and structural disorder in fluid-rock-melt composites can be described using cube counting fractal dimension.
The objective of paper is to carry out a comparative Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) of two KOGAS tank designs using a fault tree methodology, a standard 'Full Containment' tank and a 'Membrane' tank. For the membrane tank, both the initial KOGAS design and 4 modified KOGAS designs have been assessed, giving six separate cases. In this paper, the frequencies of releases are quantified using a fault tree approach. For clarity in the analysis, and to ensure consistency, all cases have been quantified using the same fault tree. Logic within the fault tree is used to select each of the cases. Full quantification of risks is often difficult, owing to a lack of relevant failure data, but the aim of this study has been to be as quantitative as possible, with full transparency of failure information. The most significant general cause of external LNG leaks is predicted to be a seismic event, which has been quantified nominally. 4modified KOGAS desiens to Prevent damage of bottom membrane panels that was shown in preparatory estimation could quantitively confirm safety improvement. According to result, the predicted frequencies of an external LNG leak for the full containment and modified membrane tanks are very similar, failures due to dropped pumps are predicted to be significantly greater for the membrane tank with thickened plate than for the full containment tank.
In this study, our purpose is to develop a technique to discriminate artificial explosions from local microearthquakes on the basis of time-frequency domain. To obtain spectral features of artificial explosions and microearthquakes, we used 3-d spectrograms(frequency, time and amplitude) because this is a useful tool to study the frequency content of entire seismic waveforms observed at local and regional distances (e. g., Kim et al., 1994). P and S waves from quarry blasts show that frequency content of dominant amplitude appeared above 10 Hz and Rg phases that are observed at near distance ranges. But P and S waves from microearthquakes have more broad frequency content as well as below 10 Hz. And for discrimination, Pg/Lg spectral ratio is performed below 10 Hz. In order to select time windows we computed group velocity using multiple filter method(MFM) and removed free surface effects from all 3-components data for improving on data quality. Next step, we computed Fast-Fourier transform, and a log average spectral amplitude over seven frequency bands : 0.5 to 3, 2 to 4, 3 to 5, 4 to 6, 5 to 7, 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 Hz. The best separation is observed from 6 to 8 Hz.
The purpose of this research is to evaluate the capacity of strength and plastic deformation of those members, and provide experimental data on the seismic behavior of these members as a basis for developing guidelines for designing seismically resistant concrete-filled steel tubular columns. Eighteen cantilever-type specimens were tested under constant axial load and cyclically lateral load as models of bottom columns in high-rise building. The parameters studied in the test program included, are width-thickness ratio of steel tube, slenderness ratio (Lo/D) and axial force ratio. From the test results, the effects of parameters on the strength, the deformation capacity, energy absorption capacity are discussed. The specimen flexural capacity under combined axial and lateral loading was found to be almost accurately predicted by criteria AIJ and AISC-LRFD providing conservative results. Therefore KSSC for encased composite column can be applied to the concrete filled column if composite section and elastic modulus are modified according to AIJ and AISC-LRFD. Finally, the proposed flexural capacity considering confinement effects is a food agreement on the tests results.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the material characteristics of SHN400 steel, which is suitable as a steel material for building structures, using the experimental approach. For this purpose, the chemical composition test, tensile test, macro test, micro test, and charpy notch impact test were conducted with specimens taken from the highest, thickest, and commonly used H-beams for girder or beam members. Each test was conducted under the Korean Standard(KS) test conditions. All the test results satisfied the requirements of KS (KS D 3866) and the steel material for seismic design. The carbon equivalent value (Ceq), which is related to weldability, and the yield ratio, which is related to inelastic behavior, showed especially good results. Thus, SHN400 is definitely suitable as the steel material for building structures.

In a performance-based design, the structural safety is estimated from pre- defined damage states and corresponding damage indices. Both damage states and damage indices are well defined for above-ground structures, but very limited studies have been performed on underground structures. In this study, we define the damage states and damage indices of a cut-and-cover box tunnel which is one of typical structures used in metro systems, under a seismic excitation from a series of inelastic frame analyses. Three damage states are defined in terms of the number of plastic hinges that develop within the structure. The damage index is defined as the ratio of the elastic moment to the yield moment. Through use of the proposed index, the inelastic behavior and failure mechanism of box tunnels can be simulated and predicted through elastic analysis. In addition, the damage indices are linked to free-field shear strains. Because the free-field shear strain can be easily calculated from a 1D site response analysis, the proposed method can be readily used in practice. Further studies are needed to determine the range of shear strains and associated uncertainties for various types of tunnels and site profiles. However, the inter-linked platform of damage state - damage index - shear wave velocity - shear strain provides a novel approach for estimating the inelastic response of tunnels, and can be widely used in practice for seismic designs.

The present study demonstrates the application of seismic petrophysics and amplitude versus angle (AVA) forward modeling to identify the reservoir fluids, discriminate their saturation levels and natural gas composition. Two case studies of the Lumshiwal Formation (mainly sandstone) of the Lower Cretaceous age have been studied from the Kohat Sub-basin and the Middle Indus Basin of Pakistan. The conventional angle-dependent reflection amplitudes such as P converted P ($R_{PP}$) and S ($R_{PS}$), S converted S ($R_{SS}$) and P ($R_{SP}$) and newly developed AVA attributes (${\Delta}R_{PP}$, ${\Delta}R_{PS}$, ${\Delta}R_{SS}$ and ${\Delta}R_{SP}$) are analyzed at different gas saturation levels in the reservoir rock. These attributes are generated by taking the differences between the water wet reflection coefficient and the reflection coefficient at unknown gas saturation. Intercept (A) and gradient (B) attributes are also computed and cross-plotted at different gas compositions and gas/water scenarios to define the AVO class of reservoir sands. The numerical simulation reveals that ${\Delta}R_{PP}$, ${\Delta}R_{PS}$, ${\Delta}R_{SS}$ and ${\Delta}R_{SP}$ are good indicators and able to distinguish low and high gas saturation with a high level of confidence as compared to conventional reflection amplitudes such as P-P, P-S, S-S and S-P. In A-B cross-plots, the gas lines move towards the fluid (wet) lines as the proportion of heavier gases increase in the Lumshiwal Sands. Because of the upper contacts with different sedimentary rocks (Shale/Limestone) in both wells, the same reservoir sand exhibits different response similar to AVO classes like class I and class IV. This study will help to analyze gas sands by using amplitude based attributes as direct gas indicators in further gas drilling wells in clastic successions.
This paper presents the two and three -dimensional stability analysis of nonhom- ogeneous, c-o soil slopes. Potential failure surface is assumed as a logspiral curve refracted in boundaries of layers. In 3-D analysis, rotational soil mass is assumed with a cylindroid central part terminated with plane ends. Seismic force is considered by sesmic intensity. The program developed in this study is compared with the program PCSTABLS. The ratio of three-dimensional minimum factor of safety to two-dimensional case is examined and factor of safety changes are showed for the ratio of cylindroid length to slope height and numbers of slice. On such bases the following conclusions may by made : (1) The program developed in this program is less conservative than the program PCSTABLS. (2) The value of F2 of this study shows the larger differences than that of PCSTABLS with increasing friction angle (3) Factors of safety computed for 3-D geometry differ considerablely from ordinary 2-D factors of safety. Since Fb/F2 exceeds unity, three -dimensional effects tend to increase the factor of safety. (4) As the ratio of three - dimensional failure width of slope height, b/H increase, the value of Fb/Ff decreases and approaches 1.0 when bye is 14. (5) In calculating the factor of safety using the developed program the number of slices is suitable with the ranges of 30-40

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institutes has been developing the SMART (System integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor), an environment-friendly nuclear reactor for the generation of electricity and to perform desalination. SMART reactors can be exposed to various external and internal loads caused by seismic and coolant flows. The CRDM(control rod drive mechanism), one of structures of the SMART, is a component which is adjusting inserting amount of a control rod, controlling output of reactor power and in an emergency situation, inserting a control rod to stop the reactor. The purpose of this research is performing the analysis of dynamic characteristic to ensure safety and integrity of structure of CRDM. This paper presents two FE-models, 3-D solid model and simplified Beam model of the CRDM in the coolant, and then compared the results of the dynamic characteristic about the two FE-models using a commercial Finite Element tool, ABAQUS CAE V6.8 and ANSYS V12. Beam 4 and beam 188 of simplified-model were also compared each other. And simplified model is updated for accuracy compare to 3-D solid.
