  • This paper proposes an open-loop clock recovery circuit (CRC) using two high-Q dielectric resonator (DR) filters for 39.8 Gb/s and 42.8 Gb/s dual-mode operation. The DR filters are fabricated to obtain high Q-values of approximately 950 at the 40 GHz band and to suppress spurious resonant modes up to 45 GHz. The CRC is implemented in a compact module by integrating the DR filters with other circuits in the CRC. The peak-to-peak and RMS jitter values of the clock signals recovered from 39.8 Gb/s and 42.8 Gb/s pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) data with a word length of $2^{31}-1$ are less than 2.0 ps and 0.3 ps, respectively. The peak-to-peak amplitudes of the recovered clocks are quite stable and within the range of 2.5 V to 2.7 V, even when the input data signals vary from 150 mV to 500 mV. Error-free operation of the 40 Gb/s-class optical receiver with the dual-mode CRC is confirmed at both 39.8 Gb/s and 42.8 Gb/s data rates.

  • In this letter, we will evaluate the performance degradation of a 40 km high-speed (40 Gb/s) optical system, induced by optical fiber variations of the chromatic dispersion induced by temperature changes. The chromatic dispersion temperature sensitivity will be estimated based on the signal quality parameters.

  • In this paper, we numerically induced the optimal values of optical phase conjugator (OPC) position and dispersion coefficients of fiber sections, which can improve the bit error rate (BER) and design the adaptive WDM transmission system, as a function of the extinction ratio (ER) of 10 dB and 20 dB in $16{\times}40$ Gb/s WDM transmission system. It is confirmed that these optimal parameter values for effectively compensating overall WDM channels are dependence on the extinction ratio of signals as well as modulation format, transmitted channel numbers, which were investigated in previous researches. It is also confirmed that ER of 20 dB has the advantage of designing flexible WDM systems using optimal parameters than ER of 10 dB.

  • We investigated the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance for 40Gb/s non-return to zero (NRZ), duobinary NRZ, return to zero (RZ), carrier-suppressed RZ (CS-RZ), and duobinary-carrier-suppressed RZ (DCS-RZ) modulation formats with a forward error correction (FEC) coding. The power penalty has been calculated as a measure of the system performance due to PMD. After comparison of the PMD tolerance of various modulation formats, our results suggest that RZ signals have the best tolerance against the effect of first-order PMD only. The duobinary NRZ modulation format is most resilient to PMD when both first- and second-order PMD are considered. However, the duobinary NRZ modulation format is the most sensitive to the incident angle of the input signal to a fiber axis in the presence of first- and second-order PMD, leading to incident angle-dependent power penalty. The coding gain by FEC can cope with the power penalties induced by first- and second-order PMD up to a DGD value of 16ps.

  • This paper proposes a cost-effective hybrid-type power budget extender (PBEx) that can provide a high power budget of over 45 dB in an asymmetric 10-Gb/s Ethernet passive optical network (10/1G-EPON). The hybrid-type 10/1G-EPON PBEx comprises a central office terminal (COT) and remote terminal (RT) module supporting four channels and uses a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) technology between the COT and RT for a reduction of fiber cost and efficient access network design. The proposed 10/1G-EPON PBEx can provide over a 40-km reach and 128-way split per CWDM wavelength with no modification of a legacy 10/1G-EPON system and can satisfy the error-free service in $10^{10}$ packet transmission.

  • A 10 Gb/s limiting amplifier IC with the emitter area of $1.5{\times}10{\mu}m^2$ for optical transmission system was designed and fabricated with a AIGaAs/GaAs HBTs technology. In this stud)', we evaluated fine pitch bump using WL-CSP (Wafer Level-Chip Scale Packaging) instead of conventional wire bonding for interconnection. For this we developed WL-CSP process and formed fine pitch solder bump with the $40{\mu}m$ diameter and $100{\mu}m$ pitch on bonding pad. To study the effect of WL-CSP, electrical performance was measured and analyzed in wafer and package module using WL-CSP. In a package module, clear and wide eye diagram openings were observed and the riselfall times were about 100ps, and the output" oltage swing was limited to $600mV_{p-p}$ with input voltage ranging from 50 to 500m V. The Small signal gains in wafer and package module were 15.56dB and 14.99dB respectively. It was found that the difference of small signal gain in wafer and package module was less then 0.57dB up to 10GHz and the characteristics of return loss was improved by 5dB in package module. This is due to the short interconnection length by WL-CSP. So, WL-CSP process can be used for millimeter wave GaAs MMIC with the fine pitch pad.
