Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.
3Y-TZP/SUS316 Functionally Graded Material (FGM) was fabricated by slip casting method. Alumina mold was used to overcome problems of gypsum mold in slip casting process, and the optimal dispersion con-ditions of 3Y-TZP/SUS316 binary slurries was determined using electrokinetic sonic amplitude and a viscometer, and observing sedimentation behavior. The properties of the specimens casted by gypsum mold and alumina mold were compared in terms of changes in shrinkage rate, drying and sintering conditions, and microstructure. It was found that the specimens obtaine from the alumina mold showed a clean surface, easier thickness control of each layer, and higher productivity. Especially, no degradation was observed in the SUS316 prepared using alumina mold. Thus it is desirable to use porous alumina mold rather than gyp-sum mold for the slip casting of 3Y-TZP/SUS316-FGM.

The effect of monoclinic $ZrO_2$(pure) and tetragonal $ZrO_2$ containing 5.35wt% $Y_2$$O_3$(Y-TZP) addition on the mechanical properties and thermal shock resistance of $Al_2$$O_3$ ceramic were investigated. The addition of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP increased sintering density of $Al_2$$O_3$. The vickers hardness increased with increasing the volume fraction of Y-TZP going through a maximum at 20wt%. The hardness of the specimens was found to be depend on the sintering density. With increasing the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$(m) and Y-TZP, the fracture toughness of the composite is increased. This result may be taken as evidence that toughening of ${Al_2}{O_3}$ can also be achieved by the transformation toughening and microcrack toughening of $ZrO_2$. The property of the& shock for ${Al_2}{O_3}$-$ZrO_2$ composites was improved by increasing the volume fraction of monoclinic $ZrO_2$(pure).Grain size increased with increasing the volume fraction of $ZrO_2$.
The effect of aliovalent dopents, $Nb_3O_5$ and MnO, on the grain growth kinetics of 12 mol% ceria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Ce-TZP) was studied. All specimens were sintered at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes prior to annealing at different temperatures to study grain growth kinetics. Grain growth kinetics of Ce-TZP and 1 mol% $Nb_2O_5$ doped Ce-TZP (Ce-TZP/$Nb_3O_5$) during annealing at 1475, 1550, and $1600^{\circ}C$ adequately matched with square law $(D^2-D_\;o^2=k_at)$. However, grain growth in 1 mol% MnO suppressed grain growth in Ce-TZP by drag force exerted by $Mn^{+2}$ ions which segregated strongly to the positively-charged grain boundaries of Ce-TZP, $Nb_2O_5$ enhanced grain growth by increasing the concentration of vacancies of $Zr^{+4}$ ion and $Ce^{+4}$ ions. Surface analysis with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the segregation of Mn+2 ions to grain boundaries. The kinetics of grain growth obtained in the base Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZPs with the aliovalent dopants were examined in the context of impurity drag effect and space charge effect.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the connector configuration on the fracture load in conventional and translucent zirconia of three-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six different three-unit FDPs were prepared (n = 6) from three types of zirconia (3Y-TZP (Katana ML®), 4Y-TZP (Katana STML®), and 5Y-TZP (Katana UTML®)) in combination with two connector configurations (4 × 2.25, 3 × 3 mm). The CoCr master models were scanned, and the FDPs were designed and fabricated using CAD-CAM. The FDPs were cemented on the metal model and then loaded with a UTM at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis (α = .05). RESULTS. Fracture loads of 3Y-TZP (2740.6 ± 469.2 and 2718.7 ± 339.0 N for size 4 × 2.25 mm and 3 × 3 mm, respectively) were significantly higher than those of 4Y-TZP (1868.3 ± 281.6 and 1663.6 ± 372.7 N, respectively) and 5Y-TZP (1588.0 ± 255.0 and 1559.1 ± 110.0 N, respectively) (P < .05). No significant difference was found between fracture loads of 4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP (P > .05). The connector configuration within 9 mm2 was found to have no effect on the fracture loads on all three types of zirconia (P > .05). CONCLUSION. Fracture loads of three-unit FDPs were affected by the type of zirconia. The fracture loads of conventional zirconia were higher than those of translucent zirconia. However, it was not affected by the connector configuration when the connector had a cross-sectional area of 9 mm2.
Influence of applied electric field on the low temperature degradation of 3 mol% YaO3 stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals(3Y-TZP) was investigated using X-ray diffractometry of specimens aged under the dc field of 1.1 kV/mm in silicone oil both of 12$0^{\circ}C$-21$0^{\circ}C$. After the aging, the tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation was observed only on the specimen surface of 3Y-TZP faced to the anode. This indicated that the surface was overcrowded with oxygen ions as a result of diffusion of oxygen vacancies toward the cathode-sided surface. To elucidate an influence of the applying time of the electric field on the extent of the degradation of 3Y-TZP in air, specimens were aged fore 0-2 hours under the electric field in the oil bath of 12$0^{\circ}C$ and then subsequently aged for 3h at 22$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The longer the specimens were aged under the field, the more extensive the transformation to the monoclinic phase was on the specimen surface faced to the cathode, probably originated from a high diffusion rate of oxygen ions due to a steep oxygen vacancy concentration gradient.
To improve the low resistance of ceramics to tensile stress, many techniques, for introducing and retaining surface compressive stress have been suggested. In present work, in order to introduce the compressive stress on the surface of TZP ceramics TZP-Al2O3 composites were made with infiltration technique. Highly porous 3Y-TZP pre-sintered specimens were submerged in AlOOH(boehmite) sol and the sol penetrated into them through open pore channels with moderate depth after that specimens were sintered. It was known that controlling the number of infiltration time can vary the amount of Al2O3 phase and the fraction of alumina at surface reached up to 18%. The depth of composite surface layer were 100~200 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and these were acceptable in surface strengthening which were proved by Vickers hardness indentation method.
The degree of the indentation damage and strength degradation for 3Y-TZP ceramics and (Y,Nb)-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ dental implant composites was investigated under the Hertzian cyclic fatigue. Fatigue tests were conducted at contact loads of 500 to 3000 N and up to $10^6$ cycles in exact in vitro environments. At 500 N, no strength degradation and crack generation was observed up to $5{\times}10^5$ contact cycles. Fatigue properties of 3Y-TZP ceramics was superior to (Y,Nb)-TZP/ㅍ composites due to stress relief caused by the phase transformation from tettagonal to monoclinic phase. As contact load increased, the drastic reduction in strength was found when the damage transition from ring to radial crack occurred. The extent of strength degradation was more pronounced in vitro environments probably due to chemical corrosion of artificial saliva through cracks introduced during large numbers of contacts.

Three- and five-layer 3Y-YZP/12Ce- TZP composites prepared by a slip casting method have been characterized in terms of mechanical properties. The fracture strength of mutilayer c$\alpha$nposites determined in a diametral compression test was 327~534 MPa. Although the indentation strength of the materials was generally reduced with i increasing Vickers indentation load up to 300 N, the damage resistance of multilayer composites was superior compared to monolithic layer TZP material. The four-point bend strength of the layered material remained at the values of 620~674 MPa after indentation with a load of 49 N, while that of the monolithic TZP material was 129~339 MPa. The microindentation toughness of the multilayer material was $7.7~13.1\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.
