  • In this paper, we present a new smoothing algorithm for variable depth mapping for real time stereoscopic image for 3D display. Proposed algorithm is based on the physical concept, called Laplacian equation and we also discuss the mapping of the depth from scene to displayed image. The approach to solve the problem in stereoscopic image which we adopt in this paper is similar to multi-region algorithm which was proposed by N.Holliman. The main difference thing in our algorithm compared with the N.Holliman's multi-region algorithm is that we use the Laplacian equation by considering the distance between viewer and object. We implement the real time stereoscopic image generation method for OpenGL on the circular polarized LCD screen to demonstrate its real functioning in the visual sensory system in human brain. Even though we make and use artificial objects by using OpenGL to simulate the proposed algorithm we assure that this technology may be applied to stereoscopic camera system not only for personal computer system but also for public broad cast system.

  • This paper aims to examine experimentally the difference of subjectively measured degree of depth between two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) images. For this paper, two experiments were conducted; in the first experiment, the subjects were asked to estimate the distance between two objects presented with different depths, while in the second experiment, the subjects' role was to rank three objects in the order of distance from the screen. In both experiments, the objects were presented either in 2D or 3D images. The results of the experiments show that the use of 3D images can induce more accurate and more stable estimates of distance than the use of 2D images. However, it is also noted that the absolute degree of depth is not the unique criteria utilized by the subjects for the distinction of small differences of depth.

  • In this paper we present creating 3D image from 2D image by extract initial depth values calculated from focal values. The initial depth values are created by using the extracted focal information, which is calculated by the comparison of original image and Gaussian filtered image. This initial depth information is allocated to the object segments obtained from normalized cut technique. Then the depth of the objects are corrected to the average of depth values in the objects so that the single object can have the same depth. The generated depth is used to convert to 3D image using DIBR(Depth Image Based Rendering) and the generated 3D image is compared to the images generated by other techniques.

  • In this paper, we propose 3D cloud animation by cloud modeling method of 2D images retrieved from a meteorological satellite. First, on the satellite images, we locate numerous control points to perform thin-plate spline warping analysis between consecutive frames for the modeling of cloud motion. In addition, the spectrum channels of visible and infrared wavelengths are used to determine the amount and altitude of clouds for 3D cloud image reconstruction. Pre-integrated volume rendering method is used to achieve seamless inter-laminar shades in real-time using small number of slices of the volume data. The proposed method could successfully construct continuously moving 3D clouds from 2D satellite images at an acceptable speed and image quality.

  • Purpose : A new virtual simulation technique for craniospinal irradiation (CSI) that uses a CT-simulator was developed to improve the accuracy of field and shielding placement as well as patient positioning. Materials and Methods : A CT simulator (CT-SIM) and a 3-D conformal radiation treatment planning system (3D-CRT) were used to develop CSI. The head and neck were immobilized with a thermoplastic mask while the rest of the body was immobilized with a Vac-Loc. A volumetric image was then obtained with the CT simulator. In order to improve the reproducibility of the setup, datum lines and points were marked on the head and body. Virtual fluoroscopy was performed with the removal of visual obstacles, such as the treatment table or immobilization devices. After virtual simulation, the treatment isocenters of each field were marked on the body and on the immobilization devices at the conventional simulation room. Each treatment fields was confirmed by comparing the fluoroscopy images with the digitally reconstructed radiography (DRR) and digitally composited radiography (DCR) images from virtual simulation. Port verification films from the first treatment were also compared with the DRR/DCR images for geometric verification. Results : We successfully performed virtual simulations on 11 CSI patients by CT-SIM. It took less than 20 minutes to affix the immobilization devices and to obtain the volumetric images of the entire body. In the absence of the patient, virtual simulation of all fields took 20 min. The DRRs were in agreement with simulation films to within 5 mm. This not only reducee inconveniences to the patients, but also eliminated position-shift variables attendant during the long conventional simulation process. In addition, by obtaining CT volumetric image, critical organs, such as the eyes and the spinal cord, were better defined, and the accuracy of the port designs and shielding was improved. Differences between the DRRs and the portal films were less than 3 m in the vertebral contour. Conclusion : Our analysis showed that CT simulation of craniospinal fields was accurate. In addition, CT simulation reduced the duration of the patient's immobility. During the planning process. This technique can improve accuracy in field placement and shielding by using three-dimensional CT-aided localization of critical and target structures. Overall, it has improved staff efficiency and resource utilization by standard protocol for craniospinal irradiation.

  • The stereoscopic image is that we can see it closer than a real thing compared to 2D image, and it has influence on human's vision information because it is more natural method to feel connections between the spaces of the image and himself. There are several method convert from 2d image to 3d image. But, in this paper, we are propose the image separate algorithm of continuous input system through a spatial analysis, not be done with 2D still image. Additionally, we will adapt to the moving vector which has been used in MPEG. In this experiment, we obtained the effect of 3D image.

  • Viewers of videos are likely to absorb more information from the part of the screen that attracts visual attention. This fact has led to the visual attention models that are being used in producing and evaluating videos. In this paper, we investigate the factors that are significant to visual attention and the mathematical form of the visual attention model. We then estimated the visual attention probability using the statistical design of experiments. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) verifies that the motion velocity, distance from the screen, and amount of defocus blur affect human visual attention significantly. Using the response surface modeling (RSM), we created a visual attention score model that concerns the three factors, from which we calculate the visual attention probabilities (VAPs) of image pixels. The VAPs are directly applied to existing gradient based 3D effect perception measurement. By giving weights according to our VAPs, our algorithm achieves more accurate measurement than the existing method. The performance of the proposed measurement is assessed by comparing them with subjective evaluation as well as with existing methods. The comparison verifies that the proposed measurement outperforms the existing ones.

  • Two cameras which function like human eyes, are needed to make 3D stereoscopic image. That is, stereoscopic image is made via 3 dimensional image processing for combining two images from left and right camera. In this paper two high resolution zoom cameras are used to make HD resolution stereoscopic camera. And the algorithm which convert to stereoscopic image from HD resolution zoom camera image, is implemented using FPGA for real-time operation. The algorithm which measure the depth of object between left and right image is proposed.

  • A chameleonic surface proposed in this study was a pin-art and 3D display device for generating arbitrary shapes. A smooth and continuous surface was formed using slim telescopic actuators and high-elasticity composite material. Realistic 3D shapes were continuously generated by projecting dynamic mapping images on the surface. A slim telescopic actuator was designed to show long strokes and minimize area for staking. A 3D shape was formed by thrusting and extruding the high-elasticity material using multiple telescopic actuators. This structure was advantageous for generating arbitrary continuous surface, projecting dynamic images and lightening weight. Because of real-time synchronization, a distributed controller based on EtherCAT was applied to operate hundreds of telescopic actuators smoothly. Integrated operating software consecutively generated realistic scenes by coordinating extruded shapes and projecting 3D image from multiple projectors. An opera content was optimized for the chameleon surface and showed to an audience in an actual concert.
