  • Electropolishing is the anodic dissolution process in the transpassive state. It removes non-metallic inclusions and improves mechanical and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. If there is a Bailby layer, it will be recovered again. Electropolishing is normally used to remove a very thin layer of material on the surface of a metal component. The aim of this study is to determine the tendencies of electropolishing STS316L tubes in terms of current density, machining time, temperature, electrode gap and surface roughness.

생체용 Ti-Zr-Pd계 합금의 양극분극특성 (Anodic Polarization Properties of Ti-Zr-Pd Based Alloys for Biomedical Applications)

  • For biomedical applications. Ti-X%Zr-Y%Pd(X: $10{\sim}20$, Y:0.2 or 0.4) based alloys not containing harmful Al and V were newly designed, and polarization curves for their alloys were measured at $37^{\circ}C$ in 5% HCl solution in order to understand effects of Zr on the corrosion. From the results of anodic polarization behavior, it was found that the corrosion resistance increased with increasing Zr content. The results show their potential to develope Ti-based alloys for biomedical materials. The Ti-20%Zr-0.2%Pd alloy shows excellent corrosion resistance and was superior to those of the Ti. Ti-6%Al-4%V ELI alloy, Co-30%Cr-6%Mo alloy and STS 316L stainless steel.

  • Carbon thin films were deposited on STS 316L sheets by inductively coupled plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering with or without substrate bias voltage. Typical Raman spectrum for amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) was obtained, and the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) was measured to show its conductive nature. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to investigate the corrosion mechanism of the carbon coating under the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) condition. According to the pore-corrosion mechanism, the electrolyte penetrates the carbon coating through the pores and reacts with the substrate. As the substrate corrosion proceeds, the pore enlargement occurs and the surface area of the substrate exposed to the electrolyte. Applicability of the carbon coating for the PEMFC bipolar plate was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. Finally, an adhesion problem was briefly considered.

이종마찰용접재의 최적용접조건과 음향방출에 의한 실시간 품질평가 (Optimal Welding Condition of Dissimilar Friction Welded Materials and Its Real Time Evaluation by Acoustic Emission)

  • In this paper, dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15 mm diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(SCM440) to stainless steel(STS316L) to investigate their mechanical properties. Consequently, optimal welding conditions were n=2000 rpm, HP=70 MPa, UP=140 MPa, HT=10 sec and UT=10 sec when the metal loss(Mo) is 8.6 mm. In addition, an acoustic emission technique was applied to evaluate the optimal friction welding condition. AE parameters including the cumulative count, amplitude and energy showed a various changes according to the friction condition. A continuous type waveforms and low frequency spectrum was presented in friction time. On the other hand, a burst type waveform and high frequency spectrum was exhibited in pressing time.

  • 소구경 배관 소켓 용접부의 고주기 피로특성윽 평가하고 피로 균열의 발생을 음향방출법을 이용하여 실시간 모니터링 하였다. 스테인리스 316L강 시험편은 가스텅스텐아크용접 공정으로 루트부에 결함이 없는 시험편과 용입불량 결함이 있는 시험편으로 준비하였다. 피로파단은 고응력 일때는 토우부, 상대적으로 저응력일 때는 루트부에서 일어났다. 피로시험동안 음향방출 카운트가 급격히 증가하는 시점을 균열의 발생 싸이클 ($N_i$)로 정의하였고 방사선투과법과 전자현미경을 이용하여 피로균열 생성 싸이클 전과 후에서 균열을 확인하였다. 소켓용접배관의 굽힘피로 손상 진단 및 감시를 위해 균열의 존재와 파괴모드 그리고 균열의 발생 싸이클에 관한 연구를 수행하였다.

동축 파이프 이음부의 레이저용접 공정변수에 관한 연구 (Study on the Process Parameters for Laser Welding of Coaxial Circular Pipe Inner Flange)

  • The laser welding was performed for the flange joint of two overlapped coaxial circular pipes which serve as the inlet and connector pipes of STS 316L. The laser welding test finally resulted in a good penetration depth of 1.8 to 2.0 mm. On the way to get the good welding quality, two important parameters were found to be optimized. One is the focal positioning which is the offset of the laser beam focus to the exact welding seam line, which is more critical in the inner flange laser welding. When the beam spot size was deviated more than $200\;{\mu}m$ from the seam line, welding of two pipes is failed. The other is a gap size since a certain amount of gap is inevitable due to fabrication tolerance, or artificial allowances for smooth insertion of a pipe. However, it is required to restrict the gap allowance within 0.2mm to avoid undesirable undercut on a welding bead.

극저온 환경에 적용되는 INCONEL 718합금의 GTAW 기계적 특성 평가 (Mechanical Properties Evaluation of GTAW for INCONEL 718 alloy apply to Cryogenic Condition)

  • INCONEL 718합금은 상온, 고온 및 저온환경에서 기계적 특성이 아주 우수하다. 상온에서의 모재 강도는 약 900MPa이며, 열처리 후 시효경화처리에 의해 강도가 약 1300MPa까지 증가한다. 이러한 INCONEL 718합금의 기계적 특성은 시험결과에서도 유사한 값을 나타내었고, GTAW 용접부의 상온 기계적 특성도 모재보다 우수한 강도를 나타내었다. 또한 저온에서의 기계적 특성은 모든 시험조건에서 상온보다 높은 강도를 나타내었으며, 열처리 모재시편과 용접시편은 1400MPa에 달하는 고강도를 나타내었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 INCONEL 718합금의 저온 기계적 특성이 우수한 것을 증명하였고, 용접성 또한 모재의 특성과 같이 상온 및 저온 특성이 우수한 것을 알 수 있었다. INCONEL 718 합금과 STS 316L의 이종접합의 경우에도 $-100^{\circ}C$환경의 인장강도가 상온보다 300MPa 이상 증가하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서, INCONEL 718합금은 $100^{\circ}C$이하부터 일정온도까지는 기계적 특성이 계속 증가 할 것으로 사료되며, 극저온 고압 상태로 공급되는 산화제 배관 제작에 적합한 소재로 판단된다.

Ti-Nb계 합금의 세포독성에 관한 연구 (A study on cytotoxicity of Ti-Nb alloys)

  • The use of titanium alloys as biomaterials is increasing due to their superior biocompatibility and enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and cobalt-based alloys. Ti-6Al-4V ($\alpha+\beta$type) alloy instead of pure titanium ($\alpha$type) is being widely used as biomaterials has some characteristics such as high fatigue strength, tensile strength and corrosion resistance. It also has similar characteristics to Ti in inducing bony ingrowth. But it has been reported recently that the vanadium element expresses cytotoxicity and carcinogenicity and the aluminium element is related with dementia of Alzheimer type and neurotoxicity. In order to overcome their detrimental effects, $\beta$-phase stabilizer Nb was chosen in the present study. CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), Ti-3wt.%Nb($\alpha$type), Ti-20wt.%Nb ($\alpha+\beta$type) and Ti-40 wt.%Nb($\beta$type) alloys were melted by vacuum arc furnace. Biocompatibility of Ti-Nb alloys was evaluated by cytotoxicity test. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. For the cytotoxicity test, Ti-Nb alloys showed excellent biocompatibility compared to CP-Ti(ASTM grade 2), 316L STS and Co-Cr alloys.

An Investigation on Application of Experimental Design and Linear Regression Technique to Predict Pitting Potential of Stainless Steel

  • This study using experimental design and linear regression technique was implemented in order to predict the pitting potential of stainless steel in marine environments, with the target materials being AL-6XN and STS 316L. The various variables (inputs) which affect stainless steel's pitting potential included the pitting resistance equivalent number (PRNE), temperature, pH, Cl- concentration, sulfate levels, and nitrate levels. Among them, significant factors affecting pitting potential were chosen through an experimental design method (screening design, full factor design, analysis of variance). The potentiodynamic polarization test was performed based on the experimental design, including significant factor levels. From these testing methods, a total 32 polarization curves were obtained, which were used as training data for the linear regression model. As a result of the model's validation, it showed an acceptable prediction performance, which was statistically significant within the 95% confidence level. The linear regression model based on the full factorial design and ANOVA also showed a high confidence level in the prediction of pitting potential. This study confirmed the possibility to predict the pitting potential of stainless steel according to various variables used with experimental linear regression design.

비대칭 펄스 DC 반응성 스퍼터링 법에 의한 CNx 박막의 기계적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Mechanical Properties of CNx Thin Films Deposited by Asymmetric Bipolar Pulsed D.C. Sputtering)

  • In case of using Asymmetric Bipolar Pulsed DC (ABPD) power generator, thin film is efficiently deposited as ions are getting higher energy by suppressing target poisoning and electric arc. In this article, the mechanical properties of CNx thin films deposited on the STS 316L were compared with DC and ABPD power generators. The CNx thin films deposited with ABPD clearly improved wear resistance by higher ratio of sp3CN as compared with DC. Nb interlayer affected to increase the value of 10N of adhesion between CNx thin films and substrate. But, CNx thin films deposited with ABPD couldn't endure to wear load and decreased wear resistance as the films were too thinner than substrate. Nevertheless the higher substrate bias energy applied to perform the dense films, it wasn't shown benefits about the wear properties from DC sputtering. But, in case of using ABPD sputtering, the wear resistance was largely improved without changing morphology despite of thin films.
