An effective design technique for symmetrical coupled shear walls is presented. Proposed formulation including assumptions and steps with mathematical formulation has been elaborated to make the design technique. An example has been considered to validate the technique with the DRAIN-3DX (1993) and SAP V 10.0.5 (2000) nonlinear programs. Parametric study has also been considered to find out the limitations along with remedial action of this technique. On the other hand, nonlinear static analysis is considered to determine the response reduction factor of coupled shear walls. Finally, it has been concluded in this paper that the proposed design technique can be considered to design the coupled shear walls under seismic motion.

This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure on horizontally layered half-space considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. the horizontal and rocking motions of the structures are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential function which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the sloshing behavior of the fluid as well as deformed configuration of the structure. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and a frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary with structure. The soil medium is presented using the 3-D axisymmetric finite elements and dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structures embedded in ground as well as on ground since it models the soil medium directly as well as the structure. For the purpose of vertification dynamci characteristics of a tank on homogeneous half-space is analyzed. Comparison of the present results with those by others shows good agreement.

The velocity structure beneath the CHNB broadband station is determined by receiver function analysis using by from teleseismic P waveforms. The detailed broadband receiver functions are obtained by stacking method for source-equalized vertical, radial and tangential components of teleseismic P waveforms. A time domain inversion uses the stacked radial receiver function to determine vertical P wave velocity structure beneath the station. The crustal velocity structures beneath the stations are estimated using the receiver function inversion method in the case at the crustal model parameterized by many thin, flat-lying, homogeneous layers. Events divide into 4 groups. four azimuths corresponding to events in group a(southwest), b(south), c(southeast), d(northeast). The result of crust at model inversion shows the crustal velocity structure beneath the CHNB station varies smoothly with increasing depth. The conard discontinuity lies around 18 km and moho discontinuity lies range from 30 to 34 km.

This work resumes a research that proposes the use of the technique based on the dissipation energy of the shape memory alloy (SMA) ties. It focuses principally on the assessment of the effectiveness of the use of these smart materials on displacements, accelerations and the stresses of the minaret of the great mosque of Ajloun in Jordan. The 3-D finite element model of the minaret is performed by the ANSYS software. First of all, the proposed model is calibrated and validated according to the experimental results gathered from ambient vibration testing results. Then, a nonlinear transient analysis is considered, when the El-Centro earthquake is used as the input signal. Different simulating cases concerning the location, number and type of SMA devices are proposed in order to see their influence on the seismic response of the minaret. Hence, the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed SMA device.
The site effects of seismic stations were evaluated by conducting a simultaneous inversion of the stochastic point-source ground-motion model (STGM model; Boore, 2003) parameters based on the accumulated dataset of horizontal shear-wave Fourier spectra. A model parameter $K_0$ and frequency-dependent site amplification function A(f) were used to express the site effects. Once after a H/V ratio of the Fourier spectra was used as an initial estimate of A(f) for the inversion, the final A(f) which is considered to be the result of combined effect of the crustal amplification and loca lsite effects was calculated by averaging the log residuals at the site from the inversion and adding the mean log residual to the H/V ratio. The seismic stations were classified into five classes according to $logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f), the maximum level of the site amplification function in the range of 1 Hz < f < 10 Hz, i.e., A: $logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f) < 0.2, B: 0.2 $\leq$$logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f) < 0.4, C: 0.4 $\leq$$logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f) < 0.6, D: 0.6 $\leq$$logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f) < 0.8, E: 0.8 $\leq$$logA_{1-10}^{max}$(f). Implication of the classified result was supported by observing a shift of the dominant frequency of average A(f) for each classified stations as the class changes. Change of site classes after moving seismic stations to a better site condition was successfully described by the result of the station classification. In addition, the observed PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration)-values for two recent moderate earthquakes were well classified according to the proposed station classes.
This study is aimed at identifying structural element stiffness influence on vertical earthquake response of mid-rise R/C frame buildings. To this aim, a mid-rise RC building structure is designed as per the new Turkish Seismic Code for Buildings-2018, and 3D FE model of the building is established. Based on the established FE model, a total number of six buildings are considered depending on certain percentage increase in beam, slab, and column. The time-history response analyses (THA) are performed separately for only horizontal (H) and horizontal +vertical (H+V) earthquake motions to make a comparison between the load cases. The analysis results are presented comparatively in terms of the monitoring parameters of the base overturning moment (Mo), the top-story lateral displacement (dL) and the top-story vertical displacement (dV). The obtained results reveal that the base overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement are affected by vertical earthquake motion regardless of the increase in the dimension of beam, slab, and column. However, vertical earthquake motion is not effective on the top-story lateral displacement due to no change between H and H+V load. The dimensional increase in either slab or beam leads to a considerable increase in the base overturning moment and the top-story vertical displacement while causing decrease in the top-story lateral displacement. In addition, the dimensional increase in column has a positive effect on the decrease in the monitoring parameters of the base overturning moment (Mo), the top-story lateral displacement (dL) and the top-story vertical displacement (dV).
Precast concrete manufacturing has proved economies of scale through the repetitive production by means of standardization, automation, and prefabrication. Advanced digital design and fabrication technologies can empower its benefits by enabling mass customization in the building design and construction. This study analyzed five case studies in terms of 1) design intent and background, 2) module development and facade construction, 3) integrated process among project stakeholder. This article has attempted to establish the following three points in conclusion: 1) Form generating digital design tools such as Rhino, CATIA, Generative Component, and Digital Project were implemented to produce parametric surface pattern and rationalization to maximize existing precast manufacturing benefits. Also, BIM program has been used to promote coordination and communication among engineering consultants and contractors, 2) In addition to traditional precast concrete materials, GFRC, RFP, brick cladding precast and 3D printed mould have been introduced to reduce the weight and cost and to comply the code from the zoning, seismic, and fireproof requirements, 3) Design-assist contract, design-assist financial support, and co-location measures have been introduced to facilitate collaboration between architect, fabricator, and contractor from the beginning of the project.

A great interest in the seismic performance evaluation of small size tunnel structures such as utility tunnel has been taken since recent earthquakes at Pohang and Gyeongju in Korea. In this study, the three-dimensional dynamic analyses of vertical shaft and horizontal tunnel under seismic load were carried out using FLAC3D. Especially, parametric analyses was performed to investigate the effects of interfacial stiffness on interfacial behavior between soil and structure. The parametric analysis showed that the interfacial stiffness scarcely gave an effect on the global dynamic behavior of the structure, while had a significant effect on the local displacement behavior of the connections. The magnitude of the interfacial stiffness was inversely proportional to the displacement, while the magnitude of interface stiffness was proportional to the normal and shear stresses. The results of this study suggest the limitations of the existing empirical equations for interfacial stiffness and emphasize the need to develop new interfacial stiffness models.
In this study, the heterogeneity of internal structure of various igneous rocks acquired in Korea was quantified and correlated with the seismic velocity and the point load strength. Three-dimensional X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) was used to obtain information on the internal structure of the rock specimen, and the representative unit length (LR) was calculated by applying a statistical technique to the CT images. We also proposed an estimation equation to predict the mechanical properties of rocks from the relationship between LR, acoustic velocity and point load strength. In the proposed method, it is shown that the characterization of internal structure of rocks could be utilized as an indirect index to account for the mechanical behavior of rocks by substituting physical laboratory testing for non-destructive test.
25 seismic shot gathers were obtained to study the two dimensional subsurface shear wave velocities in a landfilled area near the Keum river estuary. Borehole(BH#1 and BH#2) tests at two sites were made in the same area. Standard Penetration Tests were also performed at the same time. The 2-D shear wave velocity structure resulted from the inversion of the seismic data shows that the subsurface of the studied area consists of the upper 1${\sim}$3 meter thick layer(200 m/sec${\sim}$700 m/sec), the middle 5${\sim}$8 m thick low velocity layer(100 m/sec${\sim}$400 m/sec), and the lower layer of 1000m/sec or higher shear wave velocities. The thickness of the low velocity layer decreases from the BH #1 site to the BH #2 site. The depth to the basement also decreases toward the BH #2 site. The examination of the S wave velocity structure, the description of the geologic contents, and the Standard Penetration Test values indicate that the middle layer of low shear wave velocity may be related to the clay content of the layer. On the other hand, the Standard Penetration test values increase with depth, showing no significant relationship with the geologic contents of the subsurface. This study shows that the inversion of surface waves can be effective in the study of the shear wave velocity, especially in the area where low velocity layers can be found. The method of inversion of surface waves also can be used as a viable technique to overcome the limit of the seismic refraction method.
