  • Mode shapes and natural frequencies of the bell type shell are analyzed numerically by the finite element method. The impulse hammer method and the Fast Fourier Transform analyzer are used for the experimental test. All types of mode shapes are expressed by the computer graphics. Numerical solutions are good agreement with the experimental results. The sustaining sound of the typical bell-type shell depend upon the first flexural mode (0-2 mode) and the second flexural mode (0-3 mode), and their mode shapes are independent upon thickness Dangjwas, holes, and added mass effects. Asymmetric effects by Dangjwas, holes and added mass give rise to beat frequencies, and the added mass is found to be most effective.

  • Beating phenomenon which is generated by two closely located natural frequencies is one of research tenet for King Song-Dok bell. In this paper, we investigate the vibration shape of these natural frequencies using very extensive experimental data. Vibration signals are sampled at 108 points around the bell using accelerometers. Measured signals are anlayzed in time and frequency domain. Twelve natural shapes under 800Hz are plotted.

  • A three-dimensional(3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, circular rings with isosceles trapezoidal and triangular cross-sections. Displacement components u/sub s/, u/sub z/, and u/sub θin the meridional, normal, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in θ, and algebraic polynomials in the ψ and z directions. Potential(strain) and kinetic energies of the circular ring are formulated, and upper bound values of the frequencies we obtained by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Novel numerical results are presented for the circular rings with isosceles trapezoidal and equilateral triangular cross-sections having completely free boundaries. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the rings. The method is applicable to thin rings, as well as thick and very thick ones.

  • A three-dimensional method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of hollow bodies of revolution (i.e., thick shells), not limited to straight line generators or constant thickness. The middle surface of the shell may have arbitrary curvatures, and the wall thickness may vary arbitrarily. Displacement components$U_\Phi, U_z, U_\theta$ in the meridional, normal and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in$\theta$, and algebraic polynomials in the$\Phi$and z directions. Potential(strain) and kinetic energies of the entire body are formulated, and upper bound values of the frequencies are obtained by minimizing the frequencies. As the degrees of the polynomials are increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Novel numerical results are presented for two types of thick conical shells and thick spherical shell segments having linear thickness variations. Convergence to four digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of both types of shells. The method is applicable to thin shells, as well as thick and very thick ones.

  • This paper presents the results of fluidelastic instability analysis performed for the U-tube bundle of a Westinghouse model 51 steam generator, one of the recirculating types designed at an early stage, in which the principal region of external cross-flow is associated with the U-bend portion of tube. The prerequisites for this analysis are detailed informations of the secondary side flow conditions in the steam generator and the free vibration behaviours of the U-tubes. In this study, the three-dimensional two-phase flow field in the steam generator has been calculated employing the ATHOS3 steam generator two-phase flow code and the ANSYS engineering analysis code has been used to calculate the free vibration responses of specific U tubes under consideration. The assessment of the potential instability for the suspect U-tubes, which is the final analysis process of the present work, has been accomplished by combining the secondary side velocity and density distributions obtained from the ATHOS3 prediction with the relative modal displacement and natural frequency data calculated using the ANSYS code. The damping of tubes in two-phase flow has been deduced from the existing experimental data by taking into account the secondary side void fraction effect. In operation of the steam generator, the tube support conditions at the tube-to-tube support plate intersections due to either tube denting degradation or deposition of tube support plate corrosion products or ingression of dregs. Thus, various hypothetical cases regarding the tube support conditions at the tube-to-tube support plate intersections have been considered to investigate the clamped support effects on the forced vibration response of the tube. Also, the effect of anti-vibration bars support in the curved portion of tube has been examined.
