  • In this study, we propose a new three-node hybrid-mixed curved beam element with the relaxed-equiribrium stress functions for static analysis. The proposed element considering shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The stress functions are carefully chosen from three important considerations: (i) all the kinematic deformation modes must be suppressed, and (ii) the spurious constraints must be removed in the limiting behaviors via the field-consistency, and (iii) the relaxed equilibrium conditions could be incorporated because it might be impossible to select the stress functions and parameters to fully satisfy both the equiribrium conditions and the suppression of kinematic deformation modes in the three-node curved beam hybrid-mixed formulation. Numerical examples confirm the superior and stable behavior of the proposed element regardless of slenderness ratio and curvature. Besides, the proposed element shows the outstanding performance in predicting the stress resultant distributions.

  • Curved beams are more efficient in transfer of loads than straight beams because the transfer is effected by bending, shear and membrane action. The finite element method is a versatile method for solving structural mechanics problems and curved beam problems have been solved using this method by many author. In this study, a new three-noded hybrid-mixed curved beam element is proposed to investigate the in-plane flexural vibration behavior of arches depending on the curvature, aspect ratio and boundary conditions, etc. The proposed element including the effect of shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle, and employs the quadratic displacement functions and consistent linear stress functions. The stress parameters are then eliminated from the stationary condition of the variational principle so that the standard stiffness equations are obtained. Several numerical examples confirm the accuracy of the proposed finite element and also show the dynamic behavior of arches with various shapes.

  • An improved formulation of thin-wailed curved beams with variable curvatures based on displacement field considering the second order terms of finite semitangential rotations is presented. From linearized virtual work principle by Vlasov's assumptions, the total potential energy is derived and all displacement parameters and the warping functions are defined at cendtroid axis. In developing the thin-walled curved beam element having eight degrees of freedom per a node, the cubic Hermitian polynomials are used as shape functions. In order to verify the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, free vibrations and buckling analyses of parabolic and elliptic arche shapes with mono-symmetric sections are carried out and compared with the results analyzed by ABAQUS' shell element.

  • This study is performed to understand complex behavior and to investigate the rational analysis methods for seismic design of the curved bridges. To analyze the curved bridges for the seismic loadings, it is used that the finite element analysis program has the 7-dof curved beam and straight beam element. The free vibration characteristics of the curved bridges are compared with the straight bridges that have span length same as the average arc length of inside and outside girder of those. For the same case, the dynamic behavior is compared under seismic loadings. It is found that regular bridges classified by AASHTO are analyzed as if those were straight. To investigate the dynamic behavior of general curved bridges under seismic loading, the seismic loading directions and the subtended angle of curved bridges are varied.

  • A computer program for the linear elastic buckling anlalysis of thin walled members is developed using a 3-node triangular shell element. The element has real stiffness value for a kinematic degree of freedom associated with rotation about the surface normal at each node. The validity of the present computer program is demonstrated through the plate buckling analysis and the lateral-torsional buckling analysis of a straight beam. Then, simply supported circular arches subjected to uniform bending are analyzed and the results are compared with existing solutions.

  • Recently, the free form buildings are constructed frequently. Exterior and interior components of these buildings have the free cross-section and a curved shape. So, There are many usages of classical finite element having tapered section and free-style shape. Some general commercial applications like ETABS, SAP2000, MIDAS are usually used for the safety evaluation of the free form structures. However, there are some limits in the accuracy of structural analysis and the length of analysis time because a very complicated finite element mesh have to be used. Therefore, In this study, a pre and post program module was developed to take advantage of general 3-D curved beam element which has a free-style curved shape and mathematical backgrounds. Pre-post processing module has been developed in this study was developed to control the curvature of the curved members by the NURBS control points. As a result, fast geometric modeling than was possible commercial applications. In addition, realistic depiction of the shape and behavior patterns were possible because of the free-form building allows visual check of the free form.

  • A coupled three-dimensional pile group analysis method was developed by considering complex behavior of sub-structures (pile-soil-cap) which included soil nonlinearity and the behavior of super-structure (pier). As an intermediate analysis method between FBPier 3.0 and Group 0.0, it took advantages of each method. Among the components of a pile group, individual piles were modeled with stiffness matrices of pile heads and soils with nonlinear load-transfer curves (t-z, q-z and p-y curves). A pile cap was modeled with modified four-node flat shell elements and a pier with three-dimensional beam element, so that a unified analysis could be possible. A nonlinear analysis method was proposed in this study with a mixed incremental and iteration techniques. The proposed method for a pile group subjected to axial and lateral loads was compared with othe. analytical methods (i.e., Group 6.0 and FBPier 3.0). It was found that the proposed method could predict the complex behavior of a pile group well, even though piles were modelled simply in this study by using pile head stiffness matrices which were different from the method introduced in FBPier 3.0.
