  • For a positive square-free integer $d$, let $t_d$ and $u_d$ be positive integers such that ${\epsilon}_d=\frac{t_d+u_d{\sqrt{d}}}{\sigma}$ is the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, where ${\sigma}=2$ if $d{\equiv}1$ (mod 4) and ${\sigma}=1$ otherwise For a given positive integer $l$ and a palindromic sequence of positive integers $a_1$, ${\ldots}$, $a_{l-1}$, we define the set $S(l;a_1,{\ldots},a_{l-1})$ := {$d{\in}\mathbb{Z}|d$ > 0, $\sqrt{d}=[a_0,\overline{a_1,{\ldots},2a_0}]$}. We prove that $u_d$ < $d$ for all square-free integer $d{\in}S(l;a_1,{\ldots},a_{l-1})$ with one possible exception and apply it to Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture and Mordell conjecture.

  • In this study, drivers' longitudinal car control, subjective fatigue, and perceived fidelity were compared between 2D and 3D display driving simulation. The results can be summarized as followings. First, in all target speed conditions, the drivers tended to drove faster in 2D display condition than 3D display condition. Second, speed deviation from target speed increased as target speed decreased. Third, distances between the lead vehicle and the driver's vehicle were significantly reduced in the 3D display condition when the speeds of the lead vehicle were relatively fast(i. e., over 80km/h). Fourth, although the perceived fidelity was not significantly different between the two display conditions, subjective fatigue was higher in the 3D display condition than in the 2D display condition.

  • Non-Maxwellian distributions are found in the laboratory and space plasmas. For an accurate study of plasmas, the Kappa-averaged collision strengths of silicon VIII ion for $4^0S_{3/2}-2^0D_{3/2}$, $4^0S_{3/2}-2^0D_{5/2}$ and $2^0D_{3/2}-2^0D_{5/2}$ transitions are calculated for Kappa distributions with ${\kappa}=2$, 3 and 5 and for temperatures from $10^{4.5}K$ to $10^{6.5}K$. Results indicate that significant differences occur between the averaged collision strengths for the Maxwellian and the Kappa distributions. Fuythermore, and for each ${\kappa}$ value, the Kappa-averaged collision strengths vary in a complicated way with temperature for the $4^0S_{3/2}-2^0D_{3/2}$ and $4^0S_{3/2}-2^0D_{5/2}$ transitions while they decrease with increasing temperature for the $2^0D_{3/2}-2^0D_{5/2}$ transition. The calculation is significant if plasmas are to be studied for a non-Maxwellian distribution.

  • Background: There has been few electrophysiologic studies in median proper palmar digital nerve(PPDN). Bar electrode may be a useful tool to evaluate the pathophysiologic state of the distal peripheral nerves. Objectives : To evaluate sensory nerve conduction velocities(NCVs) of median PPDNs in normal controls and carpal tunnel syndrome(CTS) patients by bar electrode, and clarify the usefulness of the bar electrode. Methods : We checked NCV of each median PPDN of thumb(D1), index(D2) and middle finger(D3) in normal controls(68 hands) and CTS patients(95 hands) by bar electrode. The each mean NCV of both groups were compared to find the correlation between them. Results : The mean NCV of each median PPDN in control group were $38.7{\pm}4.2$(D1), $32.0{\pm}4.6$(D2), $34.2{\pm}4.4$(D3) m/sec, and in CTS group were $35.3{\pm}8.9$(D1), $20.2{\pm}5.2$(D2), $20.2{\pm}5.1$(D3) m/sec orderly. There were significant differences between mean NCV of each finger in control group(p=0.0001), but not between each left and right finger(p>0.05). The differences between each mean NCV of control and CTS were significant in all 3 fingers(p=0.0014, 0.0000, 0.0000). Conclusion : Bar electrode is a useful tool to evaluate the pathophysiologic state of the median PPDNs in normal controls and CTS patients.

  • Perdeuterated hexaflouroacetylacetonato-neodymium [$Nd(HFA-D)_3$] complexes were synthesized by the keto-enol tautomerism reaction of $Nd(HFA-D)_3$ in methanol-d$_4$ in order to reduce the radiationless transition to the ligands. The emission properties of $Nd(HFA-D)_3$ complex were measured in the following anhydrous deuterated organic solvents; $Methanol-d_4$, $Aceton-d_6$, $THE-d_8$ and $DMSO-d_6$, and these properties depended on the coordination ability of solvent molecules. The intensity and lifetime of the emission in dimethysulfoxide (DMSO-$d_6$) were superior to those in other in other deuterated solvents. It was suggested that the anhydrous $DMSO-d_6$might be the most appropriate solvent for the liquid laser material of $Nd(HFA-D)_3$ complex.

  • Alcaligenes sp. JMP228 carrying 2,4dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) degradative plasmid pJP4 was inoculated into natural soil, and transfer of the plasmid pJP4 to indigenous soil bacteria was investigated with and without 2,4-D amendment. Plasmid pJP4 transfer was enhanced in the soils treated with 2,4-D, compared to the soils not amended with 2,4-D. Several different transconjugants were isolated from the soils treated with 2,4-D, while no indigenous transconjugants were obtained from the unamended soils. Inoculation of the soils with both the donor Alcaligenes sp. JMP228/pJP4 and a recipient Burkholderia cepacia DBO 1 produced less diverse transconjugants than the soils inoculated with the donor alone. Repetitive extragenic palindromic-polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR) analysis of the transconjugants exhibited seven distinct genomic DNA fingerprints. Analysis of 16S rDNA sequences indicated that the transconjugants were related to members of the genera Burkholderia and Pandoraea. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA genes revealed that inoculation of the donor caused clear changes in the bacterial community structure of the 2,4-Damended soils. The new 16S rRNA gene bands in the DGGE profile corresponded with the 16S rRNA genes of 2,4-Ddegrading transconjugants isolated from the soil. The results indicate that introduction of the 2,4-D degradative plasmid as Alcaligenes sp. JMP228/pJP4 has a substantial impact on the bacterial community structure in the 2,4-D-amended soil.
