  • Design is important in the IT, digital appliance, and auto industries. Aesthetic and art images are being applied for better design satisfaction of the products. Various artistic image patterns are used to satisfy demand of design, but it takes much lead-time and effort to implement them for making dies and molds. In this paper, a hybrid reverse engineering method generating accurate 3D engraving models from 2D art images is proposed through image processing, 3D reconstruction, and NURBS interpolation methods. In order to generate the 3D model from the 2D artistic image, cloud points with z-depth are extracted according to intensity values of the image. An adaptive median filter and harmonic filter are used to obtain the intensity values accurately. NURBS surfaces are generated through the interpolation of the cloud points. Performance of the developed system is to be confirmed through the realization of Mona Lisa and Golden Gate Bridge.

  • Since the early 2000s, various fashion design products that use 3D printing technology have constantly been introduced to the fashion industry. However, given the nature of 3D printing technology, the flexible characteristics of material of textile fabrics is yet to be achieved. The aim of this study is to develop the optimal design conditions for production of flexible and elastic 3D printing fabric structure based on plain weave, which is the basic structure in fabric weaving using SLS 3D printing technology. As a the result this study aims to utilize appropriate design conditions as basic data for future study of flexible fashion product design such as textile material. Weaving structural design using 3D printing is based on the basic plain weave, and the warp & weft thickness of 4mm, 3mm, 2mm, 1.5mm, 1mm, and 0.7mm as expressed in Rhino 6.0 CAD software program for making a 3D model of size $1800mm{\times}180mm$ each. The completed 3D digital design work was then applied to the EOS SLS Machine through Maker ware, a program for 3D printer output, using polyamide 12 material which has a rigid durability strength, and the final results obtained through bending flexibility tests. In conclusion, when designing the fabric structure design in 3D printing using SLS method through application of polyamide 12 material, the thickness of 1 mm presented the optimal condition in order to design a durable digital textile structure with flexibility and elasticity of the 3D printing result.

  • Although there are many needs to use 3D models in MEMS field, it is not easy to generate 3D models based on MEMS CAD. This is because MEMS CAD is based on 2D and their popular format-GDSII file format- has its own limits and problems. The differences between GDSII file format and 3D CAD system, such as (1) superposed modeling, (2) duplicated entity, (3) restricted of entity type, give rise to several problems in data exchange. These limits and problems in GDSII file format have prevented 3D CAD system from generating 3D models from the MEMS CAD. To remove these limits and solve problems, it is important to extract the silhouette of data in the MEMS CAD. The proposed method has two main processes to extract silhouette; one is to extract the pseudo-silhouette from the original 2D MEMS data and the other is to remove useless objects to complete the silhouette. The paper reports on the experience gained in data exchange between 2D MEMS data and 3D models by the proposed method and a case study is presented, which employs the proposed method using MEMS CAD IntelliMask and Solidworks.

  • Three-dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs), starting with memory cubes, have entered the mainstream recently. The benefits many predicted in the past are indeed delivered, including higher memory bandwidth, smaller form factor, and lower energy. However, 3D ICs have yet to find their deployment in aerospace applications. In this paper we first present key design tools and methodologies for high performance, low power, and reliable 3D ICs that mainly target terrestrial applications. Next, we discuss research needs to extend their capabilities to ensure reliable operations under the harsh space environments. We first present a design methodology that performs fine-grained partitioning of functional modules in 3D ICs for power reduction. Next, we discuss our multi-physics reliability analysis tool that identifies thermal and mechanical reliability trouble spots in the given 3D IC layouts. Our tools will help aerospace electronics designers to improve the reliability of these 3D IC components while not degrading their energy benefits.

  • Switched reluctance motor (SRM) has some advantages such as low cost, high torque density etc. However SRM has inevitably high torque ripple due to the double salient structure. To apply SRM to industrial field, we have to minimize torque ripple, which is the weak-Point of SRM. This paper presents optimal design process of SRM using numerical method such as 2D finite element method (FEM) and 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network method (EMCNM). The electrical and geometrical design parameters have been adopted as 2D design variables. The overhang structure of rotor has been also adopted as 3D design variable. From this work, we can obtain the optimal design, which minimize the torque ripple and maximize energy conversion loop.

  • Monolithic three-dimensional (M3D) logics such as M3D-NAND, M3D-NOR, M3D-buffer, M3D 2×1 multiplexer, and M3D D flip-flop, consisting of modularized M3D inverters (M3D-INVs), have been proposed. In the previous M3D logic, each M3D logic had to be designed separately for a standard cell library. The proposed M3D logic is designed by placing modularized M3D-INVs and connecting interconnects such as metal lines or monolithic inter-tier-vias between M3D-INVs. The electrical characteristics of the previous and proposed M3D logics were simulated using the technology computer-aided design and Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis with the extracted parameters of the previously developed LETI-UTSOI MOSFET model for n- and p-type MOSFETs and the extracted external capacitances. The area, propagation delay, falling/rising times, and dynamic power consumption of the proposed M3D logic are lower than those of previous versions. Despite the larger space and lower performance of the proposed M3D logic in comparison to the previous versions, it can be easily designed with a single modularized M3D-INV and without having to design all layouts of the logic gates separately.

  • Elastomeric o-ring performance and structure when subjected to a foreign object is studied using finite element analysis (FEA). Elastomeric o-rings have been studied using 2D analysis for a long time. Contact pressure is an important factor in o-ring design. When contact pressure is lower than applied pressure, leaking, vibration, and noise can occur; resulting in decreased output. In this study, we compared 2D and 3D analyses of elastomeric o-rings. Similar results were shown for 2D and 3D contact pressure. However, when an o-ring encounters foreign object matter, 3D analysis is required because contact pressure in every direction needs to be considered. We determined the influence of foreign matter on o-ring performance and structure by analyzing 10 cases with different clearances in a 3D model. Therefore, an o-ring encountering foreign object matter must be analyzed in 3D with the result included in the o-ring design.

  • The production process of the 3D-animation roughly consists of the pre-production, the main-production and the post-production. The pre-production, which is not only the outset of whole procedure among them but also the process to predict and design overall plan collectively is the most important step. A much more specific and perfect pre-production structure is needed to produce a high quality 3D-animation. Moreover, the standard 3D efficient lighting model is gathering strength as 2D and 3D artworks which are completed in this step maintain colors and looks in the main as well as post-production consistently. This study will make up for the weak points and help both to predict the color range of the overall 3D-animation product and to promote the application range of the 3D lighting system on the pre-production stage by developing the standard 3D lighting model applicable on the early step and calculating its lighting parameter properties.

  • The usage of mixed 2D and 3D CAD data of commercial CAD systems is required in the construction practice. Sometimes 3D wireframe model is required by end-users when 2D CAD data is delivered. However, current KOSDIC can not represent 3D CAD data, because it has been developed as a 2D drawing delivery standard. Therefore, this study is to provide exchange and sharing of mixed 2D and 3D CAD data that add 3D wireframe model in the KOSDIC. To achieve this purpose, the authors have investigated the 3D CAD entities of commercial CAD systems, and have analyzed STEP standards providing 3D wireframe model. The result, the authors have extracted 3D CAD common entities based wireframe model which shall be added in the KOSDIC. This study can be beneficial by using the developed data model for heterogeneous CAD systems, and by providing the representation of mixed 2D and 3D CAD data in construction practice such as GIS, piping system, and so forth.
