  • The paper shows the analysis of operating conflict of OCGR trip events and metering errors in the photovoltaic generation, wind generation distributed generation customers with no defect of the distributed generation facilities, which are connected to 22.9kV distribution lines. To analyze problems with metering errors and OCGR fault event, a power quality analyzer and PSIM program were used to test the field and to simulate in Sun-Cheon photovoltaic generation and Seo-Cheon photovoltaic generation customers. With the trial distribution line, the result of analysis was verified to prove with the same situation of the actual field. This paper suggests short term and long term countermeasures of OCGR fault events, analysis of over and shortage of metering errors in distributed generation customers.

  • Ground rods as the discharge path are commonly installed to ensure the safety of human beings and facilities from the surge. Accordingly, proper grounding resistance are specified by the grounding types, and the specified resistance are also required to install the lightning protective facilities. it is needed to analyze the difference between these two resistance through the field test. Therefore, in this paper, the impulse response behavior of the ground rods is analyzed by constructing the test facilities and by testing the ground rods in multi-ground power distribution systems. The impulse responses were analyzed, in transient state, by testing the concrete poles as well since the grounding wires are installed in the concrete poles.

  • The induced voltage of underground pipelines caused by the stray current not only do harm to workers and instruments. but also cause big accident such as gas explosion. The AC stray current is mainly produced by the grounding system of the 22.9kV distribution power system and the DC stray current is mainly produced by the subway system. The mechanism of AC and DC induction, stray current failure examples of domestic and foreign countries and the countermeasure of the AC and DC induction are described.

  • The smart grid with distributed power supply introduces a number of problems including not only the problems of the existing power grid but also the problem of protection co-operation due to new electric phenomenon because it has a mixed operation structure combining the existing radial operation structure and the new loop operation structure. The EMTP based power system analysis method has flexibility and convenience from the view of system configuration but it requires another experimental verification because of uncertainty of design and analysis results. On the other hand, the real demonstration system has difficulties in observing accurate fault on large scale system due to considerable economical and spatial construction cost, system configuration constraint, and it is difficult to demonstrate the distributed, autonomous and adaptive control strategy of smart grid. In this paper, a basic theory for a micro smart grid simulator design using MEMS(Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) miniaturization technology is studied which can safely and freely experiment and observe electrical phenomena, and distribution, autonomous adaptive control strategy for disturbances on 22.9kV smart grid under minimum economic and spatial cost.

  • This paper focuses on the improvement of fault detection algorithm in FRTU(feeder remote terminal unit) on the feeder of distribution power system. FRTU is applied to fault detection schemes for phase fault and ground fault. Especially, cold load pickup and inrush restraint functions distinguish the fault current from the normal load current. FRTU shows FI(Fault Indicator) when the fault current is over pickup value or inrush current. STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) analysis provides the frequency and time Information. FCM(Fuzzy C-Mean clustering) algorithm extracts characteristics of harmonics. The neural network system as a fault detector was trained to distinguish the inruih current from the fault status by a gradient descent method. In this paper, fault detection is improved by using FCM and neural network. The result data were measured in actual 22.9kV distribution power system.

  • Utilization of Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been growing popularity in recent years due to increment in fuel price and lack of natural resources. Random unexpected charging by home EV charger in distribution is predicted in the future. The power quality problems such as fluctuation of power factor in a residential distribution network was explored with random EV chargers. This paper proposes a high-performance nonlinear sliding mode controller (SMC) for an EV charging system to compensate voltage distortions and to enhance the power factor against the unbalanced EV chargers. For the verification of the proposed scheme, MATLAB-Simulink simulations are performed on 22.9-kV grid. The results show that the proposed scheme can improve the power factor of a smart grid due to the EV chargers on the grid.

  • In order to find out partial discharge (PD) phenomena in the cable joint due to the poor workmanship during the installation, the relationship between PD inception voltages and joint defects was investigated. For the purpose, in the joint of 22.9kV CNCV cables, electric fields were calculated for various semiconductive layer wrong positioning (WP) defects. And, PDIV were investigated through the experiments and compared with the results of electric field analysis. In all WP defect cases, the PD inception field calculated using measured PDIVs was similarly shown to be the average value of 1.84kV/mm. In addition, the calculated PDIV and the measured PDIV were almost equal, from the PDIV calculation using maximum electric fields and the measured PDIV for the normal case. Throughout this study, it is possible to analyze WP defects due to the poor workmanship and to establish better joint design for the distribution grade extruded cable system.

  • The research presented in this paper focuses on a method for the detection of High Impedance Fault(HIF). The method will use the fast wavelet transform and neural network system. HIF on the multi-grounded three-phase four-wires primary distribution power system cannot be detected effectively by existing over current sensing devices. These paper describes the application of fast wavelet transform to the various HIF data. These data were measured in actual 22.9kV distribution system. Wavelet transform analysis gives the frequency and time-scale information. The neural network system as a fault detector was trained to discriminate HIF from the normal status by a gradient descent method. The proposed method performed very well by proving the right state when it was applied staged fault data and normal load mimics HIF, such as arc-welder.

  • The effects of surge arresters for protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been investigated using the digital simulation program EMTP. Distribution lines are spanned on a much large area as compared to transmission lines, and therefore, are more often susceptible to lightning strokes. This paper analyzes the overvoltages on underground cable system against direct lightning strokes to the overhead ground wire using the digital simulation. The effects of lightning protection methods, such as lowering the grounding resistance and installing the surge arrester, for preventing overvoltages on underground cable system caused by direct lightning strokes to the overhead ground wire is investigated. Several schemes have been proposed to protect underground cables. This paper summarizes the main results of a study aimed at analysis of lightning overvoltages in variety underground feeders protected by metal-oxide arresters. This study will provide insulation coordination methods for reasonable system design in 22.9kV underground cable system.
