The present study was conducted to investigate the antimutagenic potential of the methanolic extract from the leaves of sweet potato (Ipomea batatas, IB) with the SOS chromotest (umu test) and Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100. The anticarcinogenic effects were also studied by calculation of the $IC_{50}$ on human cancer cell lines and investigating the function of gap junction in rat liver epithelial cells. The IB extract inhibited dose-dependently the ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity induced spontaneously at concentration of more than 200 mg/ml in S. typhimurium TA 1535/pSK 1002, and decreased significantly (p < 0.01) the ${\beta}$-galactosidase activities induced by mutagen 6-chloro-9-[3-(2-chloroethylamino)proylamino]-2-methoxyacridine dihydrochloride (ICR) at dose of more than 0.4 mg/0.1 ml. The IB extract showed no effect on the spontaneous reversions of S. typhimurium TA 98 and 100 but benzo(${\alpha}$)pyrene (BaP)-stimulated reversions were decreased dose-dependently (p < 0.01) at the concentration of more than 100 mg/ml. The $IC_{50}$ value of stomach cancer cells was lower than that of normal rat liver epithelial cells, but the values of colon and uterine cancer cell lines were similar to those of normal rat liver epithelial cells. The transfer of dye through gap junctions was not affected by treatment of the IB extracts at any concentration during treatment periods. The simultaneously treatment of IB extract and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) effectively prevented the inhibition of dye transfer induced by TPA 1 hour after treatment at all exposed concentrations. The number of gap junctions was significantly (p < 0.01) increased by the treatment with IB extract at concentrations of more than 40 ${\mu}g$/ml. The inhibition of the expression of gap junction proteins by TPA (0.01 ${\mu}g$/ml) was recovered dose dependently by the simultaneous treatment of IB extracts. Our data suggest that Ipomea batatas has antimutagenic and anticarcionogenic activity in vitro.

This study is concerned with the meandering of plume axis in oceanic waters. The process is understood that it is a consequence of the differential contribution by the multiple harmonics of local velocity field to variances of center of mass of crossplume as a function of distance from the source point. A diagnostic model is proposed which is aimed to delineate the eddying motions and furthermore the amplified meandering of plumeaxis. From the data base of dye plumes, wave lengths of meandering eddies are estimated to range between 5.5 to 60.3 (m) in coastal surface waters. A numerical simulation is conducted to predict the concentration field of meandering plume.
This study investigated the proper dyeing conditions, color fastness and functionality of wool fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz. We also tried to improve light fastness through treatment with benzophenone ultraviolet absorber. The dyeing of wool fabrics using Zizania latifolia Turcz was good even without pretreatment or mordanting treatment. Optimal wool fabric dyeing conditions were colorant concentration of 200% (o.w.f.), dyeing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, dyeing time of 80 minutes and a dye bath pH of 3. Color fastness of dyed wool fabrics to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light was 4-5, 5, 4-4-5 (acidic), 4-5 (alkaline) and 2 respectively. The results after treatment with ultraviolet absorber for improving the fastness of daylight were improved to 3-4 grade. The UV protection rate were increased after dyeing and the deodorization of ammonia gas improved to 98%. Bacterial reduction rate (Staphylococcus aureus) of wool fabrics was excellent at 99.9%. All dye fastness (except for light fastness) was excellent; in addition, the functionality of wool fabrics dyed with Zizania latifolia Turcz also improved. The results are expected to be applied to various fields because they indicate excellent results after treatment with ultraviolet absorber for improving the fastness of daylight.
1, 2, 4-Trichlorobenzene (1, 2, 4-TCB) is used as a dye carrier, as an intermediate in the synthesis of herbicides, as a flame retardant, and for other purpose. After a single oral administration of 1, 2, 4-TCB (200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg) in rats, toxic effects were studied by means of serum biochemical and heatological analysis, and liver calcium concentration. Administration of 1, 2, 4-TCB resulted in dose-dependent liver and kidney damage as estimated by increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities, liver calcium concentration and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Pretreatment with DL-buthionine sulfoximine (BSO, 2 mmol/kg, i.p. ) considerably decreased liver glutathione concentration, which was accompanied by markedly elevated serum ALT activites. It is well-known that toxicity of halogenated benzene such as bromobenzene, 1, 4-dichlorobenzene is increased by pretreatment of henobarbital (PB), and protected by pretreatment of cytochrome P450 inhibitor including metyrapone (MP). However, there was no obvious alterations in toxicity of 1, 2, 4-TCB by pretreatment of phenobarbital or metyrapone. In comparison with control group, treatment groups exhibited significant changes in some parameters of hematological analysis but all hematological values remined within normal ranges.
1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TCB) is used as a dye carrier, an intermediate in the syn[hesis of herbicides, aflame retardant, and for other purpose. After a single oral administration of 1,2,4-TCB (200 mg/kg, 400 mg/kg) in rats, toxic effects were studied by means of serum biochemical and hematological analysis, and liver calcium concentration. Administration of 1,2,4-TCB resulted in dose-dependent manner liver and kidney damage being suggested by increased serum alanine aminbtransferase (ALT) activities, liver calcium concentration and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Pretreatment with DL-buthionine sulfoximine (BSO, 2 mmol/kg, i.p.) considerably decreased liver glatathione concentration, which was accompanied by markedly elevated serum ALT activites. It is well-known that toxicity of halogenated benzene such as bromobenzene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene is increased by pretreatment of phenobarbital, and protected by pretreatment of cytochrorn P450 inhibitor including metyrapone. However, there were no obvious alterations in toxicity of 1,2,4-TCB by pretreatment of phenobarbital or metyrapone. In comparison with control group, treatment groups exhibited significant changes in some parameters of hematological analysis but all hematological values remained within normal ranges.
In this work, a detailed study on the electrochemical degradation of an azo dye, Orange G is performed using a platinum electrode. Indeed, the influence of the dye concentration (50-150 mg/L), the pH of the medium and the density of the electric current is studied on the rate of discoloration, the rate of mineralization, the efficiency of the electric current and the energy consumption. The UV-visible spectra of OG plotted against the degradation time show the decrease of the intensity of the characteristic dye peaks. In an environment rich in chlorides, all peaks disappear after 15 min of degradation. However, the peaks at wavelengths of 200 and 290 nm appeared after one hour of treatment. In K2SO4, the eliminated percentages are respectively 46, 54 and 61% for wavelengths of 245, 330 and 480 nm. This suggests that the degradation mechanisms in K2SO4 and KCl environments are not the same. In the middle rich in chlorides, the eliminated percentage of OG did not seem to be affected by the concentrations increase. These results confirm the hypothesis that electrochemical oxidation process is very favorable for concentrated pollutants discharge.
For the purpose of manufacturing a high efficiency TiO2 photocatalyst, B-doped TiO2 photocatalysts are synthesized using a plasma electrolytic oxidation method in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte with different concentrations of H3BO3 as additive. For the B doped TiO2 layer fabricated from sulfuric electrolyte having a higher concentration of H3BO3 additive, the main XRD peaks of (101) and (200) anatase phase shift gradually toward the lower angle direction, indicating volume expansion of the TiO2 anatase lattice by incorporation of boron, when compared with TiO2 layers formed in sulfuric acid with lower concentration of additive. Moreover, XPS results indicate that the center of the binding energy peak of B1s increases from 191.45 eV to 191.98 eV, which suggests that most of boron atoms are doped interstitially in the TiO2 layer rather than substitutionally. The B doped TiO2 catalyst fabricated in sulfuric electrolyte with 1.0 M H3BO3 exhibits enhanced photocurrent response, and high efficiency and rate constant for dye degradation, which is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the new impurity energy band induced by introducing boron to the interstitial site and the improvement of charge transfer reaction.
Clay based coating with zwitterionic functionality is used to remove cationic and anionic dyes. Adsorbent coating was prepared by the mixing of bentonite clay, acrylic polymer (AP) and polyethylene-diamine (EPI-DMA). Characterization was performed using SEM-EDX, XRF, X-ray mapping and FTIR analyses. The adsorption capacity of ZACC was found to be increased from 59.35 to 255.99 mg/g and from 45.84 to 70.09 mg/g for BG and AR1 dyes, respectively using initial concentration (50-200 ppm). Significant adsorption capacity along with mechanical and chemical stability formulates ZACC as an excellent composite coating for treatment of anionic and cationic dyes from industrial wastewater.
In this study, MoS2 nanoparticles were synthesized and analyzed through powder X-ray diffraction, Raman, ultraviolet-visible, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The surface morphologies of the as-synthesized MoS2 nanoparticles were investigated through scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The sonocatalytic activity of the MoS2 nanoparticles toward Orange II removal was evaluated by utilizing a Box-Behnken design for response surface methodology in the experimental design. The sonocatalyst dosage, Orange II dye concentration, and ultrasound treatment time were optimized to be 0.49 g/L, 5 mg/L, and 150 min, respectively. The maximum efficiency of Orange II degradation on MoS2 nanoparticles was achieved, with a final average value of 82.93%. Further, the results of a kinetics study on sonocatalytic Orange II degradation demonstrated that the process fits well with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model.
