Light and electron microscopy of the kidney tissues on viral haemorrhagic disease in rabbits (토끼의 바이러스성(性) 출혈증(出血症) 감염시(感染時) 신장(腎臟)의 광학(光學) 및 전자현미경적(電子顯微鏡的) 관찰(觀察))

  • In order to observe the pathological changes of kidney in rabbits infected with the viral haemorrhagic disease, the kidney tissues from the 91 rabbits infected with the viral haemorrhagic disease were examined by light and electron microscopy. The results observed were as follows: 1. On light microscopic observation, the kidney lesions were identified as haemorrhagic glomerular necrosis(33.0%), membranous glomerulonephritis(20.9%), thrombotic glomerulopathy(19.8%), membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis(8.8%), mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis(8.8%) ischemic acute tubular necrosis(7.7%), and acute serous glomerulitis(6.6%). 2. On electron microscopic observation, cytoplasmic degeneration of mesangial cells, and irregular thickening of basement membranes with electron dense granular materials were observed. In podocytes swelling of mitochondria, dilatation of endoplasmic reticulum and extensive fusion of foot processes were also observed. Nonenveloped round icosahedral picornaviral particles with a diameter of 28~33nm were detected in the cytoplasm of degenerative endothelial cells, polymorphonuclear leucoytes, and monocytes.

Administration of Lead Acetate on the Activity of Free Radical Meta-bolizing Enzyme and Ultrastructural Changes in Rat Kidney (흰쥐에 초산납투여가 신장조직중 Free Radical 대사효소 활성과 초미형태학적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • To investigate the ultrastructural changes of kidney and clarify to a cause of its changes in lead intoxicated rats, the 0.5% lead acetate administed orally to the rats and those were sacrifled at 2 day, 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 week after the treatment of lead acetate. Each extirpated kidney was histopathologically examined under the electron microscopy and histochemical examination was also carried out. Concomitantly, the activity of free radical metabolizing enzyme was determined. The blood levels of lead concentration showed a gradual increase from the first group reaching the plateau at the one or two week group with the slightly decreasing value throughout the whole course of the experiment. And the urinary ALA concentration showed a gradual increase from the first group to the 8 week group. In the kidney tissue of rat sacrified at 6 week, the proximal tubular cells showed dilatation of endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial swelling, increased numbers of secondary lysosomes and myelin figure-like residual bodies on electron microscope and oxygen free radicals are identified by histochemistry on light microscope whereas there were no differences in the activity of catalase and glutathione peroxidase between the lead acetate treated group and control group. But the activity of xanthine oxidase was more increased in lead acetate treated rats than control group. Furthermore, the superoxide dismutase activity was significantly increased in the experimental group than the control group. In conclusion, it is assumed the kidney damage in lead intoxicated rat may be induced by free radicals.

  • These studies were carried out to find out some characteristic responses of biological samples under the exposure of trace metals. In animal experiment, six rats per week were killed for 6 weeks under Cd exposures and the concentrations of Cd, Cu and Zn in their organs and blood were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.The results were summarized as follows: In animal experiments, the concentrations of Cd in the liver and kidney of Cd exposure groups were increased, however, the values of hematocrit and hemoglobin in blood were decreased remarkably. The body weight of the Cd exposure groups showed lower trend than that of control group. The concentrations of Cd in heart, lung and testes were increased slowly during the first 2 weeks. The concentrations of Cd in their organs decreased while the rapid increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. While rapid increase of the concentra~ion of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed, the concentrations of Cd in the organs were decreased afterward and increased again while the low increase of the concentration of Cd in the liver and kidney was observed. The concentrations Cu and Zn were increased remarkably in all the organs for first 2 and 3 weeks. In the exposure groups of Cd+Cu and Cd+Zn, the liver and kidney didn't show lower concentration of Cd than that of Cd group.

  • This study was attempted to investigate on renal effect of ($\pm$)6-chloro-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenol 2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-lH-3 benzazepine (SKF 81297), dopamine $D_1$ receptor agonist, in dog. SKF 81297, when gluten intravenously, produced diuretic action along with the increases of renal plasma flow (RPF), glomerular filtration rate (GFR), amounts of N $a^{+}$ and $K^{+}$ excreted into urine ( $E_{Na}$ , $E_{K}$) and osmolar clearance ( $C_{osm}$). It also decreased the reabsorption rates of N $a^{+}$ and $K^{+}$ in renal tubule ( $R_{Na}$ , $R_{K}$) and free water clearance ( $C_{H2O}$), whereas ratios of $K^{+}$ agonist N $a^{+}$ in urine and filtration fraction (FF) was not changed. SKF 81297, when administered into a renal artery, elicited diuresis both in experimental kidney given the SKF 81297 and control kidney not given, while the effect was more remarkable in experimental kidney than those exhibited in control kidney. SKF 81297 given into carotid artery also exhibited diuresis, the potency at this time, compared to those induced by intravenous SKF 81297, was magnusgreat. Above results suggest that SKF 81297 produces diuresis by both indirect action through changes of central function and direct action being induced in kidney. Central diuretic action is mediated by improvement of renal hemodynamics, but direct action by inhibition of electrolytes reabsorption in renal tubule.enal tubule. tubule.

  • A 5-year-old girl was admitted because of an acute onset of weakness in her extremities. She had experienced a similar episode before but had recovered spontaneously. She had previously been diagnosed with distal renal tubular acidosis(RTA) at the age of 2 months. During the period of acute paralysis, her serum potassium level was 1.8 mmol/L and the muscle enzymes were markedly raised suggesting massive rhabdomyolysis. Although hypokalemia is common in renal tubular acidosis, acute paralytic presentation is uncommon and is rarely described in children. We report a case of distal RTA complicated with hypokalemic paralysis with a brief review of related literatures.

An Experimental Study on the Effects of Hyperthermia and Irradiation on the Rat's Kidney (방사선조사와 온열요법이 백서신에 미치는 조직 변화에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Radiological and clinical evidences indicate that hyperthermia combined with irradiation produce a significant improvement in therapeutic effect of cancer The experiences obtained from 90 rats' kidney A single dose of irradiation ranged from 6Gy, 8Gy and 10Gy was delivered on the rat's kidney. The combined therapy group had the same irradiation after hyperthermia at $42\~44^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Microscopic examination and calculation of thermal enhancement ratio were carried out, and the results were as follows: 1. In the group of hyperthermia alone, there were moderate glomerular congestion and mild tubular degeneration on light microscopic examination. 2. In the group of irradiation alone, tubular degeneration was noted in 6Gy irradiation and its severity was increased along with radiation dose. 3. In the group of hyperthermia combined with irradiation, tubular degeneration and necrosis were appeared in 6Gy and 10Gy irradiation, respectively. 4. On electron microscopic examination, proximal convoluted tubular and glomerular changes in irradiation group were similar to that of combined with hyperthermia, and its severity was increased along with observation periods. 5. Thermal enhancement ratio (TER) was 1.0 after evaluation of histipathologic changes in rat's kidney, with combination therapy.

  • In this study, a physical evaluation of internal radiation exposure in children was conducted using nuclear medicine test(Renal DTPA Dynamic Study) to simulate the distribution and effects of the radiation throughout the tracer kinetics over time. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to determine the internal medical radiation exposure during the tests and to provide basic data for medical radiation exposure management. Specifically, dose variability based on changes in the tracer kinetic was simulated over time. The internal exposure to the target organ (kidney) and other surrounding organs was then quantitatively evaluated and presented. When kidney function was normal, the dose to the target organ(kidney) was approximately 0.433 mGy/mCi, and the dose to the surrounding organs was approximately 0.138-0.266 mGy/mCi. When kidney function was abnormal, the dose to the surrounding organs was 0.228-0.419 mGy/mCi. This study achieved detailed radiation dose measurements in highly sensitive pediatric patients and enabled the prediction of radiation doses according to kidney function values. The proposed method can provide useful insights for medical radiation exposure management, which is particularly important and necessary for pediatric patients.

Quality Properties of Takju(Rice Wine) Added with Kidney Bean (강낭콩을 첨가한 탁주의 품질 특성)

  • Kidney bean was used in the brewing of Takju. The Takju formed varied the percentage of kidney bean used; that is, 0%(only rice) in $T_{-1}$, 100%(only kidney bean) in $T_{-2}$, 90% in $T_{-3}$, 80% in $T_{-4}$, 70% in $T_{-5}$, 60% in $T_{-6}$, and 50% in $T_{-7}$. We determined the total sugar, pH, reducing sugar, alcohol production, acidity, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity of Takju. The acidic value of $T_{-1}$ was above that of $T_{-6}$, and the pH of $T_{-2}$ was above that of $T_{-1}$. Both satisfy the food code parameters (namely, below 0.5 in acidity, 3.8~4.7 in pH). The alcohol production of $T_{-1}$ was above that of $T_{-2}$. For 2 days of fermentation, the reducing sugar of $T_{-1}$ totaled 2, down from 4.96%. After fermentation, there was not much difference from 4 to 12 days. The antioxidative effect of $T_{-1}$ proved to be much better than those of the other. Thus, we can be seen that these results thus indicate that the role of kidney bean added to Takju show good antioxidative activity. From the result of sensory test, we also concluded that the taste of Takju kidney bean is very similar to that of Takju with rice.

Tissue Distribution of $SiO_2$ Nanoparticles in Mice after Oral Administration or Skin Treatment (마우스 경구 및 경피투여에 의한 $SiO_2$ 나노입자의 체내분포)

  • Tissue distribution of $SiO_2$ nanopaprticles was investigated in mice after oral administration or skin treatment. ICR Male mice were treated with $SiO_2$ nanoparticles 2.5 g/kg/day for five consecutive days and sacrificed at 24 hours after the last administration. As results, the orally administered $SiO_2$ nanoparticels were distributed in the testis and kidney but not in lung at 24 hours after the last treatment. In case of skin treatment, $SiO_2$ nanoparticles were distributed to lung as well as testis, brain, kidney and liver. The results suggested that $SiO_2$ nanoparticles (12 nm) are easily absorbed through entero-gastric system or skin.

Study on the Weight of Visceral Organs and Live Weight of Korean Native Cattle (한빈우(韓牝牛)의 생체중(生體重)과 장기중량(臟器重量)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to determine the interrelationship between the weight of various visceral organs and the live weight of Korean native cattle with particular regard to female ones. One hundred and eighty-five of 2 to 6 years and one hundred and fifty-six Korean native cow of over 7 years of age were examined at the Busan slaughter house during the lest quarter of 1979. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The average live weight of 72 years old cows examined was 297.09kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, heart, left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4301.09, 2165.22, 1355.43, 346.74, 350 and 991.30g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 49.0, 12.92 and 2.95cm, respectively. 2. The average live weight of 3 years old cows examined was 306.56kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, heart, left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4099.07, 2144.44, 1383.33, 326.85, 325.93 and 964.82g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 43.3, 12.37 and 2.80cm, respectively. 3. The average live weight of 4 years old cows examined was 314.67kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, heart, left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4186.67, 2292.50, 1392.50, 346.67, 343.33 and 932.50g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 47.01, 12.55 and 3.08cm, respectively. 4. The average live weight of 5 years old cows examined was 328.90kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, hearts left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4465.32, 2394.35, 1493.55, 370.16, 335.97 and 997.58g, respectively, The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 49.17, 12.76 and 3.16cm, respectively. 5. The average live weight of 6 years old cows examined was 334.97kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, heart, left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4585.29, 2552.79, 1555.89, 364.70, 373.24 and 985.29g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 48.27, 12.66 and 2.78cm, respectively. 6. The average live weight of 156 cows (over 7 years of age) examined was 344.91kg, while these weight of visceral organs such as liver, lung, heart, left kidney, right kidney and spleen being 4730.77, 2651.44, 1554.39, 407.37, 409.42 and 1101.06g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 51.04, 13.21 and 3.08cm, respectively. 7. Total average live weight of 341 cows (from 2 to 6 and over 7 years of age) examined was 332.44kg, while these weight of visceral organs being 4550.95, 2497.13, 1500.76, 380.18, 382.27 and 1047.98g, respectively. The length, width and thickness of the spleen were 52.01, 12.96 and 3.02cm, respectively. 8. The correlation coefficients between the live weight of 341 cows and their visceral organs were found to be highly significant (P<0.01), except fort for the length of spleen
