  • High speed engines with high power are increasingly on demands and almost engines employ crankshafts Such problems as bending and torsional vibrations become the point at issue in crankshaft analysis and design. In this study to overcome the diffiiculty with the large amount of computation in finite element vibration analysis of a crankshaft, a reduction method based on influence coefficient and lumped parameter is presented. which reduces the computation amount effectively and can be used in vibrational analysis and design of any types of crankshafts Crank journal and pinparts are meodelled as elements with 6degrees of freedom per node. Crank web part is modelled using equivalent mass and stiffness matices . based up on lumped parameter and influence coefficient respectively to reduce total degrees of freedom considerablely. To confirm the scheme of the study the results are compared with the known data and they are coincident. Also a simple crankshaft is designed and manufactured for experiments. The calculated results using reduction method and the experimental results agree well The scheme of this study can be utilized in evaluation results agree well. • Reduction schemes approximate the lower eigenvalues that represent the global behavior of the structures. But, they are not efficient to be applied to large-scaled problems because these schemes require considerable amount of computing time in constructing reduced one from the original large-scaled systems. In addition, the selection of the primary degrees of freedom might be localized to cause the excessive emphasis of the lower mode or lost of the important modes. In the present study, a new reduction method combined with the subdomain method is proposed. For the construction of the final reduced system the system of each domain subdivided into primary, slave and interface degrees of freedom. It is remarkably efficient and accurate comparable to full-scale system. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method saves computational cost effectively and provides a reduced system which predicts accurate eigen-pairs of global system.

  • A cantilevered piezoelectric energy harvester(PEH) and an auxiliary mass-spring unit can be integrated into a novel two-degrees-of-freedom PEH where its lowest eigenmode is not an in-phase modes but an out-of-phase mode. This typical behavior was shown to enhance output power considerably compared with its stand-alone counterpart. The objective of this study is to newly develop a continuum-based mathematical model suitable for efficient analysis of the mode-sequence reversed PEH. Once such a mathematical model is available, various physical behaviors can be analytically investigated for better designs. After a new mathematical model is developed, its validity is checked by using ANSYS results, in terms of resonant frequency, open-circuit voltage, and output power with a specified external resistance.

  • This paper is an extension of previous study[1] on a development of a divergence-free element method using a hermite interpolated stream function. Divergence-free velocity bases defined on rectangles derived herein produce pointwise divergence-free flow fields. Hence the explicit imposition of continuity constraint is not necessary and the Galerkin finite element formulation for velocities does not involve the pressure. The divergence-free element of the previous study employed hermite (serendipity) cubic for interpolation of stream function, and it has been noted a possible discontinuity in variables along element interfaces. This deficiency can be removed by use of a hermite bicubic interpolated stream function, which requires four degrees-of-freedom at each element corners. Those degrees-of-freedom are the unknown variable, its x- and y-derivatives and its cross derivative. Detailed derivations are presented for both solenoidal and irrotational basis functions from the hermite bicubic interpolated stream function. Numerical tests are performed on the lid-driven cavity flow, and results are compared with those from hermite serendipity cubics and a stabilized finite element method by Illinca et al[2].

  • The purpose of this study is to measure a perceived joint discomfort in the seated and standing position, and to provide ranking systems of perceived joint discomfort. Nineteen mole subjects with no history of musculo-skeletal disorders participated in the experiment. Their physical characteristics were: age $-25.4{\pm}2.7$years, stature $-171.9{\pm}6.0cm$, and body weight $-67.1{\pm}7.0kg$. The results showed that the perceived joint discomforts were different depending upon the joints involved in motion and their movement directions (degree of freedom of motions), which implied that the human body motions and their degrees of freedom should be classified into several distinct classes that need to be assigned different weights of postural stress. Therefore, three ranking systems based on the perceived joint discomforts were suggested, which were classified by the degree of freedom of motions and joints, by only degree of freedom motions, and by joints involved in motion, respectively. In the seated position, the hip movement was the most stressful, the bock was the second, and the shoulder was the third. Likewise, in the standing postures, the hip was the most, the bock was the second, and the ankle was the third. It was expected that these joint motion ranking systems could be used by practitioners of health and safety to improve the comfort of working postures in industry.

  • This study focuses on the limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) of cantilever swept-back wings containing a cubic nonlinearity in an incompressible flow. The governing aeroelastic equations of two degrees-of-freedom swept wings are derived through applying the strip theory and unsteady aerodynamics. In order to apply strip theory, mode shapes of the cantilever beam are used. The harmonic balance method is used to calculate the frequencies of LCOs. Linear flutter analysis is conducted for several values of sweep angles to obtain the flutter boundaries.

  • Let $F_1$ and $F_2$ be two F ratios with independent numerators and a common denominator. They are known to be positively dependent. The probabilities of simultaneous rejection and conditional rejection are numerically computed for both null and nonnull cases. The probabilities are presented in tables and graphics to show the influence of the seven parameters, the degrees of freedom of the numerators and the denominator, the non-centralities of the numerators, and the two levels of significance of the tests. The values of the correlation coefficient between $F_1$ and $F_2$ are also presented. Finally, a conjecture on the dependence order of the family of distributions of $(F_1, F_2)$ is given.

  • A 3-D.O.F. spherical PM motor has 3 degrees of freedom in its motion by tilting and rotating of a shaft, which can be applied in a range of fields. The back-EMF is proportional to the field flux and angular velocity. The back-EMF constant in conventional rotating machine has a uniform value. However, in a spherical PM motor, the back-EMF constant of the coils varies according to the tilting conditions regardless of whether the angular speed is constant. Consideration of the back-EMF constant is useful for designing 3-D.O.F. spherical PM motors. In this study, the back-EMF constant of the spherical PM motor was considered carefully.

  • In this paper, a new method is proposed for the five-degree-of-freedom precision alignment and stitching of three-dimensional surface-profile data sets. The control parameters for correcting thealignment error are calculated from the surface profile data for overlapped areas among the adjacent measuring areas by using the "least squares method" and "maximum lag position of cross correlation function." To ensure the alignment and stitching reliability, the relationships betweenthe alignment uncertainty, overlapped area, and signal-to-noise level of the measured profile data are investigated. Based on the results of this uncertainty analysis, an appropriate size is proposed for the overlapped area according to the specimen's surface texture and noise level.

  • In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.
