The parametric analysis of vertically braced steel pipe arch ribs was performed to evaluate their in-plane buckling strengths and ultimate load-carrying capacities. The elastic and plastic behavior of braced arch ribs, unlike those of the usual single arch ribs, are affected by such factors as the flexural rigidity of the brace member, brace and pipe ribs spacing, loading situation, and arch curvature. To analyze these effects, several parameters were included, such as the rise-to-span ratio, the second moment of the inertia ratio of the rib to the brace member, the space ratio of the brace, the space ratio of the upper and lower ribs, the initial crookedness, the slenderness ratios of the braced arch ribs, and the loading conditions were considered with live-load-to-dead-load ratios. Based on the results of the parametric analyses, a proper profile of the braced arch rib was proposed. A large-scale structural experiment was also performed to evaluate the ultimate strength of the braced arch rib. The test results were determined to reasonably coincide with the analytical ones.
The ship plating is generally subjected to. combined in-plane load and lateral pressure loads, In-plane loads include axial load and edge shear, which are mainly induced by overall hull girder bending and torsion of the vessel. Lateral pressure is due to. water pressure and cargo. These load components are nat always applied simultaneously, but mare than one can normally exist and interact. Hence, far mare rational and safe design of ship structures, it is af crucial importance to. better understand the interaction relationship af the buckling and ultimate strength far ship plating under combined loads. Actual ship plates are subjected to relatively small water pressure except far the impact load due to. slamming and panting etc. The present paper describes an accurate and fast procedure for analyzing the elastic-plastic large deflection behavior up to. the ultimate limit state of ship plates under combined loads. In this paper, the ultimate strength characteristics of plates under axial compressive loads and lateral pressure loads are investigated through ANSYS elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analysis with varying lateral pressure load level.
The advanced fiber-reinforced laminated composites are widely used in a variety of engineering applications such as aerospace, marine, mechanical and civil engineering for weight savings because of their high specific strength and stiffness. The material properties of ply is known to have larger variations than that of conventional materials and very sensitive to the loading direction. Therefore, it is important to consider the variations on designing the laminated composite. This paper demonstrates the importance of considering uncertainties through examining the effect of material properties variations on various design requirements such as tip deflection, natural frequency and buckling stress using COMSOL-MATLAB interface.
Developed in this study were Octagonal-hollow-section(OHS) struts, whose compressive strengths against flexural and local buckling is higher than H-shape or rectangular-hollow-section(RHS) struts with the same unit weight. OHS members are also advantageous in handling and storing compared to circular hollow sections(CHS). OHS members were fabricated from HR Plates by cold forming and fillet welding. 5 numbers of 20m long OHS struts were assembled, each of which consist of two 9.6m long OHS member and two end connection elements made of cast iron. The compressive strength of the OHS strut was evaluated by comparing the test results, design codes and FEM analysis each other. Test results show that all of the struts have almost same or larger compressive strength than Korean Road Bridge Design Code(KRBDC) (2012). The initial imperfections can be estimated by using measured strains and are turned out to be less than L/450 for all the struts tested. The results of FEM analysis show that the variation of initial imperfection has less effects on the compressive strength for struts with vertical surcharge than for those with self-weight only, while the strength decreases as the initial imperfection increases. As the result of this study, the allowable initial imperfection for 20m long OHS struts is recommended to be less than L/350 on job sites.

This study presents seismic responses of 5-story reinforced concrete structures retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces using a time-dependent element. The time-dependent element having birth and death times can freely be activated within the user defined time intervals during the time history analysis. The buckling-restrained brace that showed the largest energy dissipation capacity among the test specimens in previous research was used for retrofitting the RC buildings in this study. It was assumed that the first story of the damaged building under the first earthquake was retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces considered as the time-dependent element before the second of the successive earthquakes occurs. Under this assumption, this paper compares seismic responses of the RC structures with the time-dependent element subjected to the successive earthquake. Subjected to the second earthquake, it was observed that activation of the BRB systems largely decreases deformation of the moment frame where the damage was concentrated under the first earthquake. However, damages to the shear wall systems were increased after activation of the BRB systems. Since the cumulative damages of the shear wall systems were infinitesimal compared with the retrofit effect of the moment frame, the BRB system was effective under the successive earthquake.

This study examined the structural stability of nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic nano plates on elastic foundations using first-order shear deformation theory. Navier's method has been used to solve the buckling loads for all edges simply supported boundary conditions. On the other hand, biaxial buckling analysis of nano-plates has beenrarely studied. According to the Maxwell equation and the magneto-electro boundary condition, the change inthe magnetic and electric potential along the thickness direction of the magneto-electro-elastic nano plate wasdetermined. To reformulate the elasticity theory of the magneto- electro-elastic nano plate, the differential constitutive equation of Eringen was used and the governing equation of the nonlocal elasticity theory was studied using variational theory. The effects of the elastic foundation arebased on Pasternak's assumption. The relationship between nonlocal theory and local theory was analyzed through calculation results. In addition, structural stability problems were investigated according to the electric and magnetic potentials, nonlocal parameters, elastic foundation parameters, and side-to-thickness ratio. The results of the analysis revealedthe effects of the magnetic and electric potential. These calculations can be used to compare future research on new material structures made of magneto-electro-elastic materials.

Ship are a box-shaped structure. It is used often fore and aft parts, bilge strake, deck with camber of ship structures. When this structure is compared with flat plate structure, it different to behaviour. Generally, if it subjected to axial compressive load, ultimate strength depend on the change of curvature. Also, In this paper, stiffened curved plate with 1/2+1+1/2 bay model subjected to compressive load carried out the elasto-plastic large deflection series analysis. and parameter effect considered slender ratio, web height/thickness as well as change of curvature and investigated collapse mode for analysis model.
Structural design of most nonprismatic Pre-Engineered Building Systems (PEBS) is performed using optimizing software developed in foreign countries. In this study, a structural optimizing software for the design of 3-D structures of nonprismatic PEBS is developed according to the allowable stress design method of AISC2005 and KBC. Optimizing structural design with nonprismatic members is carried out by repeating the process of structural analysis and member design to minimize the weight of a structure. According to the optimizing design results of 2-D and 3-D structures with nonprismatic members, there are considerable steel savings in designing structures with nonprismatic H-shaped built-up sections rather than with H-shaped rolled sections. When H-shaped built-up sections were used, the weight of the structural steel was reduced when AISC2005 specification rather than AISC1898 was used in the design. It is therefore concluded that utilizing the new AISC2005 specification is safer in preventingweb buckling because the height of a member is designed to be small despite some differences depending on the structural type.
Substituting composite structures for conventional metallic structures has many advantages because of higher specific stiffness and specific strength of composite materials. In this work, one-piece driveshafts composed of carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites were designed and manufactured for a rear wheel drive automobile satisfying three design specifications, such as static torque transmission capability, torsional buckling and the fundamental natural bending frequency. Single lap adhesive joint was used to join the composite shaft and the aluminum yoke. The torque transmission capability of the adhesively bonded composite shaft was calculated with respect to bonding length and yoke thickness by finite element analysis and compared with the experimental result. Torque transmission capability was based on the Tsai-Wu failure index fur composite shaft and the failure model which incorporated the nonlinear mechanical behavior of aluminum yoke and epoxy adhesive. From the experiments and the finite element analyses, it was found that the static torque transmission capability of the composite driveshaft was highest at the critical yoke thickness, and saturated beyond the critical length. Also, it was found that the one-piece composite driveshaft had 40% weight saving effect compared with a conventional two-piece steel driveshaft.
In this study, the effects of cross beams on the lateral distribution of live loads in composite rolled H-beam girder bridges, were investigated through three-dimensional finite element analysis. The parameters considered in this study were the inertial moment ratio between the main girder and the cross beam, the presence of the cross beam, and the number of cross beams. The live load lateral distribution factors were investigated through finite element analysis and the customary grid method. The results show that there was no difference between the bridge models with and without a cross beam. The cross beam of the beam and frame types also showed almost the same live load lateral distribution factors. However, the finite element analysis showed that the concrete slab deck plays a major role in the lateral distribution of a live load, and consequently, the effect of the cross beam is not so insignificant that it can be neglected.
