  • This study was implemented to clarify the effect of a supplementary pole on the increment of safety snow-depth for the single-span plastic greenhouses which had been run as standardized facilities for 10 to 15 years till April, 2007. In the previous work, some of the basic ideas of the use of a temporary pole were discussed, but application was restricted to both 2-D and the cases which took rafter's specifications into no consideration, and there was also much less experimental information available. So, by modeling the house as the 3-D frame structure, the present study attempted to provide a comprehensive review of the pole's effect through structural analyses as well as measurements. Structural analyses abnormally revealed that the pole regardless of its interval had a negative effect on the structural stability. The results was certainly inconsistent with practical experience and hence implied a necessity of reinforcing the roof purlin. Accordingly, with the purlin being sufficiently reinforced, the plastic greenhouse with the pole's interval of 3~4 m had two times safety snow-depth more than that of the plastic greenhouse without the pole. And the safety snow-depth of five types of the single-span plastic greenhouses according to the pole's intervals was presented.

  • The country has built and is operating IT-based integrated management system for efficient management of national highway tunnels used publicly these days. Since this system doesn't include the management function on earthquakes, it is impossible to promptly respond to earthquakes and to select the sections requiring seismic reinforcement. Tunnels designed and constructed after 1999 have been subjected to seismic design for an earthquake with a return period 1000 years. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the stability of structures in case of earthquakes more than this. Since it takes a lot of time to perform the stability evaluation on various earthquake magnitudes, a method that can easily evaluate earthquakes is needed. In this paper, the empirical simplification method that can easily evaluate the earthquake was proposed. For this, the study calculated ground displacement by conducting one-dimensional ground response analysis, and examined the safety of tunnels in the event of occurrence of an earthquake using two means of response displacement method (analytics and numerical analysis).

  • In order to estimate the tide and flow properties around the archipelago, around Dolsan, Choyak, Geogeom and Jindo which located in the southwestern waters of the south sea of Korea, tidal currents, residual flows and tidal energy dissipation were investigated by using 2-dimensional numerical model. The maximum speeds of tidal currents are small around Dolsando(31.92 cm/s) and large around Jindo(87.55 cm/s). The residual flow is fastest around Choyakdo where many channels and islands as compared with other study areas. The area around Jindo has the highest currents speed, but shows the flat movements. The margins between the maximum and the minimum dispersion rates of tidal energy in the areas are estimated and designate the order of values around Dolsando($392.6{\times}10^7$ erg/s), Geogeumdo($125.7{\times}10^7$ erg/s) and Jindo($23.1{\times}10^7$ erg/s) sequently. These circumstances are same as in the amplitude of M2 constituent. This means that rapid depth changes and narrow channels play an important role in tide and tidal currents energy in archipelago.

  • In this paper, an automatic mobile robot system for a intelligent path planning using the detection scheme of the spatial coordinates based on stereo camera is proposed. In the proposed system, face area of a moving person is detected from a left image among the stereo image pairs by using the YCbCr color model and its center coordinates are computed by using the centroid method and then using these data, the stereo camera embedded on the mobile robot can be controlled for tracking the moving target in real-time. Moreover, using the disparity map obtained from the left and right images captured by the tracking-controlled stereo camera system and the perspective transformation between a 3-D scene and an image plane, depth information can be detected. Finally, based-on the analysis of these calculated coordinates, a mobile robot system is derived as a intelligent path planning and a estimation. From some experiments on robot driving with 240 frames of the stereo images, it is analyzed that error ratio between the calculated and measured values of the distance between the mobile robot and the objects, and relative distance between the other objects is found to be very low value of $2.19\%$ and $1.52\%$ on average, respectably.

  • This study proposes a theoretical methodology for deriving a rainfall intensity-duration- frequency (I-D-F) curve using a simple rectangular pulses Poisson process model. As the I-D-F curve derived by considering the model structure is dependent on the rainfall model parameters estimated using the observed first and second order statistics, it becomes less sensitive to the unusual rainfall events than that derided using the annual maxima rainfall series. This study has been applied to the rainfall data at Seoul and Inchon stations to check its applicability by comparing the two I-D-F carves from the model and the data. The results obtained are as followed. (1) As the duration becomes longer, the overlap probability increases significantly. However, its contribution to the rainfall intensity decreases a little. (2) When considering the overlap of each rainfall event, especially for large duration and return period, we could see obvious increases of rainfall intensity. This result is normal as the rainfall intensity is calculated by considering both the overlap probability and return period. Also, the overlap effect for Seoul station is fecund much higher than that for Inchon station, which is mainly due to the different overlap probabilities calculated using different rainfall model parameter sets. (3) As the rectangular pulses Poisson processes model used in this study cannot consider the clustering characteristics of rainfall, the derived I-D-F curves show less rainfall intensities than those from the annual maxima series. However, overall pattern of both I-D-F curves are found very similar, and the difference is believed to be overcome by use of a rainfall model with the clustering consideration.

  • In the passive emitter localization using instantaneous TDOA (time difference of arrival) and FDOA (frequency difference of arrival) measurements, the estimation accuracy can be improved by collecting additional measurements. To achieve this goal, it is required to increase the number of the sensors. However, in electronic warfare environment, a large number of sensors cause the loss of military strength due to high probability of intercept. Also, the additional processes should be considered such as the data link and the clock synchronization between the sensors. Hence, in this paper, the passive localization of a stationary emitter is presented by using the successive TDOA and FDOA measurements from two moving sensors. In this case, since an independent pair of sensors is added in the data set at every instant of measurement, each pair of sensors does not share the common reference sensor. Therefore, the QCLS (quadratic correction least squares) methods cannot be applied, in which all pairs of sensor should include the common reference sensor. For this reason, a Gauss-Newton algorithm is adopted to solve the non-linear least square problem. In addition, to show the performance of the proposed method, we compare the RMSE (root mean square error) of the estimates with CRLB (Cramer-Rao lower bound) and derived the CEP (circular error probable) planes to analyze the expected estimation performance on the 2-dimensional space.

  • A numerical method for a 2-D oil boom model considering the flexibility of skirt has been developed The neater is assumed rigid and the skirt is tensioned membrane having a point mass at its end The fluid motion is potential. The kinematic condition which demands the continuity of the displacement is imposed at the joint between the floater and the skirt. The dynamic condition for the point mass is imposed at the bottom end of the skirt. The numerical method is based on the Green's function method in the frame of linear potential theory. It finds it's solution simultaneously from the total system of three equations, integral equation, the equation of motion of the floater and the equilibrium equation of the deformation of the skirt. Integral equation is derived by applying the Green's theorem to radiation potential and Green's function. Proper descretization of those three equations leads to the system of a linear algebraic equation. Due to the flexibility of skirt the motion of floater can be diminished in some range of wave frequency and furthermore the mechanism of resonance of the oil boom can be changed. The motion responses of various oil booms have been compared varying the length of the skirt and the point mass. The numerical method has been validated indirectly from the good correspondence between the motion responses of the flexible skirt model and the rigid skirt model in low frequency limit.

  • The waveform inversion for isotropic media has ever been studied since the 1980s, but there has been few studies for anisotropic media. We present a seismic waveform inversion algorithm for 2-D heterogeneous transversely isotropic structures. A cell-based finite difference algorithm for anisotropic media in time domain is adopted. The steepest descent during the non-linear iterative inversion approach is obtained by backpropagating residual errors using a reverse time migration technique. For scaling the gradient of a misfit function, we use the pseudo Hessian matrix which is assumed to neglect the zero-lag auto-correlation terms of impulse responses in the approximate Hessian matrix of the Gauss-Newton method. We demonstrate the use of these waveform inversion algorithm by applying them to a two layer model and the anisotropic Marmousi model data. With numerical examples, we show that it's difficult to converge to the true model when we assumed that anisotropic media are isotropic. Therefore, it is expected that our waveform inversion algorithm for anisotropic media is adequate to interpret real seismic exploration data.

  • An approximation of speed of sound in the measurement plane is essential for the inverse estimation of temperature. To this end, an inverse problem relating the measured retarded time data in between set of sensors and actuators array located on the wall is formulated. The involved transfer matrix and its coefficient vectors approximate speed of sound of the measurement plane by using the radial basis function with finite number of interpolation points deployed inside the target field. Then, the temperature field can be reconstructed by using spatial interpolation technique, which can achieve high spatial resolution with proper number of interpolation points. A large number of retarded time data of acoustic paths in between sensors and arrays are needed to obtain accurate reconstruction result. However, the shortage of interpolation points due to practical limitations can cause the decrease of spatial resolution and deterioration of the reconstruction result. In this works, a regeneration for obtaining the additional retarded time data for an arbitrary acoustic path is suggested to overcome the shortage of interpolation points. By applying the regeneration technique, many interpolation points can be deployed inside the field by increasing the number of retarded time data. As a simulation example, two rectangular duct sections having arbitrary temperature distribution are reconstructed by two different data set: measured data only, combination of measured and regenerated data. The result shows a decrease in reconstruction error by 15 % by combining the original and regenerated retarded time data.

  • Analytic solutions for the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity driven by the wind stress in the one-dimensional rectangular basin were obtained under the assumption of steady-state. The approach treats the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$ as known and includes vertically varying eddy viscosity $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, which is constant, linear and quadratic of water depth. When the $\tau$$_{b}$ is param-terized with surface stress, depth averaged velocity and bottom velocity, the result shows the relation of the no-slip bottom velocity condition and the bottom frictional stress $\tau$$_{b}$. The results of a mode splitted, (x-$\sigma$) coordinate, numerical model were compared with the derived analytic solutions. The comparison was made for the case such that $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is the constant, linear and quadratic function of water depth. In the case of constant $textsc{k}$$_{M}$, the gradient of surface elevation and vertical profiles of velocity are discussed for a uniform depth, a mild slope and a relatively steep slope. When $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ is a linear and quadratic function of water depth, the vertical structures of velocities are discussed for various $\tau$$_{b}$. The result of the comparison shows that the vertical structure of velocities depends not only on the value of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ but also on the profile of $textsc{k}$$_{M}$ and bottom stress $\tau$$_{b}$. Model results were in a good agreement with the analytic solutions considered in this study.his study.y.his study.
