Two historical cases of audience's boycott movement in the early 1920s were analyzed in this study. The first boycott was resolved by the counterforce to the public funeral of Yunsik Kim in February of 1922. This case can be estimated as the historical origin of audience's boycott movement in the Korean media history. The second case was carried out by the National Convention of the Youth Parties in March of 1923. The target of these two cases were The Dong-A Ilbo. And these boycott movement were caused by the conflict and competition between nationalists and socialists in the national independence movement. These two parties were incompatible in the ideology and method of national independence struggle. In the course of their conflict and competition for the initiative socialist party resolved and carried out the boycott movement to The Dong-A Ilbo, because it was regarded as the advocate of the nationalist party.

But, at early America, it is very difficult that role of design settle down and progress than these days. It is not to he easy newly born in industrial design because of rapidly changing the America situation with multi settlers, the Depression and world wars. There was various design change in short period. So we called the step modern 1920 and the streamlined 1930. The study is background of American design by variety cultures & creatures from 1920s to 1930s. Some of Korea design has affected of America cultures at duration of 6.25 war and now. This study has included early culture & industrial life, designer activity, and at the part of rear new invention, industrial design relate to architect, four leading designers Walter Dorwin league, Norman Bel Geddes, Henry Dreyfuss, Raymond Loewy. In present world situation, It is important in all aspect to understand that early process at America industrial design. Early American culture is constructed from the building block of the puritan ethic and is sheathed by liberal mercantilism, today is became one stir it into the common molting pot.

  • Russian anarchist thinker P. A. Kropotkin had a significant impact on the school of thought, the literary field and the anarchist movement in East Asia in the early 20th century. This paper examines the history of the translation of Kropotkin in terms of the routes and paths of translation in colonial Korea in comparison with those in Japan and China. It is a known fact that the acceptance of Kropotkin in colonial Korea is owed to pioneering translation works in Japan, but it appears that there have been various transformations and magnetizations in the process of translating the texts into the Korean language. Despite a disturbing censorship, the works of Kropotkin, such as "I appeal to the youth ("Aux Jeunes Gens" in French)", were imported, translated and distributed by various routes throughout the 1920s and there were various versions of translated Korean texts. At this point, it is noteworthy that there are works which were translated from Chinese texts about Kropotkin, such as the works of Yu Seo (柳絮), and it can be said that there is a relationship between Korean translations and Chinese original texts. Since the 1930s, the phenomenon of the appropriation of Kropotkin as a litterateur and critic rather than an anarchist thinker is particularly apparent, and this allows us to understand that Kropotkin became a major pathway to interpret Russian literature in East Asia. In colonial Korea, translations of Kropotkin were generally via Japan and China, but the process of translation also showed the struggle to accept and adapt 'the foreign text' into the Korean language.

  • This research is a comparative analysis of article titles in the beginning period of Korean newspapers. The Independent, The Korea Daily News and The Dong-A Ilbo were chosen for this research because each was the representative newspaper of 1890s, 1900s and $1920s{\sim}1930s$ respectively. In result, The Independent's article titles had been appeared on nearly 2 years after its first issue. Before the appearance of titles, The Independent had divided articles only with section names. In 1900s, The Korean Daily News's article titles was longer than those of The independent. And in 1910, the titles of The Korean Daily News had been placed on separated line to divide articles clearly. But during these period, typographical development of titles was not shown and the width of title was remained in one column. This means, the function of title in these periods was not to represent the value of article but only to divide the articles. In 1920s, The Dong-A Ilbo had used big size types and multi-column edit and those changes enabled newspaper to introduce the concept of layout. During the decade of 1930s, The Dong-A Ilbo's titles had occupied more space on newspaper than earlier period. This could be explained from the perspective of sensationalism of commercial newspaper and a tendency of putting more weight on titles. On the dimension of expression, proportions of subjective titles in The Independent, The Korea Daily News were 44.4% and 28.3% each, but the subjective titles of The Dong-A Ilbo in 1920's were only 4.2%. This decrease can be explained by the settlement of objective journalism in Korean newspapers during $1920s{\sim}1930s$.

  • In the early 1920s Japan, a new concept of architecture emerged abruptly. Comprised of six new college graduates, Japanese Secessionist Architects, so called Bunriha Kenchikukai, proclaimed that they reject any historical baggage that Japan had so far inherited, and decided to build a brand new way for modern Japanese architecture. Their modernism differed from eclectic measurement done by earlier generations. For them, contemporary modern Japanese architecture was only copious to historic monuments of Western civilization. Bunriha architects' statement not only advocates an escape from nationalist historicism and Westernization, but also intends to resolve the dilemma in that it substitutes a technical syncretism inherent in all avant-garde movements. This paper intends to elucidate that Japanese Secessionist architecture is greatly indebted to German Expressionist architecture in terms of its formal language and avant-garde utopian idealism.

  • The study examines the significance and limits of modern park planning by analyzing major planning documents of Gyeongseong in the Japanese colonial era. Among seven selected documents from 1925 to 1940, which show the contents related with park planning, documents of 1930 and 1940 presented the official park plan of Gyeongseong. By the 1920s, the park plan was not a major concern in urban planning of Gyeongseong; however, as the planning law as enacted in 1934, the park plan legally became a part of the official master planning process in the 1930s. In 1940, the most comprehensive park plan for Gyeongseong was published. In the beginning of modern urban planning, a park was mainly perceived as a sanitation utility. From the 1920s to the 1930s, the park planning system was significantly improved including systemic classification of parks, guideline development considering spatial planning, and introduction of a concept of infra-structural green space. Despite of the improvement in the park planning, the actual quantity of the overall green spaces barely changed and there was a huge discrepancy between the planning ideal and the reality. The Gyeongseong stadium was the only facility newly built in the 1920s, and only two parks were constructed in the 1930s. The plan to build 38 new parks in the 1930, and 140 in the 1940 was barely realized. However, there were efforts to improve parks and green spaces of Gyeongseong: Such as appropriating natural forest as parks, designating royal palaces as parks, and focusing on constructing smaller scale children's parks. Even though the ideal plan could not be fully implemented due to the war time situation and tight budget, the park system of Gyeongseong provided the framework of park planning of Seoul after the independence.

  • Music was made popular through the modern mass media. Nonetheless, if a period of high standard performances and appreciation by a minority of culture connoisseurs can be qualified with the expression "gentrification of culture", then a period when anyone can access culture through the mass media can be qualified with the terms "popularization of culture" and in this period the reorganization of performance culture can only be driven by the public. In fact, the Jabga, which is a type of traditional song that received strong public adhesion by means of phonograph records and radio broadcasts at the time, stands as a typical example to it. Gagok and Sijo up until the 1920s and even the 1930s are believed to engage actively in the changing media environment and the new modes of music enjoyment and transmission. The Album recording of faster rhythm music and the inclusion of the Sijo, Jabga, and folk songs in one broadcast programme can be seen as reflecting such an effort. However, it can only be hard for the Sijo and Gagok to challenge the predominance of the Jabga which made its lyrics more popular and the new songs written in accordance with the new media environment. Until the 1930s in this changing environment of music enjoyment, Gagok and Sijo performers rather sought to distinguish themselves from the existing popular song style by reproducing traditional forms. The album recording and broadcasting of Lee Wangjik Aakbu, the beginnings of local singers, the participation of male performers not only contributed to the diversification the enjoyment culture of songs and sijo, but also made the 'difference in standard' with the popular songs even more salient.

  • Steel-Concrete composite girders have been used since early in the 1920's due to their advantages, which are lower weight, increasement of stiffness, slenderness, long span. However, in designing short to continuous composite bridges, negative moment occurs in mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore, partially composite bridges are considered. In this time, slab-anchor is used in these. If the stiffness of shear connectors is insufficient, slip would happen at the contact surface. Partial interaction is the case that takes account of slips. In this paper, the evaluation of initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor in composite bridges is obtained from Push-Out specimen. Also, finite element analyses which uses the initial shear stiffness of slab-anchor got the experiment are carried out on simple composite girder and continuous composite girder. Futhermore, the ratio of composite according to various shear stiffness are investigated and the classification according to the ratio of composite is proposed.

  • This article explores Changgyeongwon's spatial and cultural characteristics that were created there as the first modern urban park in Kyeongseong in the Japanese colonial era. First, in point of comparison regarding a colonial historical view, the study tried to understand the background of Changgyeongwon's establishment as well as three aspects of Changgyeongwon's characteristics as a modern urban park. The study found that; First, foreign envoys and high ranking members had visited Changgeongwon in the early opening period. This shows that this site was a park for foreign propaganda and modern display. Second, Changgyeongwon was altered as a place of enlightenment in the 1920s. This is related to the tendency of Changgyeongwon's increasing popularity around this period. More facilities and events particularly for women and children were offered at that time. Third, investigating the historical records, Changgyeongwon's cultural characters as a park are discussed. Changgyeongwon was an important place creating a modern park culture in Kyeongseong in the colonial era.
