  • Ginseng is an important medicinal plant cultivated in East Asia for thousands of years. It is typically cultivated in the same field for 4 to 6 years and is exposed to a variety of pathogens. Among them, ginseng root rot is the main reason that leads to the most severe losses. In this study, endophytic bacteria were isolated from healthy ginseng, and endophytes with antagonistic effect against ginseng root rot pathogens were screened out. Among the 17 strains, three carried antagonistic effect, and were resistant to radicicol that is a mycotoxin produced by ginseng root rot pathogens. Finally, Bacillus velezensis CH-15 was selected due to excellent antagonistic effect and radicicol resistance. When CH-15 was inoculated on ginseng root, it not only inhibited the mycelial growth of the pathogen, but also inhibited the progression of disease. CH-15 also carried biosynthetic genes for bacillomycin D, iturin A, bacilysin, and surfactin. In addition, CH-15 culture filtrate significantly inhibited the growth and conidial germination of pathogens. This study shows that endophytic bacterium CH-15 had antagonistic effect on ginseng root rot pathogens and inhibited the progression of ginseng root rot. We expected that this strain can be a microbial agent to suppress ginseng root rot.

  • In this paper, we are performance analysis of IEEE 802.15.4b LR-WAPN(Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network; Zigbee) system noncoherent receivers at 915MHz under Jamming. IEEE 802.15.4b concerns itself with devices at 915MHz, which employ a higher data rate of up to 250 kbps, and which use O-QPSK(Offset Quradrature Phase Shift Keying modulation with DSSS(Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum). Communication between devices can still be hampered by the presence of interferers outside the network, whether the interference be intentional or not. Hence the receivers can not have stable receiving condition due to worse BER. To solve this problem, we present a mere stabilized receiver system of using noncoherent detection. In this paper, we look instead at the effect of jamming, i.e. intentional interference, on the BER performance of IEEE 802.15.4 devices.

  • 15-Hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE), as a mammalian biologically active metabolite, has anticarcinogenic effect. The conditions of producing 15-HETE from arachidonic acid by using soybean lipoxygenase were optimal at pH 8.5 and $20^{\circ}C$ with 9 g/l arachidonic acid, 54.4 U/ml soybean lipoxygenase, and 4% methanol. Under these optimized conditions, the enzyme produced 9.5 g/l 15-HETE after 25 min, with a molar conversion yield of 99% and a productivity of $22.8gl^{-1}h^{-1}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first biotechnological production of 15-HETE.

  • Background: The basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSK). BCC might develop because of the faulty cell cycle arrest. $p15^{INK4b}$ is a tumor suppressor gene, involved in cell cycle arrest and inactivated in most human cancers. The role of $p15^{INK4b}$ protein expression in the genesis of BCC is as yet unknown. In a previous study we showed the absence of $p15^{INK4b}$ expression in the majority of tissue microarray cores of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs), another type of non-melanoma skin cancer, indicating that $p15^{INK4b}$ could possibly be involved in the pathogenesis of cutaneous SCC. The aim of this study was to investigate $p15^{INK4b}$ protein expression in BCCs. Materials and Method: Protein expression of $p15^{INK4b}$ in 35 cases of BCC tissue arrays and 19 cases of normal human skin tissue was studied using an immunohistochemical approach. Results: The expression of $p15^{INK4b}$ was not significantly different in the BCC cases as compared with normal human skin (p=0.356; p>0.05). In addition, there were no significant relationship between clinicopathologic variables of patients (age and sex) and $p15^{INK4b}$ protein expression. Conclusions: Our finding may indicate that $p15^{INK4b}$ protein expression does not play a role in the genesis of BCC.

  • A 15-Lead ECG has been developed to diagnose posterior wall diseases of the heart that a 12-Lead ECG cannot diagnose. However, 15-Lead ECG data for developing heart-diseases-detecting algorithm are limited, and previous ECG simulators cannot predict the ECG waveform according to the changes in electrode. To solve these problems, the lumped parameter model (LPM), which divides the heart into 15 sections with varying electrical capacitance and electrical resistance. To imitate the electrical conduction in the heart, each node was connected to a current source and delivered the specific current considering the positions and time delay. The purpose of this study is to acquire the waveform that can be used in an ECG by delivering the specific current to LPM.

  • Daily energy expenditures (DEE) of 82 co-eds in a University were estimated simultaneously by use of calorie counter and 15-min check list diary for 3 days, including a weekend day. The results are summarized as follows. The mean values of DEE from 15-min check list diary and calorie counter were 1967kcal and 1649kcal, respectively. DEE obtained with 15-min check list diary seems to be consistent with the results made by others concerning DEE of college female in Korea, but DEE by calorie counter was lower than that. However, DEE by calorie counter show high correlations with anthropometric indices of subjects and DEE by 15-min check list diary. Therefore, DEE by 15-min check list diary was taken as standard and regression equation for predicting DEE of subjects were developed: DEE by 15-min check list diary =3.31186 + 1.18837 $\times$ DEE by calorie counter. This technique for measuring DEE permits us to have more accurate estimate of DEE and acceptable to the subjects. When the subjects classified as underweight, normal, overweight according to relative body weight(RBW), DEE and DEE per kg of body weight were significantly different from each other between three groups based on RBW. The frequency of 15-minute periods with a categorical value of 1 was significantly higher in overweight than underweight and normal groups and the frequency of a categorical value 3 was significantly lower in overweight than underweight group. From the results shown above, physical activity level of overweight group was lower than that of normal and underweight groups.

  • This study were performed to investigate the effect of Bisphenol A(BPA) administration on semen characteristic and body or organ weight in mice. In BPA administration for 15 days or 30 days, sperm concentration and viability were lower in group treated with BPA than in control group. The proportion of sperm abnormality were significantly(P<0.05) increased in groups administrated with BPA for 15 or 30 days than in control group. The administration of BPA in mice didn't affect the body and reproductive organ weight such as testis, epididymis, vasicular gland and coagulatin gland. The spleen weight were significantly affect, but liver and kidney weight were not affect in BPA administration groups for 15 days or 30 days This studies indicate that the short or long term BPA administration in mice were noxious effects on the semen characteristics and organ weight, but didn't affect body weight and reproductive organs.

  • The hepatitis A virus (HAV) induces severe acute liver injury and is adapted to human and monkey cell lines but not other cells. In this study, the HAV was inoculated into porcine kidney (PK-15) cells to determine its infectivity in porcine cells. The growth pattern of the HAV in PK-15 cells was compared with its growth pattern in fetal rhesus kidney (FRhK-4) cells. The growth of HAV was less efficient in PK-15 cells. In conclusion, HAV replication was verified in PK-15 cells for the first time. Further investigations will be needed to identify the HAV-restrictive mechanisms in PK-15 cells.

  • A high-temperature superconducting(HTS) generators have been actively studied because of its advantages of weight, size, and efficiency. A large-scale superconducting wind power generator becomes a very low-speed high-torque rotating machine. In these machines, high electromagnetic force and torque are important issued. Two generators connected in series on one shaft design are one of the solution to overcome the high torque problem. In this paper, the authors design and analyze a 15 MW class HTS generator. The 15 MW HTS generator is confirmed in terms of magnetic field distribution and torque performance using a 3D finite element method. As a result, the designed generators generates less torque than a conventional generator. The designed 15 MW superconducting generator will be effectively utilized in the construction of the large-scale wind power generation system.

  • Objectives : To study the apoptosis effects of fermented Undaria pinnatifida extracts(FUP) against HCT-15 colon cancer cells. Method : By measuring cell proliferation, DNA fragmentation, cell cycle, morphology, and western blot from FUP, the study investigated the effects of the extractions had upon the HCT-15 colon cancer cells, and concluded that the inhibiting effects upon cells were induced by apoptosis. Result : FUP effectively inhibited the growth of HCT-15 colon cancer cells. After analyzing the DNA fragmentation, the study observed a DNA ladder, while examining the cells, and found an increase of sub-G1 hypodiploid cells. On the changes regarding the nucleus of the cells, a condensation of cells and chromatin, as well as an apoptotic body was clearly observed. By observing through western blot from FUP, the study found a decreased level of Bcl-2 from HCT-15 colon cancer cells, but the increased level of Bax and cleaved caspase-3, which as a result induced apoptosis, inhibiting the growth of HCT-15 colon cancer cells. FUP increased the natural death of HCT-15 colon cancer cells by the induction of apoptosis. FUP seemed to have no suppressing effect upon HL-60/MX2 cells. However, compared to the fucoidan, the study was able to clearly observe morphological changes of HCT-15 cells apoptosis, in a 1/2 concentration. Conclusion : FUP had antiproliferative effects on different kinds of cancer cells, while proving especially efficacious against colon cancer cells.
