New record of three oxytrichid ciliates (Ciliophora: Oxytrichidae) from South Korea

  • Three oxytrichid ciliates, Oxytricha lithofera Foissner, 2016, Pleurotricha curdsi (Shi et al., 2002) Gupta et al., 2003 and Sterkiella tetracirrata Kumar et al., 2015, were isolated from soils and confirmed as new to South Korea. Oxytricha lithofera was identified based on lithosomes, cortical granules, 21-33 adoral zone membranelles, one left (14-21 cirri) and one right (15-18) marginal rows and 5 transverse cirri. Pleurotricha curdsi was identified based on the possession of 2 macronuclear nodules, 2-3 micronuclei, 46-53 adoral zone membranelles, 3 frontal cirri, 5 frontoventral cirri, 5-7 postoral ventral cirri, 2-3 right marginal rows and 5 transverse cirri. Sterkiella tetracirrata was identified with respect 4 macronuclear nodules, 3-6 micronuclei, 25-40 adoral zone membranelles, 3 frontal cirri, 3 postoral ventral cirri, 2 pretransverse cirri, one left (21-30 cirri) and one right (24-30) marginal row and 4 transverse cirri. On the basis of 18S rDNA sequence analyses, we describe the phylogenetic positions of the three species.

New record of three hypotrich soil ciliates(Ciliophora: Hypotricha) from South Korea: Oxytricha multilineata, Mixophrya pantanalensis pantanalensis and Caudiurostyla sinensis

  • Oxytricha multilineata, Mixophrya pantanalensis pantanalensis, and Caudiurostyla sinensis were isolated from soil samples collected from Cheongju-si and Yeoju-si, confirmed as new to South Korea. Oxytricha multilineata was distinguished from other congeners by seven dorsal kineties and dorsal bristles about 15 ㎛ long. Mixophrya pantanalensis pantanalensis was characterized by five to seven lithosomes and six dorsal kineties. Caudiurostyla sinensis was characterized by colorless cortical granules present, 10-14 midventral pairs, 7-9 left and 6-9 right marginal rows and four or five dorsal kineties. We determined the ribosomal DNA sequences (including 18S rDNA, ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, ITS2, and partial 28S rDNA) from above three species. And the genetic distances were compared with their congeners.

  • 지금까지 한국산 다듬이벌레는 3개 아목(Trogiomorpha, Troctomorpha, Psocomorpha)의 7개 과에서 14종이 알려져 있다. 채집된 재료를 바탕으로 동정을 실시한 결과, 2개 아목에 속하는 다음과 같은 10종을 추가한다: [Troctomorpha] Amphientomidae: Ancylentomus macrourus (Li, 1997); [Psocomorpha] Amphipsocidae: Amphipsocus japonicus (Enderlein, 1906), Caeciliusidae: Valenzuela oyamai (Enderlein, 1906), Paracaecilius japonicus (Enderlein, 1906), Stenopsocidae: Cubipilis aphidiformis (Enderlein, 1906), Stenopsocus immaculatus (Stephens, 1836), Peripsocidae: Peripsocus didymus Roesler, 1939, Psocidae: Amphigerontia anchorae Li, 2002, Psococerastis tokyoensis (Enderlein, 1906), Trichadenopsocus alternatus Li, 2002. 이 미기록종들에 대한 성충 및 진단형질의 사진을 제공하였다.

  • 전라북도 남원시 식정동에서 채집한 한국 고유종인 섬진자가사리를 암, 수 각각 9마리와 8마리의 핵형 분석을 실시하였다. 섬진자가사리의 염색체 수는 2n=42로 조사되었고, 핵형은 28 metacentric과 14 submetacentric으로 이루어져 있었으며 FN은 80이었다. 이번 결과에서 배수체와 암수 간의 성적이형은 발견되지 않았다. 섬진자가사리는 근연종들과 염색체 수는 같았으나, 핵형에서는 차이를 보였다.

  • 해양 식물플랑크톤은 해양생태계에서 가장 중요한 생산자로서 해양생물 및 해양환경에 지극히 큰 영향을 미친다. 따라서 식물 플랑크톤은 해양의 생태를 연구함에 있어 중요하고도 우선되는 연구 대상이다. 한국에서는 Skvortzow(1931) 및 산전(1933)가 처음으로 해양 식물플랑크톤을 연구한 이래, 상천(1934), 소구보(1938), 창무(1943, 1944), 박(1956a,b), 최(1966, 1967, 1969, 1972), 엄 유(1967), 이 심 김 (1967), 박 김(1967), 방(1967), 최(1969, 1970), 정 심 이(1970, 1971), 정(1969), 유외(1975), 유 이(1976), 유(1977), 정 이(1977) 등으로 연구가 계속되어 오고 있다.

한국 제주도에서 채집된 전갱이과(Carangidae) 어류 1미기록종, Pseudocaranx dentex (New Record of the White Trevally, Pseudocaranx dentex (Carangidae, Perciformes) from Korea)

  • 농어목 전갱이과에 속하는 Pseudocaranx dentex 1개체가 2014년 7월 14일 제주도 성산해역의 정치망에서 채집되었다. 이 종은 체측에 1개의 노랑줄무늬가 있는 점, 양턱에는 송곳니가 일렬로 줄지어 있는 점, 주새개골 위부분에는 1개의 선명한 검은색 반점을 가지는 점 그리고 주둥이는 눈지름보다 길게 돌출되는 점이 특징이다. 이 미기록종의 속명과 종명은 각각 "흑점줄전갱이속"과 "흑점줄전갱이"로 제안한다.

  • Insect fauna in adjacent areas of Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea was surveyed seasonally in $2001{\sim}2003$. The survey area was divided into 3 regions (eastern mountain, middle inland, and western coastal regions) in accordance with administrative districts and topography. Sampling methods such as sweeping, sieving, beating, brushing and suction were used depending on the environmental and military conditions. Total 361 genera and 437 species of 116 families belonging to 14 orders were identified. Among these, 46 species were new to insect fauna of DMZ areas. Species richness was the highest in the eastern mountain region. Numbers of habitat-common and -specific species were 96 (22%) and 195 (47.2%), respectively. The insect species community similarity was highest (0.64) between eastern mountain region and western coastal region. Insect orders showing high species richness were Coleoptera (38.9%), Lepidoptera (19.2%), Orthoptera (9.4%), and Hemiptera (9.2%). These results will be useful information for study of history on the change of insect fauna and future conservation in DMZ areas.

Diversity, Phylogeny, and Host-Specialization of Hyaloperonospora Species in Korea

  • The genus Hyaloperonospora (Peronosporaceae; Oomycota) is an obligate biotrophic group that causes downy mildew disease on the Brassicaceae and allied families of Brassicales, including many economically relevant crops, such as broccoli, cabbage, radish, rape, and wasabi. To investigate the diversity of Hyaloperonospora species in northeast Asia, we performed a morphological analysis for the dried herbarium specimens collected in Korea, along with molecular phylogenetic inferences based on internal transcribed spacer rDNA and cox2 mtDNA sequences. It was confirmed that 14 species of Hyaloperonospora exist in Korea. Of these, three species, previously classified under the genus Peronospora, were combined to Hyaloperonospora: H. arabidis-glabrae comb. nov. (ex Arabis glabra), H. nasturtii-montani comb. nov. (ex Rorippa indica), and H. nasturtii-palustris comb. nov. (ex Rorippa palustris). In addition, finding two potentially new species specific to northeast Asian plants is noteworthy in support of the view that the species abundance of Hyaloperonospora has been underestimated hitherto.

  • 1. Mt. Soyo is situated in the central part of Korea, approximately 37$^{\circ}$56'W. Latitude, 127$^{\circ}$4'N. Longitude. This mountain is about 530 meters above sea level, and consists mainly of granites. Above 200 meters the area is covered with oak trees (Quercus mongolica, Q. aliena) with a kind of Rhododendron (Rhododendron mucronulatum, R. schlippenbachii) as undergrowth. About 500 packets of bryophytes were collected by the writer in 1959. 2. The mosses collected in this region were of 68 species belonging to 51 genera. Those species may roughly be divided, as follows; 1) 15 species (22.1%) are distributed also in Europe and North America (Holarctic element). 2) 2 species (2.9%) occur also in Kamchatka and the Aleutians (North Pacific element). 3) 14 species (20.6%) are widely distributed every where (Cosmopolitan element). 4) 19 species (27.9%) occur also in the temperature region of the Far East (East Asiatic element). 5) 3 species (4.4%) occur also in Indomalaya and India (Tropical element). 6) 15 species (22.1%) are endemic to Japan and Korea. 3. The Hepaticae collected in this region are of 11 species belonging to 7 genera. Those may roughly be divided, as follows; 1) 4 species (36.4%) are distributed also in Europe and North America (Holarctc element). 2) 5 species (45.5%) occur also in the temperature region of the Far East (Asiatic element). 3) 1 species (9.1%) occur also in Indomlaya. 4) 1 species (9.1%) are endemic in Japan and Korea. 4. The species which are new to the flora of Korea are as follows; 1) Leucobryum glaucum (L.) Schimp. 2) Psedoleskeopsis dicurvata (Mitt.) Broth. 3) Thuidium delicatulum (Hedw.) Mitt. 4) Dolichotheca perrobustum (Broth.) Broth. 5) Brachiolejeunia sandvicensis (Gott). Evans. 6) Porella vernicosa Lindb. ssp. gracillina (Mitt.) Ando.

Bibliographic checklist of Korean spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) ver. 2015

  • The 2015 version of the bibliographic checklist of Korean spiders from the first checklist by Paik and Kim (1956) is presented, together with a complete bibliography of relevant Korean araneological literature. A total of 620 publications during 1907-2015 including original description on the Korean spiders and records of taxonomic description were critically reviewed. Records only from locations within the present borders of South Korea are listed. A total of 748 spider species of 271 genera belonging to 46 families are confirmed to exist in Korea. Twenty one species, whose distribution or existence within the Korean border are uncertain and lacked valid records, are excluded from the present list pending critical validation. Four spider species endemic to North Korean are listed separately from the present list. One genus, Joopilia Chae and Sohn, 2013 and 2 species, Joopilia jooplis Chae and Sohn, 2013 and Dolomedes jirisanensis Kim and Chae, 2012, which had no designated type species and no diagnosis, are cited as nomina nuda. New synonyms of 15 previously described spider species are proposed. Based on their zoogeographical distribution, the Korean spider fauna was found to be influenced by the northern species, including 36 Holarctic and 72 Palearctic species (14.5% of the total species). Korean endemic species include 160 species (21.5% of the total species). Korean indigenous spiders are also distributed in neighboring countries: 318 species in Russia (42.7%), 460 in China (61.7%), and 488 in Japan (65.5%).
