  • A series of mono- and 1,1'-bis(heteroaryl)-substituted ferrocenes were prepared by employing Frielander reaction of acetyl- and 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with a series of o-aminoaldehydes. Reactions of 1,1'-diacetylferrocene with two equivalents of 1-aminonaphthalene-2-carbaldehyde and 8-aminoquinoline-7-carbaldehyde afforded a mixture of mono- and 1,1'-bis(heteroaryl)-substituted ferrocenes in a ratio of 1 : 3.1 - 3.8, while the reaction with 4-aminoacridine-3-carbaldehyde did not provide any characterizable product presumably due to the redox instability of the product induced by low reduction potential of benzo[b]-1,10-phenanthroline. Structural and optical properties of the compounds prepared were described.

  • A new analytical luminescence method for the $Dy^{3+}$ ion was studied using the luminescence enhancement by the treatment of the o-phenanthroline on the TLC plate. Compared to the specific emission intensities of the ion in water solution, if the ion solution is spotted on the TLC plate, the luminescence intensities were extremely enhanced. There was additional enhancement effect of the luminescence intensities of the ions on the TLC plate, if the ion on the TLC plate is treated with o-phenanthroline. Based on the luminescence enhancement, the detection limit was improved by more than 4 order of magnitude compared to that of solution sample. The dynamic ranges and correlation coefficients of the calibration curves near the detection limit were 102 order and ~0.99, respectively. The energy-transfer mechanism was explained for the theoretical back ground of the luminescence enhancement.

  • A new spectrophotometric method was established for the determination of undecylenic acid. The method is based on the solvent extraction into nitrobenzene of the ion pair formed between tris(1,10-phenanthroline)Fe(II) chelate and the anion of undecylenic acid. The maximum absorbance of the extract in the organic phase was at 518nm. A maximum extraction was obtained at pH 9-11, when excess of at least 50-fold(molar) of the phenanthroline-Fe(II) chelate to undecylenic acid was present. The color intensity of the extracted species remained constant at room temperature for the several hours after separation of the organic layer. A linear relationship was obtained over the tested range of 5-20${\gamma}$/ml of undecylenic acid. The effect of several other fungicids on this method was investigated. The method was applied to the determination of undecylenic acid in preparations and the results were in good agreement with those added amounts.

  • A continuous flow system has been developed to determine trace Cu(II), Mn(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in a large volume of water samples by a solvent sublation technique. The mixed solution of 1,10-phenanthroline(phen) and thiocyanate ion was used as ligands for the formation of their ternary complexes. The continuous system was constructed in this laboratory with a peristaltic pump, a mini shaker, three mixing bottles and a flotation cell by connecting each part with a polyethylene tube. The flotation conditions such as the flow rate of sample solution and the injection rates of ligand, buffer and surfactant solutions have been investigated to obtain the best sublation efficiencies. Each solution flowed into the flotation cell through each polyethylene tube by the peristaltic pumps. The ternary complexes were floated and extracted into MIBK in a flotation cell of 2 L by bubbling a nitrogen gas. The absorbances of extracted analytes in MIBK were directly measured by graphite furnace-AAS. The concentrations of 1,10-phenanthroline and thiocyanate ion were $2.6\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ M and $2.3\;{\times}\;10^{-2}$ M in the mixed solution, respectively. The pH of sample solution was adjusted to 5.0 with a buffer solution and 1%(m/v) sodium lauryl sulphate solution was added as a surfactant to support the effective flotation of the complexes. The $N_2$ gas was bubbled at 30 mL/min for 90 minutes for 20 L of sample. Reproducible results of less than 10% RSD and recoveries of 80-120% could be obtained in real samples.

  • A simple and general method that selectively introduces metal binding sites into a protein can greatly increase the ability to design and biosynthesize artificial metalloproteins. Here, we report the incorporation of a phenanthroline-containing amino acid (Phen-Ala) into proteins in Escherichia coli by using the $tRNA{^{Tyr}}_{CUA}$ and tyrosyl aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase pair (BpyRS) from Methanococcus jannaschii, which was originally developed for a bipyridine-containing amino acid (Bpy-Ala). The incorporation efficiency of BpyRS for Phen-Ala was comparable to that for Bpy-Ala. Because of its high metal-binding ability and characteristic spectral properties, Phen-Ala can be a useful alternative to the existing metal-chelating amino acids for the design and synthesis of artificial metalloproteins.

In order to determine chemical structure of Synthesized platinum complexes, $^1H(^{13}C)$-NMR, UV-vis and FT-IR were used and optical physics and chemical properties were measured PL. In the case of platinum complexes, wavelength has been identified 356~421 nm. Quantum efficiency in DMSO solution was appeared 0.05~0.46.

  • Emission quenching of photoexcited tris(${\alpha},{\alpha} '$-diimine)-ruthenium(II) complex cations, $RuL_3^{2+}$ (L: 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine; 4,4'-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine; 1,10-phenanthroline; 5-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline; 5,6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline) by $Cu^{2+}$, dimethylviologen $(MV^{2+})$, nitrobenzene (NB), and oxygen was studied in aqueous homogeneous and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micellar solutions. The apparent bimolecular quenching rate constants $k_q$ were determined from the quenching data and life-times of $^{\ast}RuL_3^{2+}$. In homogeneous media, the quenching rate was considerably slower than that for the diffusion-controlled reaction. The decreasing order of quenching activity of quenchers was $NB>O_2>MV^{2+}>Cu^{2+}$. The rate with $Cu^{2+}$ was faster as the reducing power of $^{\ast}RuL_3^{2+}$ is greater. On the other hand, the rates with NB and $O_2$ were faster as the ligand is more hydrophobic. This was attributed to the stabilization of encounter pair by van der Waals force. The presence of SDS enhanced the rate of quenching reactions with $Cu^{2+}$ and $MV^{2+}$, whereas it attenuated the quenching activity of NB and $O_2$ toward $RuL_3^{2+}$. The binding affinity of quenchers to SDS micelle and binding sites of the quenchers and $RuL_3^{2+}$ in micelle appear to be important factors controlling the micellar effect on the quenching reactions.
